Help please... possible CCT problem
Yet again something has come up that is going to stop me from buying new gear :( Today, on my way back from Hein Gericke, I started to hear a sort of slapping/loose chain noise coming from the front cyclinder somewhere. I also have a very slight rattling noise coming from the Clutch, it disappears when the clutch lever is held in but can be quite hard to hear over the top of the other noise. Now before I go buying new CCTs is there anyone around the Killingworth area that could check it out who has either had this probalem before or knows what it sounds like. I will try to get a video up tomorrow to see if you can hear it. I would prefer to do the work myself so that I get to know the bike better rather than get a garage to do it but dont know what to do.
I would really appreciate any help with this and im sure i can find some extra beer money for whoever helps me out here. Thanks. Reece Edit: Might aswell post this here instead making a new thread, I would have changed the title if i could. Anyway, the day before I had new bearings and sprocket fitted I adjusted my chain to what I thought was beteween 20 - 30mm, but at the garage the mechanic siaid is was way too slack, so now its adjusted to how he says it should be, but I swear the gear changes were alot smoother when it was the way I had it before he adjusted it. Im just a little confused over this so I would like to get a second opinion on my chain slack, I think its too tight at the moment. Sorry about piggybacking this question in this thread but I couldnt change the title and didnt want to make a new one just to ask if someone could double check my chain slack. Thanks again. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Are you round tomorrow night or earlyish Friday morning as I'm 20 mins away.
the chain should be between 20 and 30mm. any tighter and it has the potential to stretch and upset the gearbox |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
I'm around all day tomorrow but I'm busy all day Friday. I have noticed that the gear changes are more clunky but adjusting the chain is an easy job once I know the slack, just confused over how everyone else said its too slack when I thought it was fine, it made the gear changes alot smoother anyway.
Its the CCTs im quite worried about, dont have a clue how to check them or change them and dont trust myself to be honest, not when ive never done it before anyway. I always heard a ticking sound but this is louder so got me worried, and its not the same sound either. Just my luck eh, looking forward to getting new gear and now this. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Chain slack is a bit of preference and bike set-up tbh.
Mine runs 25 to 35-40 slack as the shocks different and 1mm longer. Has the bike had a good length run in the last 4-8 weeks? As its potentially the oil needs to be heat cycled. Also when was it last serviced? Also to be noted (as a good few mechanics have said to me) the fromt CCT isn't constantly (or rarely) in a bath of oil, whereas the rear one is |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
If i'm measuring it correctly I think my chain slack is about 15mm.
Not sure what you mean by "good length run in it" If you mean disrtance ridden then about 1500 miles if that. Changed the OIl and Filter about 2000 miles ago. Going by the service manual, the last service was done at 14500 miles in 2006! Only just noticed when that was done. Its now on 24200 miles and has never missed a beat. Had a faulty R/R which has been fixed and could do with a Carb synch but other than that it been good. Ive been doing bits and pieces as ive gone and was planning on getting it properly serviced beginning of next year along with getting it de-restricted. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
What I meant is, have all the journeys been 5 or 6 miles or are they 50 and 60 mile runs?
|
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Most have been like 10 - 20 mile runs lately. Im on a limited annual mileage with my insurnace, which is due end of month, and only have 190 miles until I go over the limit so ive kept my riding down to a minimum.

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
fair enuf.
Sounds like the oil needs to be heat cycled. If your still concerned PM me your mobile in the morning and I'll give it a listen |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Cheers mate. If it still makes the noise tomorrow I'll PM you my number, although I could do with someone checking my chain slack. Don't worry about my mileage, I only done 200 last month and that was with a couple of quick rideouts.
Oh, I'm ECH0. Made a new account as I couldn't stand the name ECH0, but it's still me, and I just found out how big a mistake I made. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Just to confirm that that is my new account, however I now wish I chose a different name. :(
|
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
No probs mate.
Just give me a PM it'll be sometime in the evening before I can get across. Also ask for one of the account to be deactivated as the Mods and Admin may block one or both the accounts |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Just like to say thankyou to the kind Mod/Admin who sorted out my account.
Sorry didn't get round to doing anything with the bike today. I am heading down to Silverlink tomorrow so I'll get a quick video or something of it idling and post it up here, that way you can listen to it as many times as you want. If it does turn out to be a dodgey CCT how easy are they to replace? |

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
From the sounds of it, replacing the CCTs shouldn't be too hard a job. That's if they need replacing. Found some manual CCTs on eBay for what seems like a good price. Would you recommend manaul CCTs over the automatics?
Link - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-sv6...item19c7b607f6 Just in case you want to have a look. While searching the net for info on CCTs I came across someone saying that pushing the bike backwards, whilst in gear, can sometimes fix the problem. However the fix may not last long. It could start rattling again within days. I'm going to read through my Haynes manual tomorrow but would grately appreciate it if someone wouldn't mind helping me out if they do need replacing. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Replacing CCT isn't a very difficult job a time served Suzi mechanic told me how to check it in 30 secs. Knowledge is needed to do it,
The Auto verus manual debate has been had soo many times. Automatic removes another inspection process from the maintenance. CCT's are good for 50k and a lot further. If it is was the pre SV design it would be a replacement (VX800's are very poor). Sid Squid has motor running as out of factory with 106k on it. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Ah right. So basically I need to check my CCT. That's where I'm lost, I could try to follow a manual, but having never done it before I wouldn't really know what to look for.
I think I will just slacken my chain a little as the gear changes are really clunky now, whereas they were pretty smooth when I had it apparently "way too loose". Also need to replace my Sprocket carrier bearing as it is on its way out. Just when I wanted some new gear, I've had to spend my money on other bits and pieces. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
If you inform your insurer that you may breach your mileage allowance, most are ok about going a couple of hundred miles over.
Like I said give the bike a run to heat the oil up and it should quieten down. this should help you http://www.sv650.org/camten/cam%20ch...tenstioner.htm |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Right I have some videos on my phone now. One where the bike was cold, been sitting in garage a few days, the second is after a 30 minute ride so pretty warmed up. I used to get a faint(ish) rattle sort of like a babies toy rattle but this noise is a pretty loud distinct tapping. So at the very least I want to take the CCTs out, check them over and give them a clean.
As for my insurance, I already raised my annual mileage from 3000 to 6000 which cost £70. I told them about possibly going over 6000 a while back and they said it would increase my premium. So basically, I won't be going back with them again. I'll have to go get some long Allen keys with the ball end and the special Suzuki tool if I'm to attempt removing my CCTs. Even with a guide I still don't feel confident as last time I did something that wasn't your general maintenance I nearlly messed up which would have cost me few quid. If I mess up these CCTs it will cost a bit more than a few quid. I will get the videos up in a bit, hopefully the sound comes through as it was recorded on my phone. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Does that sound like a CCT problem?

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Hard to tell from the vids but does sound like the CC problem on the K5 I had. FWIW, I put a new CCT on, only to have to renew the CC itself. Not a majorly difficult job, although does require dropping of the coolant, oil, new gasket seals, something to remove the stator etc. It's more of a time consuming job than rocket science and I did have the mechanical know how of YC to guide me.
I'm not familiar with the curvy/manual CCT's, however have a spare pointy/automatic CCT if you're interested. EDIT: It costs around £150 from memory to renew the cam chain and all the gaskets (pointy). |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Cheers. I will try and get a second opinion first before I do anything as the video isn't the best quality. Hopefully it's not in need of a new CC, can't afford that right now. Its actually louder in the video than it is in person, but its definately a new, louder noise than normal. What condition is the spare CCT you have? Is it a direct fit on to the Curvy?
|
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Don't know about the direct fit, I 'think' it is, but there's lots of info on here if you search.
It's a front CCT and as far as I know, it's in good condition. As I said, I replaced it with a new one on the K5, however I still had the rattle. I replaced the cam chain itself and the rattle went, therefore the cam chain must have been fubard. You're welcome to try it on a sale or return basis if you want, at least it might rule out the CCT one way or the other. |

He says the standard ones are fine. It might be that the rachet mechanism is stuck from what I remember being posted before. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Here you go.
Zadar has never seen one fail in 11years, its possibly just a plate in the CCT rattling, according to Zadar's knowledge http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=162623 |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
I quickly decided against buying a manual CCT but thanks for the heads up anyway. I'm going to take the CCT out and clean it up once I have the tools as like I said earlier, the rattle/tapping noise isn't as loud in person as it is in the video. The 2nd video (Warm) is more like what it sounds in person.

Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
It's been a while since I posted anything else about this noise. I took my bike down to my local family run garage the other week and when I arrived the noise had completely gone. It's come back again but not as loud and I can definitely say that it's coming front he rear cylinder area as the noise is loudest when you put your head near the rear wheel/shock area.
The noise keeps coming and going, and because the mechanic I trust is away on holiday I have no way of getting a 2nd opinion from someone who isn't just going to say anything to get money from me. If it is a sticking tensioner could someone show me how to check this if they have any spare time. I have read through my Haynes Manual but dont fully understand it, plus not being very mechanically compotent probably has something to do with it aswell. I want to be able to work on my own bike and not just have a garage to do all the work but I don't want to dive into something if I'm not 100% sure no matter how simple it may seem. Like I said the noise comes and goes and isn't overly loud but sometimes it can be heard over the engine when doing less than 40mph at roughly 4000RPM, but I would have thought it would get louder the higher the engine revs. When I do hear the tapping noise at roughly 4000RPM just by going up to 4500RPM seems to stop the noise. And yes I have checked stuff for lose screws which may cause the rattling but haven't seen anything. Although I did find a nice big screw in my rear tyre the other day, I wasn't very happy. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
Just a very quick question before I go ahead and sort out my CCT tomorrow. Can I retract the tensioners push rod thing without taking it off the bike? That's if I can get a screw driver in there, to hopefully unstick it.
Thanks in advance, and you won't be hearing from me again about this, unless something doesn't go to plan. |
Re: Help please... possible CCT problem
It's hard to diagnose a noise from a video, sorry.
If it is a bit of a rattle that's coming and going it's probably the guide piece in the tensioner rattling, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Resetting the tensioner does not fix this. |
