Average Speed Cameras

Having completed a search and found nothing...

Has anyone here had or know anyone who has been issued a ticket from an average speed camera? Everyone knows somebody who has been 'done' by a fixed or mobile camera.

I do a lot of motorway driving and these type of cameras seem to be everywhere where there are major roadworks.

Whilst I agree with the speed limits in these certain areas and do usually stick to the speed limits, I have been through whole sections of them at perhaps more than 10mph of the set limit (usually 50mph in the South and 40mph in Scotland it seems).

It is funny to see the stupid people that slow down for each camera and then back on the juice until the next big yellow stick... Perhaps they dont know the correct meaning of averages.

Its also very common that you see people powering through them at speeds of around 90mph!

Do they know something I don't?!

Never been done, don't know anyone who has been done, don't always stick to the limit either always push it a bit, I'm curious too. Fact or fiction?

Oh they definitely work, we get tickets through regularly.

+1 We have them on a section of dual carrigeway nearby, 10mph over the limit doesn't seem to get you a ticket. The police still put temporary hidden cameras on this section of road:confused:

Re: Average Speed Cameras

Speedo error & the limit the cameras are set at usually mean you could cruise at 60mph in a 50... But the cameras & limit are there to protect the workforce.

Still, very convenient when there's a doylem in a merc sat in lane 3, cruise control at 49mph with no traffic in the 2 inside lanes.. Just slip past him and enjoy 100's of yards of braking distance without Mr. Merc hogging the road to himself while he's tinkering with his blackberry..

Some do have either rear facing cameras or additional cameras I believe

Daughter -in-law got one on the A12 Roadworks and got a nice picture of her driving her Merc, speed from the camera, average speed, date and time all displayed.48mph in a 40mph limit-------result SP60 Points and fine,so I know the ones round here work.
As for motorbikes and rear facing cameras I don't know but in reality is it worth taking the chance for the little extra time it takes to slow down.

Re: Average Speed Cameras

One of the main advantages of the average camera system is that it does slow the majority of traffic down for an extended distance, as opposed to single point cameras where everybody brakes, and then speeds up again. Unless it's particularly quiet this makes it harder for a single vehicle to speed because, put quite frankly, everybody else gets in the way. This makes the average systems more effective, and safer.
Motorbikes of course don't have the same problem with the traffic, or with detection, so it's down to the rider and everybody knows that motorcyclists are far more responsible than car drivers....

Re: Average Speed Cameras

The more temporary set up's don't have rear facing Cameras. I'm personally unaware of any motorcyclists getting caught with front facing Ave speed Cams. I believe they are called Truvelo cams and were designed to take pictures of the drive and number plate.

There also something about this on Visordown.

Our local force puts well hidden mobile units on it's average speed camera section to catch bikers, presumably because bikers tend to be more aware they feel the need to hide the camera.

The stretch your looking at also runs the plain bikes and cars.
There is a nice alternate route for when its dry.

Yeah, got done a few years ago unfortunately. Average 57 in a 50 whilst driving through Thelwall Viaduct roadworks on the M6. Gutted, was about midnight and the road was dead (and no workforce!) but no excuses :(

Dipper 17-03-12 09:22 PM

Seems that the ones at roadworks seem to work, anyone been caught by the permanent ones?

I might slow down in the average speed camera areas from now on...

My sisters husband was telling family that if you change lanes they dont get you... Shame he got a speeding ticket from them a week later haha

Re: Average Speed Cameras

Cat & Fiddle has these set up.

50mph which is ok, theres a slip road which if your having fun & feel the need to just skip the camera you can peel off & rejoin about 2-300m down the road. They have placed it in a rather daft place TBH.

You couldnt hit the average speed between the cameras if you tried.

appollo1 18-03-12 03:19 AM

I am still waiting to see if I get any notification through for the average speed cameras that are on the M90 approaching the forth road bridge. 40mph limit and I was going through a lot quicker than that!

50% of speed limit allowed but I may have been over that as I was on the way to an emergency at the time.

See now I think you had a perfectly good reason for "speeding" there. The Average speed cameras are there to "protect the workforce". if the "Workforce are not there then the cameras should be switched off. if a single lane road in the UK has a speed limit of 60 then a well lit, deserted, motorway lane in the middle of the night should not be policed with the cameras.

But hell, that would be too much like common sense and how the hell do you make money out of common sense?

Actually I know someone who does this regular, he's not been caught yet.

Some of the limits are not very consistent, some are 40 or 50.

Bloody annoying.

Changing lanes used to work on earlier versions of the software, but most installations have been updated now.

Rear facing average speed cameras are easy to spot, funnily enough, they are exactly the same but turned round the other way to face backwards!

I've always wondered this.

I admittedly do push my luck at times and so far I've not been caught - maybe the ones round me are not turned on, or I've just got very lucky.
