Now I have this a lot with Mr LPH where he claims to have lost an item of clothing and 'has looked everywhere for it'. When I ask 'Have you checked in the wardrobe?' he gets a puzzled look on his face and says 'No, why on earth would it be in there when I left it in the usual place?' (the floor)

Lo and behold, when he checks the wardrobe, as if by magic the lost item is there, on a hanger! The laundry fairy must have hidden it there.

That's the problem though isn't it? He put it on the floor for a reason, i.e. so he'd remember where he left it. Then 'someone' thought they'd tidy up/hide it.
