Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
So, The Pirate Bay has now been blocked by most UK ISPs.
Its nice to see the Government/Judges are working to protect us from ourselves. Its not like its a bad thing, after all its just those people illegally downloading films, music and porn, right? What if I put it this way, paraphrasing a German Pastor from the 1940's http://www.chaoscrypt.com/pics/Pirate.jpg So which websites will it be next? |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
yeah, tricky one this.

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
I dislike the blocking of pirate bay BUT if the police closed down a shop in your town that was selling heroin would you complain?
We either believe in the law or morality, morality is dependent on the individual, the law on the group. |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
Oh no!! they've closed the Heroine shop!! :(

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
SK, I don't quite understand how it works - if pirate bay has been blocked could they not give themselves a new domain name or something?

Its more like a directory telling you where you could get the heroin. And its not like downloading kills anyone, although the loss of sales probably means that bands/actors have less money to buy heroin with. Its not illegal to download, its the uploading part that is illegal. Let the Copyright Mafia get their acts in gear, get a new business model that works and move on. |

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
Strange thing is I work in a secondary school as a computer technician and I was reading up that Virgin and Sky have blocked Pirate Bay so I was curious and tried to get on Pirate Bay on our Admin Server..
I got right in. God knows what the students have been downloading with torrents without us knowing for all these years. Oops! |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
Maybe the activists can help find a solution that prevents people copying and distributing content illegally. I dont agree with general censorship, but then I dont agree with facilitating illegal file sharing either.

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
This is a common topic in our office and I'm firmly in the "so how does the effect me?" camp
To me the pirates, hackers and illegal downloaders are all they've ever been after. From carboot VHS pirates, then to Napster and now the pirate bays etc its always been about taking down the people who are taking something they dont have the right to sell and selling it on. I honestly don't think these itunes, netflix type places are a bad deal. I certainly used to use Gozilla and Limewire practically 24/7 getting all sorts of media I never even used. This was when people used to complain films and music were too expensive, well its now half the price it all used to be but people still want to get it for less which I suppose is a natural desire but at some point you've got to see that a song for under a quid inst actually too bad, a movie in your living room for less than its costs at the cinema is a bargain. NB: I know nothing of the software side so fill your boots with complaining about opensource etc but P2P music and video I'm in agreement that if we want the industry to survive we've got to buy its produce not source it for free. |

At the end of the day think of the Billions of people who use the internet every minute of the day.
There's always going to be an alternative if something gets shuts down - ALWAYS. |

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
The one problem is do have with the illegal downloading is it seems to hide from the record companies the real reason their profits are falling... They keep churning out junk that only teenieboppers like.

If you want a.. just say.... Album? Then your first instinct is to go online rather than getting on your bike/car/bus whatever into town and buying the album. Even if downloaded LEGALLY of for example Itunes, it's there and ready to put on your devices like your phone and Ipod. A very interesting thing as well which I don't quite get is ripping the album onto your computer or laptop is also illegal because it's making a copy of it and your also not allowed to LEND anybody these albums. So we go for the internet. IMO I think torrenting is the best way. |

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
But the. Who really wants an album?
Even if you do take yourself off to town you have to pay a tenner or more for one or two good songs and a lot of filler. If I want music from a new band I'll always pay for it (or just listen on the radio, I usually get bored before it drops off th playlists), if I want an old band I'll either torrent it (if they're all dead) or buy it for about £1 on eBay. |

Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
Depends on the music, I don't like the quality of YouTube, too low for a decent stereo system. One of these days I'll actually buy a decent stereo and if I don't plan ahead I'll regret it.
But then nothing sounds quite as good as vinyl anyway. |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
what's wrong with simply paying for the content that you want?

But who's likely to get caught? A 13 year old boy downloading a torrent like rest of the thousand people online or a 13 year old boy wearing a hoodie in ASDA nicking a Justin Bieber album? Hm.. |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
I either:
pick up my phone, go to itunes, hit the search button, type the artist, find the album, hit download or Turn on my tv, hit the top left button then the red button then the blue button and search, hit select, then wait until it says available and watch it. I honestly dont see the point in doing it the "dodgy" way, but then again the volume at which I do it may be a factor, ie I dont do it much at all if I were still getting an album a week then yeah I'd still be into torrent/p2p etc but it just doenst make sense to me anymore. |

Lets try another, how about you pop into the nearest garden center and just take a few cuttings. Leave the original plant there obviously, just take what you want. Or nip into your nearest cinema with a video camera. You have a choice not to buy it, taking it without paying is theft. Would you expect to be able to photocopy a book in Waterstones? No, you browse, then either buy a book or put it back. |

This is not really a thread about the rights and wrongs of downloading music. Its about the Censorship that has now been placed over those of us that use an ISP that is obeying a court order which has the purpose of enforcing thought-crime by making it impossible for you to do something that is deemed by a Judge to be "wrong". |

Justin Bieber not selling albums or somebody getting murdered? |
Re: Going down with the ship... (Censorship in the UK)
And people are'nt taking it, they must have dropped it and it's lying on the floor, finders keepers.
