an SV rideout.... 29/07/12

in nature if not exclusive in bike make.

By which I mean anyone welcome, normal rules, not hectic pace, junctions marked, no one gets lost.

As it's Olympic time and the zig zag is closed for the bike racing and surrounding area (boxhill) I would suggest a meet at Newlands corner, a 130 mile(ish) loop down to Worthing and back (not set in stone yet), or of course you could leave once down there, anyway I'll work out the details later this week and edit this post.

Location of start point: about 5 miles away from boxhill towards Guildford on the A25, or for satnav

EDIT:-
A couple more thoughts on this whilst I have a minute, probably include the dunsfold rd (for those who don't know, voted 8th best bike riding road in the country at one point/ passes the "topgear" track), and a stop at the Bury hill tea hut on the way as we'll be near there, lunch at the seaside, maybe a return up through Ashdown forest or something like that (I'll actually plan a route (and bring maps for those wanting them) at some point).

11am leaving Newlands with a brimmed tank
stick you name down if interested of if you'd like to meet up along the way and I'll work out timings.

Cheers Mark

cut and paste below when adding name

Newlands Corner for 11am kick off
1. Rictus.

Update

owing to the cycle racing Newlands will be a pain to get to (if at all), so now the start will be about 5 miles away at the Junction of the A281 Horsham rd and the B2130, there is a layby just south of the junction with a tea van (see pic), accordingly and extra 15 minutes will be afforded, so start time will be 11.15 with a full tank, petrol is available in Cranleigh.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net...38492444_n.jpg,

the nearest postcode is GU6 8JX , which puts you on Elmbridge rd, turn right at the trafficlights (going west) and the the tea van is 100yds on the left.

Second Edit

Right well it'll be the dunsfold rd,going down to Petworth, A 272 across to Midhurst, onto Compton and then back to Goring -by-sea,that's about an 80 mile leg, lunch at Sea lane cafe, couple of options for a route back, depending on how everyone is fairing, but for simplicity A27/A26/A22 and up through ashdown forest (about 55 miles) ending at Jct 6 M25 Godstone green so everyone can get away easier.

Cheers Mark

Anyone having a problem, let me know and I'll see what I can do about it.

Cheers Mark

Excuse my ignorance Mark, but where is Newlands in relation to Skinner Towers?

about 5 miles away from boxhill towards Guildford on the A25, or for satnav GU4 8SE, I'll add this to the original post.

Would such a ride include motorways? Motorways bring me out in a cold sweat. To be honest, only feel 'safe-ish' on my London commute. Trying to break this weird safety net, but wouldn't wanna hold anyone up.

no motorways Yael, mainly A roads and a few B's to keep it interesting, but all done at a steady pace.

Cheers Mark.

Would love to give the new bike a ride but the start of this one is a little far for this old lady!

I was thinking the same way Sally. How about we do a weather check the day before and then decide if we fancy it.

Sounds like a plan

Or, we get them to start nearer us? Would that work?

Ladies it's always a pleasure to have your company, whilst I can't move the location of Newlands any closer to you, as both of you will have super comfy bikes; if it would help I could meet you before hand your side of London and lead you to Newlands :smt102

Cheers Mark

Forecast is good so I reckon I might be up for this. Let me consult with Ms Messie and perhaps we can get our new round-the-worlders out of our garages. Just call us Ewan and Charley. I've got sat nav on the bike now too.

Mark as a heads up, this is the route and the roads that will be closed on that Sunday.

http://www.london2012.com/mm/Documen...te_Neutral.pdf

Looks like Newlands corner will also be a no go. They go right past it. Ok, not as first thought, but the roads leading there will be a nightmare to navigate as they go through Dorking etc

As for the ride, Im a might be. Im over in Ruislip this weekend.

Re: an SV rideout.... 29/07/12

Thanks Ian, yeah looks like it could be problematic to start from Newlands, so I've chosen a start a bit further in on the ride, meet at the Junction of the A281 & B2130, it's at the start of the Dunsfold rd, there is a layby just down the A281 from the jct (going south) with a tea van normally there, I'll add a further 15 minutes to the start time to accomadate the extra 5 miles from Newlands as well....;), see OP for full update.

Cheers Mark.

I'm home safe and sound. Got a damp crotch so either my waterproof trousers aren't that waterproof or it's the effect Brock has on women when he's squashed up against them over lunch.

Cheers for organising Mark.

Got rained on all the way home and as I pulled onto the drive the sun came out! Typical.

I still feel a bit of a novice on the new bike but getting out on it in a group definitely helps build my confidence.

I wish I could have have made it. Sounds as though you missed the real heavy rain showers around the South today.

Damp crotch? Brock doesn't usually have that effect on the ladies. ;-)

made the whole day in draggins and leather jacket, not wet at all, a few pics of the day here

Oh for those interested it was 148.7 mile start to finish, hope Matt got back OK and thanks to Ben for escorting him, Caroline's grandad should have a good entry in his diary for today...;)

Cheers Mark.

Thanks all for a fun day - thanks to Mark for the route.

I think a few of us added a few extra miles to the 'official' total... hmmm...

Hope everyone got back okay - not too deflated (Matt) and not too soggy (Ben).

Absolutely. Thank you for making the detour. He rang me not long after I'd got home to tell me how much he'd enjoyed seeing all of the bikes - and he was particularly chuffed that he got to speak to a few of you too, rather than "just seeing them arrive and then ride away again".

Perhaps we can do a ride-past in a couple of years' time for his 100th :D.

Re: an SV rideout.... 29/07/12

Yep, a big thank you to Mark for organising and leading us around a nice selection of roads.

Heavy showers wouldn't be my first choice of weather, but it could have been a whole lot worse. And at the end of the day I rode home in bright sunshine.

I hope everyone else enjoyed it too,

Keith.
