Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Hey new to biking so my SV will be my first baby. Couple of guys in the office have other bikes and were suggesting that I might want to put crash bungs on the bike just in case I drop it etc. also they pointed out they help protect the I've in the parking bays in Westminster.
Any thoughts and recommendations for which ones to go for ? |
R&G
80mph crash and no engine damage. Admittedly the rest of the bikes ruined, but you hopefully won't test them like I did. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Thanks :) sorry to hear of your crash however!
|
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
And the crash bungs are still usable. Barely scratched! Best I've ever used

Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Yes they do save the bike from a good bit of damage.
And use R&G or Motosliders, most the others cause more damage than they avoid |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
hi m8, i chose to get some on mine , you never want to use them but engines do cost a lot of pennys , i just got some mushrooms from e-bay cost less than £50 , east to fit also, goes through the frame and locks each side not just the end section , will give details if you like (no not on commision ) just think i got a good purchase

Cheap crash bungs are fantastic...... Until you use them, you'll quickly relies that that £50 you saved has just cost you £400+ in repairs |

I'm not going to start a keyboard warrior argument for this. Brownie points for crashing? No. Giving proven advice? Yes. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Ok thanks all - i think they might help with the parking in bays too - are they difficult to fit?

Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Yes..... as i found out at the weekend. Very little damage as the bungs did there job :)
Sill cost me for a new pannel, mirror and rear brake lever. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
elliot and bordtea are right , they know their stuff , go for the r&g ones

the left hand side of the bike is practically untouched except the foot peg, bear in mind it was going about 50ish when it low sided and went up the road on its side for about 20 metres+ |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Right - will do - how are they to fit though - their website suggests getting someone to do it as you have to take the engine bolts out?
|
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
easy to do. Basically you have a long bolt that goes through the enging and frame, undo the nut/bolt and tap it out. Then insert the new longer bolt and attach the crash bungs (and bracket). It's pretty simple and easy, even if you only do 'basic' things
|
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Great will get some then!!
|
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
@Daddyjob... I may be mistaken but I think you may have a slight front end alignment issue there. Perhaps that's what's causing you to drop your bike? You may want to get it looked at before you go out again.

Andy, great pointy build quality ;) It hit the kerb and drove along it on its side, throttle was jammed on. Impact was so hard it smashed the spokes from the rim and hub on the front wheel-i have a spoke in the garage  Would you even believe that the headlight bulb still worked!!!

Got a frame that can only be killed by Mr Spiers or Scoobs |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
I'll upload a few more pics of the bike, shame as the tyres were brand new on it at 400 miles old

I have R&G in both their old design and their current design. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
I got R&G crash bungs when I first got my curvey s, I over balanced a couple of times and they kept the fairing off the tarmac and saved the mirror. They were well worth putting on for me.

Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
tbh i have stuck r & g ones on cost me a fortune but hey hopefully they will be worth it in the end. + got the r & g tail tidy on aswell.
|
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
thanks all - bought some R&G bungs, hopefully never need them !
|
Brill! Like you say hopefully you never have to use them, but it another piece of safety gear.

Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
One thing to remember in the future is bungs that bolts directly to the engine is good, bungs that gets bolted to brackets on the frame is asking for a frame you need to change if you ever go down, and some bungs come out to far, it's better that they don't go out beyond the fairing, it's not the fairing you want to protect, it's the engine and frame. If they stick out to far they can catch in a crack in the road etc and the bike will do a fancy flip, and you just increased the damadge by bolting on crash "protection"
I don't use bungs on my SV, and I've lowsided twice, once becuase of a car that didn't want to stop for me in a roundabout and once on track, the pin on the gear lever was broken both times, other than that cosmetic damadge only. On the gixer I've taken the hacksaw to them because they came out to far, now they are flush with the fairing, but I've yet to "test" them on the gixer , it's just a matter of time before they get tested. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
Thanks all - i have fitted the R&G bungs to the bike today - hopefully never need them!
Also they might give me some protection from the scooter brigade in the bike bays too! |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
They're all rubbish, and any personal stories are just that - personal.
The anatomy of a crash is a bizarre thing and what works fine in one will be hopeless in another. There are plenty of truly terrible crash bungs on the market and the ones I suspect are the best seller are utter carp and so variable in quality as to not be worth a tenth of their cost. |
Re: Crash bungs - worth putting them on?
oooh? I dunno Sid?I had an off at Cadwell 2 weeks ago. R&G crash bungs. One bung got bent but it probably saved me £200 quid of fairing.
Also, because it dug into the grass and mud it slowed the bike before it squashed me into the tyre wall. I was quite grateful for it that day. Although the bolt is bent and will have to be replaced I think it did it's job that day. |
