Sharp rating
How many people use the sharp rating to decide what helmet they will buy? I have done my research and decided on a couple of lids with nothing less than 4 stars. I found the website very useful especially how it shows how each helmet differs with impacts!

Re: Sharp rating
I hadnt heard about it when i bought my last lid, but will certainly be using it next time after finding out my flip up lid only has a 40% chance of staying shut in a crash. I will be getting a fullface next time..

Re: Sharp rating
I look at it, but don't take it as well thats 5 stars, and thats 4 stars, i will get the 5 stars. I get whichever one fits me better.

Re: Sharp rating
I have looked at the better rated lids then I'm gonna go along and try them on and see which one feels best.

Re: Sharp rating
It definitely influenced my decision by looking for nothing less than 5 star.

Re: Sharp rating
don't care what the rating. a bad fitting helmet is the worst thing and no amount of rating is going to help in a crash if it fits wrong.
if its a £1k lid or a £1 lid it makes no odds as long as it FITS RIGHT. no helmets are sold in the uk if they do not conform to testing so they are all pretty safe. |
Re: Sharp rating
I could get a safer flip up, but unless its 100% staying closed i just dont think its worth the risk. I hadnt considered the safety aspect of a flip up in a crash before i bought, but im wiser to it now. Yeah they all conform to a standard, but most of the big names seem to go way above and beyond that call of duty.

Re: Sharp rating
I always go by the sharp rating, pick a few helmets which are at 5 star then go try them out to see which fits best :)

Re: Sharp rating
whilst even those in the industry aren't convinced it's a truly representative test, it's the only independent one we have, so for the novice or those without real world experience it's far better than nothing, there are a few "holes" though, so be realistic in your choice, if a helmet doesn't do particularly well on star rating find out why, then make an informed choice.

Re: Sharp rating
I would just go for a mid priced lid that fits well.
One thing I would avoid is cheap and/or nasty flip fronts. Some like early roof helmets were actually quite dear but the chin design meant they were effectively open faced. |
