Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

Hi - new to the board. Picking up my SV650 '07 naked tomorrow, so I just joined the forum. So excited about getting the bike. i'm a Brit with a lot of experience driving on the left. I moved to Michigan about 8yrs ago, and settled here and haven't had a bike since. The roads are nasty where I live, but once two wheels are in the blood, they stay there. I only want to pootle around the district really.

The SV is red (metallic burgundy?), with fender tidy, and a Yoshi toblerone, but apart from that, no mods. But get this - 1500miles in 6yrs. The bike has never seen rain, nice warm clean garage, and the previous owner is an aircraft mechanic. Does it get any better than that! The original exh and fender are wrapped in bubble wrap!

So - what's a curvy, and what's a pointy. Tried searching, but of course with terms like that the search results are the entire forum. Mine has no fairing at all, so it's a blunty? Ah - maybe mines curvy with no fairing and with fairing is pointy?

Re: Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

haha a blunty, i like it!

firstly hi and welcome to the community
its a very simple question, a 'curvy' as its known to sv fans is the earlier first generation sv with the rounded bodywork and frame tubes made between 1999 and 2002. a 'pointy' or second generation (what im pretty sure you've got) has much more angular bodywork and frame, made from 2003 onwards. the fairings depict the naked, bikini, or fully faired model.
if you get a pic up i or someone will be able to conform which generation and style sv you have.

Craig

Well, by that reckoning, I've got a pointy (albeit blunt). Oh, and it's a Yankee :-)

Thanks Craig!

Re: Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

Yes you've definitely got a blunty there, i also have one but in black. Lovely looking bike though, i hope you have may days of fun with her.
PS has that exhaust can got a baffle in it?

Craig

Re: Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

No, the exhaust has no baffle, but it's in a box wrapped in bubble wrap...

Over here (at least in Michigan, home of the mass produced motor vehicle...) there does not seem to be noise regulation on the exhaust (I've heard Harley's and Ford Mustangs that make your ears bleed), and there is no kind of MOT test at all. That's comical - I saw a car the other day, mostly rusted away, but it clearly had no working dampers at all. Every dip and crest had it bouncing like a kids playground ride for the next half-mile.

Re: Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

The answer to the question is simple. A pointy is a fantastic motorcycle with an angular aluminium frame and insectile body work. The rear light is two strips of LEDs and the engine had fuel injection, running two or four plugs depending in the year. These are the K3 onwards SV models

A curvy is a conventional steam driven jalopy with ugly body work and ancient technology for a tail light. Generally speaking curvy owners attend support groups in which they cry, comfort each other and covert pointies! ;-)

As you can see we are a close lot on here united by our love of all things SV, unless of course you are unlucky enough to have inherited a curvy model (surely nobody would actually buy one). You are however one of the chosen and have a beautiful motorcycle, I especially like the colour. We don't get that shade of red in the UK.
Welcome aboard.

Curvy - 1999-2002 (X-K2 models)
Pointy - 2003-Present (K3-L3 models)

There is quite some debate over which is better (if either are) I have a Curvy and much prefer it over a Pointy, easier to fix and has more character.

You forgot to say better looking too.

Unless you happen to want a motorbike that resembles an insect :p

Blue and Gold (Wolverines) all the way. My black-belt son would roundkick me into next week if I pledged any kind of allegiance to MSU / State / Spartans / anything green!!

Re: Newbie - What's a curvy and/or a pointy?

Picked up the SV last night (previous pictures were not taken by me, but after deposit had been paid). Bitchin' 7hr round trip with the trailer to pick it up though. Got home, and it's a real stunner. Great colour too. Can't stop staring at it :-). Ordered a paddock stand - all bikes look even better on a paddock stand.

Only problem was, although we started it couple of times at the sellers house while we put it on the trailer, it would not start at all once home. Tried everything - a good 12v from the battery, but I jumped from the car anyway. Spent ages really concerned - turned out a tie down strap had pulled the plug from bottom of the clutch switch, so it wouldn't start thinking the clutch was engaged. Doh!

First ride was a revelation. So much lighter than my CBR's and VFR's, a torquey too. The un-baffled Yoshi is gorgeous!!

Sadly off to Tennessee on Friday for a weeks vacation, then immediately working the week in Austria so it'll not get ridden for a while. Damn :-(

A curvy is an irreplaceable design with beautiful curving body work and a tail light that is all that pointy owners see as it warps off into the distance. Generally speaking curvy owners attend secret groups in which they plot and conspire with each other to convert pointies and their owners! ;-)

You are not too old to go across my knee young man! :smt041

Don't tell anyone, but I like a curvy frame when it is covered with pointy plastics. Does this make me a pervert? :smurfin:

A curvy looks like a bag of groceries that's been shrink wrapped to save space ;-)

As far as I know, nobody in the U.S. refers to them as 'curvy' or 'pointy'. Here, they are referred to as 1st gen. and 2nd gen.
You should be taking the bike to Tennessee, the eastern half of the state has some great roads!

I got very confused when Mr LPH asked how many of my friends had roundies as apposed to spikeys. Which sounded like some sort of Madonna/Lady Gaga costume competition.

Funnily enough wideguy, I'm in Pigeon Forge as I write this. Came down on vacation, but sadly in the truck. The roads round here would have been Amazing on a bike. Note made for the future!
