Re: Good Back Protector??

there are any number of them out there, forcesheild and Knox are probably two of the best known, however comfort is probably the best quality as it'll mean you actually use it, so the right size is important.

Most textile & leather jackets have an insert as a back protector, but these can be pretty basic, both the companies above make replacement inserts which are much better quality, it's worth check your jacket to see what's in there as it can be anything from a bit of foam to hard rubber.

Cheers Mark.

Re: Good Back Protector??

Yeah, Ive got a Richa jacket and all thats in there is a bit of foam, its practically useless.

I went down to my local bike store today and all they stock is Dianese and they were all far too big, so forcefield... I'll check it out, cheers!

I guess it's best to by in store than online to check for size.

Upgraded my A* back protector for the bioarmour. Good buy IMHO

Re: Good Back Protector??

Forcefield do an insert for most jackets- LINKY 6 different shapes to fit.

Fits nicely in my Halvarssons jacket and way cheaper then Halvarssons own insert,

Found a seperate item too uncomfortable so this is a good compromise.

hannah.s 08-06-13 10:23 PM

Re: Good Back Protector??

Yeah Ive heard reports that separates get uncomfortable. I'll probably go for an insert, easier then as well.

So it sounds like forcefield is the way to go, cheers for the link :D

I have one of these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0041GJUH..._df_B0041GJUHI

It's a lot easier to put on and a lot more comfortable than other protectors I've tried.

I have found that with the standard ones they ride up unless you have one piece leathers on. I have also crashed in it and it fared pretty well.

I have one of these...http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/vie...d=230933443632

I bought it as I wanted some front protection too, very important if you go over the handlebars as you're likely to have your mirrors try and impale your intestines.

Very, very comfortable, you forget you're wearing it tbh, haven't crashed in it but most armour will offer similar protection in a crash so I don't agree with only buying a forcefield one as they are quite expensive.

I got the above for £80 off hein gerickes eBay store about 18 months ago, I nearly paid £150 for it in my local bike store.

I have a full armoured shirt for green laning which has a built in full back protector, cost me £35 from nec bike show, fell off loads of times with that on, had it nearly two years and still going strong, it's very similar to forcefield's armoured shirt @£200, not worth the extra money IMO.

Got the Knox like L3nny too, bought it at the Bike Show in November last year, comfortable.

Re: Good Back Protector??

Those all round protectors look ideal, don't know how comfy they'd be for a female though, haha! I'll have to search for a ladies version, there's bound to be one.

It's been a right pain searching for one... I'd prefer to try one on before I buy as I have no idea what will fit me, but the places around here have limited stock! eBay or bike shows seem the cheapest.

Hannah, I have one of these, a Halvarssons Track Back Protector, its really comfy. I'm a size 10 and so have the S size and the velcro waistband is a comfy snug fit. Probably had it nearly 4 years now I reckon, can't Knox it ;)

Always considered swapping my standard RST hard rubber back protector for a Knox one but I'm never sure if it's worth it?

how much is your back worth :smt102

I doesn't effect anyone but yourself, your choice...

Re: Good Back Protector??

My Hein Gericke textile stunt style jacket originally came with a pathetic foam insert in the back, got upgraded to the HIPROTEC® CE back protector for 40 quid and it is very robust, seems almost as thick as a separate back protector. When you warm up the material becomes flexible so its unnoticeable.

That's a fair point, what I mean is how much better is a Knox backplate than my RST one? I know Knox do good kit, I have a pair of Biomech & Zero gloves, but the RST backplate seems pretty sturdy and not some flimsy foam pap.

Might check out some reviews...

Re: Good Back Protector??

Thanks Missyburd! I'll check it out, still on the search for somewhere I can try one on. It's surprising how few places stock back protectors and then if they do, they're all alpinestar and dianese! I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and go online!

Cheers for all the help guys!!

Re: Good Back Protector??

I have a Knoxx Aegis back protector, with a Knoxx chestguard to go with it.

They're a little cumbersome at first, but I don't feel comfortable if I go for a ride without them now. I've had a couple of crashes with the back protector and it faired immensely well. I've yet to test the chestguard (touch wood), however have read some good reviews.

In the end of the day, any protection is better than none and some are better than others. I think the Knoxx and Forcefield are at the top of the range - I've read some bad reviews and heard some negative stuff about the Dianese etc stuff.

Pity you can't find stockists locally, however if budget/credit card balance allows, go online, buy a few different types in a few different sizes and try them on in the comfort of your own home, then send back what you don't want.

Good luck with it and hopefully you never get to try them out for real!

Aye, forcefield here too - I'm pretty dinky (5'4'", 40" chest) and I got a L2K in medium:

My bro, who is a similar size, got the Pro Sub 4 in medium and though it's supposed to provide better protection I find it far less comfy, though maybe it doesn't fit me as well as mine...

They keep you right nice & cosy in winter too

We got ours online, the thought of traipsing miles to find what we knew we wanted was all a bit pointless in our opinion. I bought without trying on but the measurements are there to look at. My Halvarssons back protector is superb, it's an extra layer in winter and makes a lot of difference when trying to keep warm. When it's warmed by your body heat it moulds to your body shape for extra comfort. Bit dear (think it was about £80-90) but worth every penny. I've had one wee crash in it on the SV and a few more in the first three months of being on a 125 (they don't call 'em L plates for nowt!) and it's been worth it's weight. No injuries to my back it seems at least.

I feel wrong going out without it now like Nobbylad says, so I don't. That's nigh on daily use for about 4 years, velcro's just like new.

Aye, they are made by Forcefield for Halvarssons but the shaping is different.
