ZZR1400 - Talk to me...

Anybody got one?

Looking at 2006-2009 models

Anything I should know? Issues, model tweaks and changes.

ABS worth going for?

;)

Thanks to those who replied here and PM'd me - I'm in touch with DB and Peg...

Anybody else have an opinion?

Not got one myself but anyone I've spoken to about them have said they're an ace bike. If I could afford to buy, run and insure one I'd have one tomorrow. I'll just have to make do with a shock for now!

Re: ZZR1400 - Talk to me...

I had one last year along side the ageing ZRX with a view of replacing it. Undoubtably a fantastic machine but not my cup of tea. Sold it & kept the Rex.

Reminded me of a Honda, had all the character that a bike should be engineered out of it.

It's more like just playing a playstation game. You can pass anything on one of these with ease.

200 RWHP sounds like fun and it is at times but in real life??

Giz a go Mista.

I would love one of these, as mentioned to you this is the only current/recent bike I would buy if I won the lottery.

It doesn't need character if there is one on top of it ;)

You want a 2008 on. (Silver or dark met blue for 2008, the cool as feck black ones are 07 sometimes on a 08 plate)

1st 2years are heavily restricted low down. It got slated. Folk started ripping out the secondary butterflies and fitting a PCIII to try and give it its baws back.

My workmate has a carbed Bird which whups his OE 06 ZZR till well up the revs.

Top five bike to replace my gsx14 so done my research. Good owners sites UK and US with all the good and bad.

Interesting, I'd love a black one (green seem rare as the proverbial hen's gnashers)...

Have seen a few 2009 models in black...

That's what I thought about the BlackBird but boy was I proven wrong. I ran a Fireblade and a Bird at the same time, it just takes a little more planning but you can definitely get the BlackBird around a set of twisties without issue

Aye Kwack saw the error of their ways and I think most other years have black. Gold wheels/ silver wheels, unfortunately none with the black wheels the green ones got! The wrong green IMHO. Feck even a er6 thingy *spit* got the real Mccoy!

Standard ABS on the upgraded later ones too. Handy when you approach things much much too fast.

The character thing I find can be solved by volume. I was in love with a set of M4 retro drag pipes. And keeps my speed down around town.

Anyway good luck. "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility. " lol. :)

Aye, if you can't ride one properly.
Biggest load of steaming poo I've read all day.
As for big and strong....... It might be a manly bike, but I'm female and far from big and strong!

Go for it Wolfie. You know where to find us ;)

Tis a fabulous machine, 40k miles now owned since 2009 there is no road I will not ride it down. There are a couple of downsides but you will find them out for yourself. It will carry you from any A to any B quickly and comfortably. And economically if you are sensible, 270 miles to a tank 40+mpg yes please!

Big heavy lump, fast, alright tourer. Pain in the hoop to work on.

One of my mates bought one of first one into UK second hand, previous owner done STV mod and stuff and generally been a c**t with it putting anodised tat on it. Engine seems reasonable though obviously they'll never get ragged. We had a ride around in lakes, I took his GSXR6 out, him on ZZR... no contest, even though he can usually keep up when I'm on SV and him on GSXR.

Sledgehammer vs scalpel. What do you want the bike to do for you? I don't see ZZR doing anything at all better than your ADV except being a missile in straight line, and probably better on fuel. But far less cool.

tiz not the bike tiz the person upon it. if thats what you want TLW go for it. life's to short. ok so big missiles like the ZZR 14 should not be put in the hands of amateurs but i think TLW know what he's doing.

not my cup'o'tea but each to their own and all that jazz.

Mostly I'm just getting the new bike itch, but it goes deeper than that

KTM isn't a motorway bike, it'll do it, but nothing like as well as you'd think...

Screen causes very odd wind turbulence at head level once over 70mph, steering that is razor sharp at lower speeds is nervous, combined with the off-road front fender catching the wind like a sail, with panniers and pillion it's shaking it's head at 60mph+ although putting 8xMagners in the tankbag did help...

The good missus and I plan to tour Europe a fair bit, no off-roading so a ZZR makes much more sense to me - it's bonkers like the KTM but just a different kind of bonkers

Agreed. The Bird is a very capable bike, you need to get used to it first and it will never be as fast as a SV but its very good at what it does even if I do have a soft spot for one particular example.

Back to the bike at hand, ridden it. Wouldn't say no to one.

Have you test ridden an SMT? It still gets a bit loose on the front when pushed and the wind gets underneath but it might be a little better at <100mph motorway trips than the adventure, and it also has the added benefit of long travel suspension for those crappy b-roads unlike the sports bikes.

Or there's always a new 1190 adv, I've heard the aerodynamics are a big improvement...just year 1 of production and no nicely priced secondhand ones yet...could wait for an ex-demo?

Do you really want to say bye bye to KTM and the big v-twin fun...

Re: ZZR1400 - Talk to me...

Just my wee bit.

I'll be referring to the Hayabusa, but it all applies to the ZZR14.

I've had my Hayabusa for 5 years and 44k miles. These bikes aren't for everyone, but I love my Busa. That's why I've had it 5 years and think that it's a keeper.
The ZZR will handle, just not as good as something with less weight and a shorter wheelbase.
I find the Busa easy to ride, even in the twisties, but within it's limits. It can be chucked around, but you've got to be prepared to have it bite pretty hard.
It's a big lump of a bike to have getting out of shape underneath you, so hustle it at your pearl.
As for the expense of running it, it's heavier on brake pads. I don't go through tyres any quicker than on previous bikes. My bike is still on it's original
chain and sprockets, which I put down to keeping it very well lubed. Service costs are on a par with any 1000cc bike.

From a practicality point, you can chuck hard luggage on it (SW Motech racks) and a higher screen, then go munch those miles. If it's for you, then you'll love it.

A good long test ride is what's needed.
