How safe is leaving you tail bag on and a seat cushion?

Im soon to be starting a job where im commuting to southampton once a week for college, and im going to have to use my tail pack to put my stuff in, im wondering what peoples experiences are of leaving the tail pack empty on the bike? I see it fairly often so some people must do it, but perhaps it isnt worth the risk. Im also wondering the same as im thinking of getting a gel pad cushion or an air hawk(providing i still have a sore **** of the gsxr) and wondering if i can safely leave that, Because thats even more of a hassle, if i stuck with the velcro straps on a gel pad id have to take the seat bolts off to remove. The air hawk looks to have a better quick relase system, though.

Thoughts?

Some people will nick things for the sake of taking them, even when they have no use for what they are taking from you.

Depends how pikey the area is! My tankbag used to just live on the bike when I left it at uni.

This is my thinking...the tail pack isnt major hassle to remove and replace, probs only a couple of minutes each time.

Not sure what the area is like, never really been into southampton. Could ask some freinds that live there i guess.

Ref the airhawk, we have lots of people who think it will be ok to leave It on the bike, and end up coming back having had it nicked. I would personally take them both off. Do you not have a locker or something you can stash them in during the day?

The Airhawk seat has a quick release system a bit like the removable straps on a bra... and I know this because after Mr LPH lost one of the straps he nicked one of my bra straps to replace it as new ones are about £20!

So will be pretty easy to take the seat with you and leave the straps loose under the seat.

Better being safe than sorry. Take it with you. It might never go but all it takes is one ***** to ruin your day.

How many times can you replace it because of some scumbag ?
Once twice three time's ?.
Is it worth the risk ?.
If it ain't nailed or bolted down some xxxx will have it.
IMOHO I'd keep it with me.....

If it's city college I'd be more worried about the rest of the bike getting nicked.

Seriously

Southampton is a **** hole like any other largish city. Not as bad as pompy, but still a **** hole. It's just a matter of time before they get nicked. I'd use one of those tail packs/tank bags which double up as a rucksack. Then you just zip them off and leave the cheap pointless hardly noticable lower panel on and wack the rest on your back. As for the airhawk, for the sake of one journey a week, just live with a slightly sorer bumhole. I wouldn't take it.

Ok cheers all for responses, i think for the sake of 2 mins ill be safe not sorry. Not sure which college it is but the bike will be chained to something aslong as theres something to chain it to, along with 2 disc locks.

Couldn't he have just used a padded one instead of dismantling a bra ?

Have you not thought about getting a top box ? No worries about taking it off the bike, plus you could store the airhawk in it !

Ive had a top box on a previous bike and they are great but i wouldnt consider getting one on a sports bike. Makes em look stupid! It wasnt too much hassle to take the tail pack off in the end so thats what i do
