2002 SV refresh
Hi All.
Noobie to the site but I've been riding bikes for a long time working my way up from a 2 stroke 50, 125 and 250's then onto 400, 600, 750 then 1000IL4s and twins. My last few bikes have been; 2004 RSVR Factory 2003 R1 2005 F800 I wasn't enjoying the RSVR so much, finding it uncomfortable and utterly wasted on the road. So I bought this. http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...6E59B662E9.jpg The last owner was my sister and I rode it home for her when she bought it. I'd not grinned like I did after riding the little SV in the last goodness know how many bikes. I was a little smitten. It's very satisfying using all the bike can give. 4 years later and it's mine. The original plan was to tart up the forks and sell it. Then buy a Ducati 796. http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...9422952C80.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...370A7CF0C1.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...7969E0258A.jpg It's apparent more than the forks needed to be sorted. So begins the strip down and service. http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...281838459D.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Always been ok at taking things apart, it's the putting back together that foxes me. And all those spare parts you end up with.... |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
You wanna be careful. !
You're sister will want it back when she sees/hears it all shiny and loud. |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
Just as a side, what did you think to the F800?

Awesome engine IMO absolutely perfect for the road. Styling very love or hate, oem belly pan improves things and only £80. Same fork rot issues the sv suffer with, riding position used to give me a bit of a weird pain across my shoulders. Overall I liked it a lot. :) |

Ok so started work proper.

What do I do now?? :( |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
Is there any way you can get an easy out down there as the reverse thread may just do the trick ... Hopefully someone else may have a better idea so hold onto it as a last resort before removing the head .
|

Bought an easy out kit. Head gasket and a replacement head.
Joy. On another note the lower fairing I won on eBay arrived. It is, of course a slightly different shade of blue to my bike. :( |

Re: 2002 SV refresh
I know one of my mates had a mobile Helicoil guy come round and insert a Helicoil when he'd stripped a plug thread in his car. Guy retapped the thread in situ, without removing the head, and stuck a helicoil in. Although access to the plug in question was easy.
You case is a bit different, with the remains of the plug in place, but might save you a job removing the head. I guess its the front cylinder and the previous owner hadn't changed the plugs or didn't put any copaslip on the plug thread if he did. |

Yeah front cylinder. The easy out won't fit down the barrel. So head is coming off. PITA and has cost around £70 so far. |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
Those fork lowers look nice. What paint did you use?
Your curvy is the same colour as mine! |

Re: 2002 SV refresh
i have gotten snapped plug threads out by using a big flat head screwdriver.
one thing i have noticed with the 10mm threads that the SV uses is that they are very very easy to snap when installing them. |

Tried with a not huge one but it just ground away the plug end. Hoping one of the easy outs will do it. Heads coming off so as to avoid bits of metal in the engine. |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
Nice legs ;)

Re: 2002 SV refresh
What prep did you do on the forks before you painted them? Just ordered some paint!
|

Sanded back the lacquer and got them smooth(ish) used Halfords high build primer.

Re: 2002 SV refresh
Cheers! Got some of that in the shed

Have you stripped your forks already? |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
Nope - I wont be removing mine, have some refurbed calipers to fit so will remove the calipers and the front wheel and spruce them up that way with everything out the way should look better than they do.

But of progress today.
Spark plug drilled and head helicoiled http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...C27E015B91.jpg Forks rebuilt. http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...9AB7458B62.jpg Hopefully by tomorrow it'll be mostly back together. |

The rebuild continues front calipers.
Cleaned them up as best I could refitted the pistons, fitted the new braided hoses ready to re-install the calipers, new fluid. Couldn't rebuild fully due to not having any red rubber grease. Bought some grease (the largest tub ever!) and eyed up the cans of plusgas, figured I was on the home stretch so it wouldn't be needed. and then decided that I should clean the caliper seal grooves out more, took 2 hours to get the pistons out again and get them cleaned up. Another hour to fit and hook up to the new lines. Started to take the rear caliper apart, pad pins are firmly seized. Of course they are, not least because I didn't buy the plusgas.... Next task is to douse the pins and bolts of teh caliper in plusgas and service, fit new braided hose. In the interim put the fairing back on. M7RR's should be here Monday ready to be fitted to loose tyres. It's fun but I could do without the ********, I'd rather this was a dismantle and clean affair rather than broken bits and seizures... (of course). http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...A450A25649.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...27F955AF54.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...80F9059AFC.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...072F34374F.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...50EFE41CD7.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...8894D3050E.jpg http://i1168.photobucket.com/albums/...D26DB9AE00.jpg |
Re: 2002 SV refresh
If the pins are bad, you'll probably need to drill them out, drill a hole smaller than the pin diameter, and use a fine punch to drift them out, unless you can split the caliper and then plusgas & also heat around the pin hole.
