Home made exhaust
For anyone one as cheap as me, I've found a new way to replace exhausts. I went to Farm & Fleet, my favourite store, and purchased a ford tractor muffler. They are straight through design and very durable. I was going to cut my old pipes, but I figuered haveing a friend bend new ones would make the job easier and more fun in the end. I can't wait!

I am cheap too but went a different route. I gutted the stock exhaust and fitted my own internals, turning the pipe into a glass pack like all of the aftermarket pipes. I have it finished but it is still snowy and cold out so I have not brought the bike outside yet to see how it sounds. If anyone is interested I can give them pictures and advice on how to do it. I will start a post when hear and see how it compares to the stock and aftermarkets.

Hey,
I think the both of you need to post images of these Frankenstein exhausts... Mitch |
Ok, seriously, WTF? I am sitting here trying to picture what you are gonna do, and frankly it kinda scares me. Can some of you please have an intervention for the love of god? What next
"Oh would you look at that, I need new tires. Hey, wait a minute, my tractor has 17 inch wheels in front........... :-k Oh god, I gotta go lie down............ |
thats just scary... |
You crazy americans!
|
I've hear the desmodeci's exhaust noise described as, "sounding like a turbo charge tractor...", maybe that's the effect he's going for
Should be interesting to see/hear the results. Pics/wav files please :) |
I want pictures of this craziness

i'm gonna use the exhaust from an old transit that ive found, if any one can make me an 11 foot long exhaust hanger to support the back 2 boxes id be greatfull.
 |
All of this new found inventiveness has given me an idea. On those long rides, my back and butt start to hurt terribly. Old age, I tell ya. But what to do...... Then it came to me, the stand up motorcycle!! No more numb bum for me. Here is a crude prototype (it's still a work in process you see.)

When I get mine all slapped together, which should be sometime next week, I'll be sure and takes some snapshots of it and post them on here.
|
I started the bike when I had the exhaust off, all it had was the manifold pipes on, and it sounded allright. I didn't rev it up at all, because I was afraid of going deaf, but it had a Harley-like pop to it.

this topic is going to get more views than coronation street did on xmas day
i can see it now   |
I seem to be Mr. Popularity now. I'm taking it to the shop next Monday if things go right, it should be done the same day.
|
I am rolling out the bike on Sat with my new exhaust. I will post up the pics then. I am not sure how to post the pics however. Please tell me how.

Not sure what a tractor silencer looks like but I rebuilt an old slipon can for my CB500 four a while back.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/frank.c...s/silencer.jpg More details at my CB500/F site at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/frank.cooper1/ On the menu as 'Home made silencer' If you have access to a lathe and some ali tubing it should not be too difficult to make one from scratch. The cost would be noware near the price these cans are selling for. |
Hell, that's pretty sharp, buddy. How long did that take?

It's you! I read about your bike in the magazine, whenever it was, a while ago I seem to remember, nice work with the Honda, an interesting approach to the renovation of a useable machine. PS I know what you mean about the 'brakes', another disc would be an excellent move if possible. |

Talking of Harleys I heard a statement the other day. "Harley-Davidson the best American built motor cycle in the world" Well yes, since ther isn't much competition overthere and every where else isn't America despite what Bush thinks Er rant over  |
Where are the PICS?"! We demand PICS!!! :D
Whilst we're at it, has anyone else made up any unusual bits for their SV?! |
I'm sure everyone knows why I don't buy a Harley, even Harley riders make fun of them. In my small town of 4100 people, we have about 20 Harleys, 2 BMWs (both of them closs friends of mine) 1 crotch rocket, and of course, 1 SV. I'm embarassed for all the yuppies who can't make a decision for themselves.
|
OK, enough Harley bashing! Remember 85% of them are still on the road. The other 15% made it home.

I've still got the bike although I haven't used it since I got the SV just didn't fancy another strip down to cure the oil leaks, well it was about twenty years since the first strip down! And the old fashioned rubber and tubes to put up with. The SV certainly goes, stops and handles far better than the old CB, it's even more economical with the gas. The only area that the CB is better is with low speed handling, despite having a claimed weight of 448lbs it feels less top heavy and looks small compared with the SV. With group nine insurance and a price of 4k its a big bang for your buck/pound. |

Hey, isn't that Andrew Charnley :)
(sorry!) |
Who's Andrew Charnley?
|
He's a forum member who will be "chopping" in his SV for a T-Max Scoot type thing.
|
I would not be seen dead in that helmet

I finally got the bike out of my house and onto the road yesterday. The new pipe takes away the "angry lawnmower" sound that the stock pipe produces. It is slightly tinny but only at low power settings which I never spend too much time at anyways. Someone tell my how I am able to post up pictures and I will through them in here.
