Tyre Pressures

I'm running BT-020's front and rear

I'm running standard pressures as dictated on the chain guard, 33 front 36 rear, I know these are for the Metz 4 tyre

What pressures does anybody else use in the BT-020 tyres and will it make that much difference ?

I feel very very comfortable with things like they are which I think is the most important thing I think

Red ones 20-03-05 07:33 PM

35/38 for me - loverly

Sudoxe 20-03-05 07:36 PM

Standard for BT020's are 31?/36. which is what im running on at the moment.

When i first got them, I had them running at 31/41, Which was erm, intresting (Use to have A D307 rear, thought it was the same pressures  ) It tipped in a fair bit faster, felt like it was about to slip on corners etc...

Somewhere there is a website (Avon, I think) that runs through the theory. Tyre manufacturers are supposed to heading toward a standard pressure, at the moment they are not the same for all makes of tyre. Avon suggest 38/42

Stig 20-03-05 08:13 PM

To be honest tyre pressure is a personal thing. People on this site ride with all different pressure levels in their tyres. I would suggest you set them as stated on the chain guard and then dabble with the pressures and find a happy medium that suits you.

Iansv 20-03-05 09:19 PM

usually run 33/36, currently trying 35/40

I believe the tyre pressures marked on the casing are a maximum at a set temperature to be used in the USA and are not applicable here.

As big ape says, tyre pressures are very personal. I think with the modern technology in tyres requires less pressure than older tyre types.

Truck Tyres used to be inflated to 110 psi to carry loads of 32tonne, now they are inflated to 85 psi and carry 44 tonne.

I believe Bike tyres are the same, the carcass has to move to heat up the chemicals in the rubber,

My opinion only, but I think 42 is much too hard for these modern tyres

This post will cause some argument I think :P

out of interest, i have just called pirelli customer services - manufacturers recommended for diablos on SVS K3 onwards is 33F/36R

has anyone tried a different set up with diablos, and what did you think?

fizzwheel 24-03-05 09:20 AM

I think I will stick with 33/36 for now as like Ape says its a personal thing, and I do feel very comfortable on those pressures

I just really wanted to see if anybody had found a setup that worked better than the standard 33/36

Cheers for your replies everybody

i have always had 36f and 36r as this is what the tyre place said was bridgestone recomended figures for 020's,

Um, mine are D204 (although pretty worn) - I found 33/36 to "squishy" and 36/42 skittish, so went 35/38 and all seems well. I'm 11 stone but quite often have luggage on the bike.

Hope this helps,

MT

H-Gerickemark 24-03-05 10:28 PM

thanks will give it a go - been running them at 38 front, 40 rear

38/40

38/40??

Bet that is fun in the corners. I found that dropping it a bit gave me quite a bit more grip. As far as I know, I'm running the standard position on the rear preload. Being a bit of a newb, I'm not overly keen on really quick steering. I will be replacing them in a couple of months anyway as they're heading towards the limits, are pretty square and I hear a set of Z6s calling me.

Have fun,

MT

it does tip in very quick

Having read this thread very carefully, and also reading the tyre thread in general

I believe tyre pressures are critical, but how come the differences are so vast

Rictus (Bows graciously) has put up some very convincing arguments for high pressure, but honestly mine feels like I am riding on marbles at his pressures.

I went out today, after blowing my tyres up to 36 / 42 and returned home very soon after.

Im 16 stone on a very good day :P

My bike feels so much more settled at 32,33 / 35,36

I seem to remember reading on the Avon site that for every 2 psi you drop from their recomendation, you will loose 10% of your tire life

I run Azaros @ 42/38 on the highway but drop the pressure to 36/36 for twisties, in winter I run Pirelli MTR60s @ 32/30 (ambient air temps -15°F to +40°F
