15k service - valve clearance
Hi All,
I've just booked the blue cow in at George whites in Slough on Thursday for her 15k service. Apparantly the 15k service should include the valve clearance as part of it, and they have quoted me 353 quid to do, I also know that I possibly need the brakes seeing to and don't know if I need new chain n sprockets too. So as you can imagine the bill is going to be astronomical. Is the quote they've given me reasonable? Should I be trying somewhere else for doing the job? taking into consideration that the service needs doing to keep my warranty valid. I know that PDQ are also soehwere in slough, will it invalidate my warranty if I have the work done there, or elsewhere that are not a suzuki dealer? Sorry about the questions, but I really want to keep the costs down on this service, any ideas appreciated. Cheers - Mass |
From previous things I've read on here, the valve clearance is just a check and it's not that likely that any adjustment will actually be needed. Some people (myself included) would just ask them to skip the valve clearances and hope the bike isn't one of the very few that have a problem with the valve clearances. Saves a lot of money (£150ish - anyone got a more accurate figure? - due to the amount of labour involved) but the dealer may not want to do it or may not stamp the book if they leave it out. How much warranty have you got to go?
Play around with the search feature as there are quite a few posts about this - was several months back though. |
YOu do know that they will want your bike overnight to do the valves?

Gotta drop the bike off at 9ish. I've booked a bike with the for the day anyway to get me back to work. IF its an overnight jobby then I'll take their bike home - game on! |
Thye engine needs to be stone cold to do the job, I used to leave mine overnight at Marriotts.

Guess I'll be needing a loan bike then to get me home. And as the previous post says, does it really need doing? 353 quid is a lot of dosh kidda??? what de ye think? |
Sounds steep. Don't ever remember paying that much when I had mine.
Ring round some other dealers tomoz |

Righty ho! I will bring Ted with me! All 4 of em!
And more news on the blonde front! |
Ask them if they'll leave the clearances and see what they say - there are meant to be signs that show if there's a problem with the clearances, again, in an older post. This has a bit of info:
http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.ph...alve+clearance includes rictus, who I respect, saying "I would say on the 4 different engines I've checked this on none have needed adjustment, some as high as 60,000 miles." 15,000 is childs play :) |
The valves rarely go out of adjustment it's true, but I'd consider it most unwise not to check them.
Checking is easy, adjustment isn't so easy, repairing a broken one is harder still, not to mention dear. It may not be likely that they'll be out, but is possible, I'd rather know. |
I was thinking of having a look at them as my bike is now nearing about 19-20k. But when, i dont know.
I think the noises coming from my bike is the cam chain tens, so probably i will do it all at the same time. |
If you're bothering going to a suzuki dealer 'to keep up with the warranty', then you should also make sure that the service is carried out in accordance with their plan. (I'm not convinced that you lose the warranty by going elsewhere tho).
The valve clearances are easy and quick to do if combined with other jobs. I've done mine when changing coolant - once the radiator's off then the front clerances can easily be checked (and the front plug's a doddle). It also gives a chance to clean the cam covers. The rear cylinder isn't too much trouble anyway. The engine does have to be *stone cold* Brakes and sprockets could be done by onyone to save money. |
£350 sounds a tad extortionate tbh. The most expensive service i have ever had was £249!! As for the vavles. My bikes at 41000 and to date has never needed to have its valves adjusted. They are checked every 16-20k.

Had mine checked at the 15k service with new rear brake pad & new choke cable fitted and the bill came to around £280 ish. £353 to start with sounds expensive.

The actual price is £299 inc vat and bits and labour etc.. I think the £335 (Sorry got353 from somewhere) includes a new front tyre which I had to pre-order. BTW: I've just had 16.5k out of the front tyre  verified by 2 independant bikers in work, that it still had life in it   this morning as well.. and NO I don't wheelie all the way to work   Shocked myself even 8) Mass |
And what lovely courtesy bike did you get from them?
I remembr getting a ZX6R when my sv had it's first service! Mentalo bike, scared myself senseless on it on the M57 on the way home from the dealer! Fantastic! Still want a little 600cc four cylinder bike! |

96???? Christ! I remembe being told that the bike would never make it! Ha ha! It's a Honda, that's all you need to know! I also remember trying to ride and unfold the map on the way down there, and failing miserably, with the map ending up somewhere on the A49 near Telford!
Those were the days! And just to p you off Mass, the sun is blazing here, and I'm about to saddle up the Superlambbanana and head up to Preston to spend the day with a fast blonde on a fast R6! lol |
