engine vibration
is engine vibration begining at say 5000 rpm's normal, esspecially in the lower gears?
Well, they all vibrate a bit. The question is, how much?
Mine starts to vibrate when I switch it on. Engines tend to.
lets just say it accelerates smoothly until i hit 5000 rpm's in first gear and then i start to get some engine vibration , in other words it "feels" like the engine is straining ..is this typical V-twin AV behavior? it does it also in second gear and so on just in the higher RPM's

Mine ('99 S) does just that... on cracked throttle starts to "struggle" at 5k, open throttle, ops, we're at 10k, time to change up a gear.......... |
whereabouts are you ryrides? this 5krpm engine problem is obviously seriously bothering you. I would suggest you attempt to find another "known good" SV to ride to compare with yours, or ask another SV rider to take yours for a quick spin. Then any engine problems would quickly become apparent.
Alternatively, get a dealer to look at it. More expensive and probably less reliable though. |
Where are you starting your acceleration from? A standard SV doesn't pull well at all below 3000rpm or thereabouts, and can lead to really bad juddering... And you don't want that, apparently it damages the bottom end.
The SV's working power band is from about 5000 to 9000 rpm, that's where it makes effective power. Anything less, and you might as well be on a 250. It certainly shouldn't be labouring at 5000, in fact it should be getting ready to take off. What's needed is more facts. Ride it a few times right from the lowest revs it'll ride smoothly at, then accelerate at various speeds right up to 9 or 10000rpm, see what happens each time. Also, do you have an end can or air filter fitted? That could be leaning you out at about those points, causing a loss of power- if this is the case it'll go away at higher revs. |
ill try opening the throttle more and see if that helps..actually it does seem to do it more at times than others maybe i havent been paying attentionto the throttle enough...as it is..i have a good dealer that i can take it too the next town over..but thanks for all the advice folks...good riding...Ryrides

There's a harmonic frequency on mine (low mid-range, but can't tell you exactly where, RPM-wise), where for perhaps 500 rpm or so, under load, the vibes suddenly increase, then go again. Part of the character, innit?
At 5k revs the motor of the SV is just coming on song when things get really interesting. How long have you been riding? It is indeed a very odd question if you dont mind me saying?! If you dont want a touch of vibes/character then you chose the wrong bike my friend! :) Jeez if you got to 5k revs on my bike you would definitely sh*t your pants!
actually my bike pulls strong in first gear as soon as you hit the throttle and has a smooth pull all the way through i just seem to get a little more engine vibration starting around the 5k mark..i have the naked model i do think they may be geared a little differently then the S models at any rate....as far as the sv not pulling good until 3k rpm this doesnt seem to be the case with mine..it was more a question of the engine feeling a little rougherr at the higher rpm's not neccesarily a big lack in power..but i dont feel a big power increase after 5k either ...its smooth from throttle open all the way through..
sounds like a broken tacho or a completely different bike with an SV badge on the side...

Do you actually face the front went riding the bike? When writing 5k do you mean to write 5mph? That would explain a lot, but not enough to uncover yet another wind up merchant perhaps?
Its possible its restricted although i dont know why it would be.....this happens only in the lower gears.IE 1st primarily and very little in second..first gear is geared low at least in the naked models anyways..they do have different sprockets than the S models..i didnt have a restrictor installed on it in any case..so i sont think so
ahh finally got the nutts to really get the revs way up there in low gear...she growled like a dog and the front wheel came off the ground  oh the joy..guess its not restricted after all...
