4k Service

Rang round three local dealers from work this afternoon to get an idea of price. Prices ranged from £150-180. Given that according to the manual only the oil should be changed (as the filters only require inspection) I wouldn't have expected it to cost anywhere near this much or take two hours as quoted by all three. Before I wonder down to the nearest HG for their oil & filter offer, is there something obvious that I'm missing here?

The 4k service consists of:

Inspect and clean, adjust, replace or lubricate as necessary:
Air Cleaner
Spark Plugs
Fuel Line
Engine Idle speed
Throttle Cable Play
Clutch
Radiator Hoses
Drive Chain
Brakes
Brake Hose
Break Fluid
Tires

Replace:
Engine Oil (Filter stays put)

Tighten:
Chassis Bolts And Nuts

ive just done the same mate! got the HG kit and did it myself, change the oil yourself and save 100 - 150 quid! robbing gits.

thats alot for a 4k service. look elce where it should only cost £30 for oil. and about £70 plus vat. about £120.

In fairness, I'm quite happy to service it myself if that's all the needs doing.... time is the only issue as the car needs doing as well! The only thing that would concern me is if something like valve clearances needed doing. According to the handbook they don't, but it was mentioned by one of the dealers I called.

I believe that is something that needs to be done during the 7.5k service.

15,000 for the valves.

They have to be cheeked at 7.5 as well as 14.5k.

Looking at the handbook, it is 14.5k for valve clearance and 7.5k for Throttle Valve Syncronization. What's the difference?

throttle body sync...... same thing as a carb sync except syncing the 2 FI throttle bodies

valve clearance is the clearance between the cams & fully closed valves

The 4.5k service is probably the most expensive for the least amount of work. Especially when you consider that most of the service is only checking things over on the bike. Something that you are likely to do as part of daily riding checks. There is nothing technical to do.

Save yourself a bundle and do it yourself, that's what I say.

So is the warranty void if you do it yourself?

Stig 28-03-06 07:36 AM

Warranty says that the service must be done by a competent person. Are you competent :?:

Subject to contrary belief, it is also not true that you HAVE to have the servicing done at a main Suzuki dealership.

The only issue is that you do not get a stamp in the book. Should you wish to claim warranty work because something has gone wrong with the bike. You have to prove that the servicing was carried out as per the instructions manual. THEY have to prove that the person was not competent to do the servicing.

If it were me, I would have my own log book, where I could list all of the servicing and work that was completed on the bike. Complete with receipts.

The only other thing than that is when it comes to selling a bike. Peeps tend to want to see a fully stamped service book. Personally, anyone that could produce their own servicing schedule log book of all the work that they have completed along with receipts, would impress me far more than a fully stamped service book. This would show (to me) that this person has looked after his bike more.

tigersaw 28-03-06 09:47 AM

Do it yourself, keep all the receipts, take digi pictures as proof if nescessary, stamp the book yourself with the stamp you got from ebay for £10

kwak zzr 28-03-06 02:26 PM

Ive stapled the receipts into the service book.

Gazza77 30-03-06 07:49 PM

Well went to HG on the way home tonight. As expected, no air filter for K5 (they don't do one), so given a 2nd oil filter instead. :D

kwak zzr 30-03-06 08:16 PM

all you need do now is save yourself a few quid by D I Y
