Best opening Bass riff......

Hot on the heels of the gee-taar riff thread.
The best bass riff intro. Even though I'm a guitarist not a bassist, those big sweaty apes can really nail a good hookline at times

OK, I'm going straight in with a heavyweight contender for best of all time.

Iron Maiden - The Clairvoyant

northwind 22-04-06 02:24 PM

It's either Wake Up by the Arcade Fire, Only In Dreams by Weezer, or Rumble(d) by the Yo-Yos.

Razor 22-04-06 02:25 PM

RHCP funky monks.
Flea gets my vote as best bassist.

rob13 22-04-06 03:33 PM

RATM prob gets my vote

iprideaux 22-04-06 03:45 PM

The one they used to use for the motor racing (Fleetwood Mac?) or Smoke on the Water

That'd be Fleetwood Mac - The Chain

I also really dig Flea and the bassist from Tool (Justin Chancellor). Tool's bass sound is distinctive, innovative, melodic, clean and so, so heavy... like letting yourself drown in mercury.

My vote would have to go to RATM and Bombtrack though...

Spread Your Love - Black rebel motorcycle club

Sid Squid 22-04-06 05:43 PM

California Über Alles by the Dead Kennedys

TimTucker 22-04-06 07:51 PM

Ace Of Spades by Motorhead, surely?

I'm a huge fan of Geddy Lee of Rush, but I'm struggling to think of any great opening bass riffs he's played, so I have to give it to Lemmy.

I hope you asked him nicely first.

lynw 22-04-06 08:45 PM

Damn missed the other thread as was travelling back from Scotland.

Otherwise would have had Van Halen Aint Talkin About Love as one of the best guitar intros :D

Off to soak in a bath now - why does 400 miles never sound that much but feels like a thousand? :? :(

wyrdness 22-04-06 09:58 PM

Probably 'The Chain' or 'Ace of Spades'. Too jetlagged to think of any others at the moment.

the_runt69 22-04-06 10:33 PM

Anything by Level42 or did anybody see Sting do message in a bottle with just the bass on the secret policemans ball.

Halonic 22-04-06 10:46 PM

is this as good as we got?

a little RHCP, a RATM mention and the inevitable Mark King?

no Primus? no Pantera? No Nirvana? Not even Pearl Jam!!!!!

For shame!!

Oh and if we're allowed obscure stuff that most people won't of heard of, my other vote goes to "My Red Hot Car" by Squarepusher.

OK, so it's a little bit further in under the guitar line, but Addicted to that Rush by Mr Big. It's just unplayable. Plus the bass follows the guitar solo later on, and that exactly slow either.

And you thought Mr Big only did that song "To Be with You".....

Nope, got a few of their albums. If its 80s rock then Ive probably listened to it/got it on vinyl/got it on tape/got it on CD. :D

Warren 23-04-06 09:05 PM

square pusher is a good bass riff, but its not really a riff is it ?

a riff is something that is played,

Treacle 23-04-06 11:04 PM

Humm wher shall I start?

Over the falls - Primus
Canonball - The Breaders
War of the wars - Jeff Wayne(bassist Herby Flowers)
Westway - Sky
Lessons - Rush
Anything and everything that Mick Karn has done. I could be here for hours but I would be taking up far to much of my time.

the_runt69 23-04-06 11:43 PM

Jusr being watching the best 100 Rock tracks and forgot London Calling by the Clash

John McVie played some mean bass on that track. :)

But if your talking bass players, one can not over look Rush front man Getty Lee.

:)

Nexus242 24-04-06 03:25 AM

Okay so I just listened to Tom Sawyer and I'll toss that out for a great opening bass riff.

And I'd like to add Amiee Mann, fomerly of Til' Tuesday, in as a great basist too.

mysteryjimbo 24-04-06 07:23 AM

Anything Victor Wooten. It aint rock but he's a mean bass player.

Gotta be the opening bass riff from the Stranglers - No More Heroes.

A track that begins with bass....

(ps Squarepusher straddles acoustic and electronic and boy can the man play!!!!)

I think Billy Sheehan was glad to get a note in edgeways when he was gigging with Steve Vai for D.L.R.

cyphertheory 24-04-06 09:53 PM
