Your favourite lyric

Just came across one that knocked me out, wish I'd noticed it a while back... From Million Dead's "To Whom It May Concern",

"My letter to the human resources department
says you've started a war and you'll get what you started"

What's yours?

(full lyrics are:
"Tonight will be the last night of my record-breakingly successful run in the lead role of the greatest play of the century. Unprecedentedly warm praise from critics and public alike has met my portrayal of a man at his desk who gives a damn. “Oh, oh, oh, if I could only see the clear blue sky from my office window, then oh, oh, it would only take a steel grey day and I’d take my bow.” And I’d like to thank all my friends and fans for always pushing me to soldier on. So one last time (for the cameras) my greatest soliloquy: “Oh, oh, oh, if I could only see the clear blue sky from my office window, then oh, oh, it would only take a steel grey day and I’d take my bow.” To whom it may concern: I’d like to nominate myself to receive an award as a small symbol of recognition for my body of work – a lifetime of selling my body to pay the bills. But my heart and my mind are mine, mine, you will not win this war – this is just a battle. Oh, oh, oh, well I’ve surrendered you my physical attendance here, but no, no, no, you will not take my soul – lest we forget why I’m sitting here. My letter to the human resources department says “You started a war so you’ll get what you started.” I’m only working here because I need the f***ing money." repeat)

Special D Come with me .....great dance tune

At the end of every week each one of us becomes a freak.
Tonight the dj makes us move and then the sweat drops from the roof.
Each time you let the bass beat hard to know we all spend now apart.
Just activate your energy lets sing the song and come with me.

The speaker system brings the sound,
In light effects I'm spinnin round
All the people on the floor they shake their bodies cry for more.
Never let this feeling go and let the music take control.
Forget your problems and be free,
Enjoy this moment, come with me!

Turn it up!

kitten 10-05-06 09:23 PM

mine change all the time but at the moment they go:

We walked the narrow path,
beneath the smoking skies.
Sometimes you can barely tell the difference
between darkness and light.
Do you have faith
in what we believe?
The truest test is when we cannot,
when we cannot see.

the rest of the song incidentally is beautiful too, its called it cant rain all the time by Jane Silberry xx

These are verses, not lyrics! You're all disqualified, even though they are great. Except for the one about having had a lot of d***.

CAKE - Race car ya yas

The land of race car ya-yas.
The land where you can’t change lanes.
The land where large, fuzzy dice
Still hang proudly
Like testicles from rear-view mirrors.

In common with most aging hippies, my favourite is probably Hawkwind's "Spirit of the Age". Here's the beginning - what a great first line

I would have liked you to have been deep frozen too
and waiting still as fresh in your flesh for my return to Earth
But your father refused to sign the forms to freeze you
Let's see you'd be about 60 now,
and long dead by the time I return to Earth
My time held dreams were full of you,
as you were when I left; still underage
Your android replica is playing up again it's no joke
When she comes she moans another's name

The cafe's are all deserted - the streets are wet again,
There's nothing quite like an out of season holiday town in the rain . . .

Make Yourself & Stellar by Incubus. Fantastic Acoustic version on the Special edition album

A little odd on there own but work really well in the song.

Make Yourself
If you let them **** you
There will be no foreplay
But rest assured
They'll screw you complete
Til' your ass is blue and grey

Stellar
Meet me in outer space
WE could spend the night
Watch the earth come up

"The trouble with your brother, he's always sleeping with your mother.
And I know that your sister missed her time again this month"

Great opening line to a storming pop song. Pulp - Razamataz

"You hurt me baby, I flinch so when you do.
Your kisses scourge me, Hysopp in your perfume"

From the Afghan Whigs debut album, just because of the point I was at in my life when I first heard it.

Your mama's got a peg leg that's real, real thick.
Your mama's got a glass eye with a fish in it.
Your mama's got an afro with a chinstrap
Your mama's got a pegleg with a kickstand
The sad fact, your ma smokes crack

Here's a lovely little one............

I ain't happy 'bout it, but I'd rather feel like sh*t than be full of s*it!
And if I offended you, Oh I'm sorry
But maybe you needed to be offended
But here's my apology and one more thing...f*ck you!

Suicidal Tendencies - You can't bring me down

(A tuneful little ditty actually!)

You're perfect, yes, it's true
But without me you're only you (only you)
Your menstruating heart
It ain't bleeding enough for two

"Two little boys,
Had two little toys;
Each had a wooden horse.

Gayly they played
Each summer's day,
Warriors, but of course!"

Classic. Still brings tears to my eyes with its poignant observation of a young life lost in the American Civil War.

With its depth, its well researched history, its passion for all human feeling and.... zzzzzz.......zzzzzzz.........zzzzzzzz........

Meatloaf classic track paradise by the dashboard light.

A miniscule short snippet from said track

"I can see paradise by the dashboard light"

so many conurtations it can have but for me it's the bliss of riding (in more ways than one ) :P

northwind 10-05-06 11:42 PM

I love that... "Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night..." Meatloaf at his mighty best.

We'll never be as young as we are right now...

one more, bit new for me this

I like your pants around your feet
And I like the dirt that's on your knees
And I like the way you still say please
While you're looking up at me
You're like my favourite damn disease

So never judge a book by its cover
Or who you gonna love by your lover
Love put me wise to her love in disguise
She had the body of a venus
Lord, imagine my surprise

Bring me a wheel of oaken wood
A rein of polished leather
A heavy horse and a tumbling sky
Brewing heavy weather.

You've made me want to listen to that now. Fortunately I've found that it's on my iPod.
"Heavy Horses, move the land under me" Great stuff :)

Wish you were-Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

And also from the Floyd
Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

Peter Henry 11-05-06 10:15 AM

Obviously a dire lack of musical taste on this forum. I cannot believe that no-one has selected from the long catalogue of classics from a famous motorcycle loving crooner!

Here is my suggestion from his envelope pushing , timeless masterpieces:

An old maid walks around the floor
She's so fed up, one day I'm sure
She'll drag me in and lock the door
When I'm cleanin' windows

When I'm cleanin' windows

:P :P

Anonymous 11-05-06 10:25 AM

O Peter dear, how CLEVER of you to remember the marvellous George!

I'm a little bit more of a modern girl and, although I don't know the words, I LOVED that "Frankie goes to Holywell" song. It was about Yoga....was it called "Relax"?

Stingo 11-05-06 10:26 AM

Quite like this play on words

You're just like crosstown traffic
So hard to get through to you
Crosstown traffic
I don't need to run over you
Crosstown traffic
All you do is slow me down
And I'm tryin' to get on the other side of town

Hendrix, Jimi.

"The death of one is a tragedy, The death of one is a tragedy, The death of one is a tragedy, The death of millions is just a statistic" - also a quote by Stalin

"I'm not a slave to a god that doesn't exist, I'm not a slave to a world that doesn't give a sh**"

"Suffering from something we're not sure of
In a world there is no cure for
These lives we live test negative for happiness
Flat line, no pulse, but eyes open
Single file like soldiers on a mission
If there's no war outside our heads
Why are we losing?"

Down down, you bring me down
I hear you knocking at my door and I can’t sleep at night
Your face, it has no place
No room for you inside my house I need to be alone

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do

Turn turn, I wish you’d learn
There’s a time and place for everything I’ve got to get it through
Cut loose, you’re no use
I couldn’t stand another second in your company

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do

Stone me, why can’t you see
You’re a no-one nowhere washed up baby who’d look better dead

Your tongue is far too long
I don’t like the way it sucks and slurps upon my every word

Don’t waste your words I don’t need anything from you
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do

I am the resurrection and I am the light
I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like

I am the resurrection and I am the light
I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like

I am the Resurrection - The Stone Roses

No time no place to talk about the weather
The promise of love is hard to ignore
Your second chance wasn't getting any better
Labour of love is ours to endure
The highest branch on the apple tree
Was my favourite place to be
I could hear them breaking free
But they could not see me

The Jam

"A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac"

A police car and a screaming siren
A pneumatic drill and ripped up concrete
A baby wailing and stray dog howling
The screech of brakes and lamp light blinking
That's Entertainment.

A smash of glass and a rumble of boots
An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth
Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat
Lights going out and a kick in the balls
That's Entertainment.

Days of speed and slow time Mondays
****ing down with rain on a boring Wednesday
Watching the news and not eating your tea
A freezing cold flat and damp on the walls
That's Entertainment.

Waking up at 6 a.m. on a cool warm morning
Opening the windows and breathing in petrol
An amateur band rehearsing in a nearby yard
Watching the telly and thinking about your holidays
That's Entertainment.

Waking up from bad dreams and smoking cigarettes
Cuddling a warm girl and smelling stale perfume
A hot summer's day and sticky black tarmac
Fedding ducks in the park and wishing you were far away
That's Entertainment.

Two lovers kissing amongst the scream of midnight
Two lovers missing the tranquility of solitude
Getting a cab and travelling on buses
Reading the graffiti about slashed seat affairs
That's Entertainment.

Filipe M. 12-05-06 11:35 AM

Summer nights such lonely times, this memory does bleed
I need you in my life again
Fantasies release me from the bondage of my fate
The days pass like the falling rain

Your eyes reflect like mirrors the beauty in your soul
But anger shatters precious glass
Cant you recall the intimate secrets that we truly shared
The faith and trust we swore would always last

I only have myself to blame, you know it takes my breath away to see you cry
To love I implore, I scream in the air, claw at my chest, rip out my hair
Embrace me or let my spirit die

Rescue me or bury me, rescue me or bury me

Time is like a prison cell, for those whose crime is loneliness
When freedoms banging at their door

When all has been said and done, you must decide swallow your pride
And reach out and take these hands forevermore

"Rescue me or bury me", Sex & Religion, Steve Vai
