SV650 Supermoto

Few people asked about this, so thought I'd drop some pics in for your thoughts!
Its a 2000 SV650S, rode for 10K miles in standard guise (the mudguard and exhaust lasted about a month tho  ) then fitted the mid nineties GSXR750 forks, yokes, clipons and mudguard, and junked the airbox for pods. It ran in the inagural year of the Straightliners 12.50s class of drag racing, winning four meetings and overall class championship. After that, 30K miles and the influence of riding a TDR250 for the winter (not to mention two buckled wheels and axles from Edinburghs pot holed roads! ) I decided it was to be my 'adventuring' bike for rides in the highlands, camping, touring and a trip that was planned for Iceland.
It has KTM bars, yokes (keeping the steering lock with some fiddling) and forks, original wheel, stem, spindle, calipers and discs, headlight from my drag 'busa (best headlight ever), Acewell clocks, short dogbones, one off bashguard and exhaust.
In the garage ready to fit is a late model rear caliper (replacing the crud catcher original), underbraced swingarm (made by adding half a ZXR swingarm) with chain roller, TLS tank (to improve range), fourpot front brakes and mastercylinder (keep wearing out the slide pins in the 2 pots), just needing a fettle :)
It rides like no other bike I have ever ridden, corners more controllably holding higher speeds, deals with slither much better, jumps the speed bumps and is uncatchable on singletrack roads. Over 70 the strain on the neck is a bit much but then that would be illegal anyway
Hoping for some snazzy paint soon, and to get a better shock in the rear (Momesso Gaspare had an XR600 I think but they seem like hens teeth, alternative suggestions welcome!).
See you on the road!

 I've been looking forward to that... Crazy stuff! But very, very cool.

Looks interesting, any more pics?

Looks good.

Sometimes people do things up and they look cr3p.

That is defo different.

Just seeing those wooly b***ards next to an SV gives me flashbacks. Take 'em away and :smt071 'em! Serve up with mint sauce, then they're lovely.

Cool project there.
Funny tho. Just yesterday I was looking into the possibility of a swap to a TLS tank for a couple of extra litres of go-go juice. Is that a straight swap? The rear hinge looks good to go. What about airflow into the box without the little scoops in the SV tank? Not a problem for yours with the pods i reckon.

And what about all the fuel pump gubbins?

haggis 31-05-06 07:59 PM

Fuel pump. Is that in the recess to the rear?

I only had a poor quality photo of the underside, couldn't tell what was there. Or if the airbox/carbs would fit.

So you reckon it's a non-starter? Difficult to tell what the fit would be like anyway, without offering one up to the frame.

northwind 31-05-06 08:03 PM

Fuel pump on teh carbed model's on the RHS of the bike, bolted to the frame. All that's in the tank is the level sensor and the vacuum tap.

Speedy 31-05-06 08:38 PM

Thats WELL cool! I really like it! 8)

Last time I looked the TLS was fuel injected, hence what about the fuel pump? or is it get a plate made up to fit big hole left in bottom of tank when pump is removed and hope it dont leak :o

haggis 31-05-06 11:13 PM

As Northwind points out, on the Sv it's mounted to the frame. I assumed the TL had a similar setup.

The pic wasn't too clear. It just looked like a black sticker on the base.
I guess that was actually a big feck off hole!

It could be plated and welded, so the capacity would become 18litres plus the displacement of the pump. Bonus! :D

I'll wait and see how Motorolly gets on with his. As someone who's run out of fuel on a Sunday* (everything is shut on the Sabbath here!) I'd consider it a worthwhile mod. Two extra litres brings the SV up to a 4 gallon tank, enough for 200 miles easily.

*Had to push the SV uphill for best part of a mile in full leathers with camping gear, on one of the hottest days of last year when returning from BSB at Knockhill. I think I got about 187m and ran it dry, last 20 on full petrol light.

motorolly 31-05-06 11:20 PM

Thanks guys :)
Fitting the TLS tank is a little more involved than a bolt across I'm afraid.
The top mount seems ok but the bottom needs chopped off and flipped roughly upside down not to over shoot. I planned on making a plate to replace the one the fuel pump would have been mounted on. (no fuel pump = +0.5litres)The seat will need modded too to fit round the tank and probably something done with the sides as the TLS seat goes round the bottom of the tank a little. Getting rid of the airbox makes the bike a whole lot easier to work on in general; raise the tank and everything is lying there for you to work on rather then hidden under the box. It also give me a lot more space so I might drill and weld on to the bottom of the S tank to increase fuel load even more. I'll keep you posted!
One note on the pods, its needs massive jets to feed that full on induction roar, I get 135 miles on a tankfull now (hence the S tank as a very serious option)! i can't say I would go back tho, it spins up great, power is up a little, but mainly the control and feel of the pickup is so much better.
No more pics at the moment but will add to the thread as things progress.
Repacking the can tomorrow, think I woke the dead this evening....!

motorolly 31-05-06 11:26 PM

You too? Hehe I did Pumpherston to Broxburn last week, ran dry, just me and a rucksac thankfully.
Guy stopped with 5l in his boot, usually to bail his bro out he said. Restores your faith in human kind.
Tried to get to Skye Backpackers on Sunday Haggis, but its not possible to get from the Fishnish ferry to the last one to Armadale in time, not that we didn't try!

northwind 31-05-06 11:30 PM

How big jets do you have in there? Did you drill out the air jets, or just adjust the fuel side?

motorolly 31-05-06 11:44 PM

Something in the mid 150s rings a bell, no drilling required except to the plug over the idle screw out. Same needles too but I think they are raised a bit. Its been a couple of years.
I think the pods create a lot of turbulance at higher revs in the inlet which is why the bigger jets, less economy and yet only mild power change. You can certainly hear the induction, a road legal can made very little difference last time I tried!
It idles like a single, really slow and even, even sounds like a supermoto

northwind 01-06-06 12:01 AM

Hmm... Do you remember what pods it is? I know the DJ kit recommends 185s or 190s with K&N, and Twin Works ended up with, IIRC, something ridiculous like 210s after they drilled out the air jets. FWIW, I'm running 170s with a stock airbox, tank spacers and a BMC Race RS filter, seems a good balance between power and temperament...

Sorry for all the questions, this is the price you pay for having such a different bike ;) I'ev thought about pods, if only because it'd be kind of cool to open up the lid and find them there ;)

motorolly 01-06-06 12:15 AM

No worries, questions are good, we're here to share SV info after all :)what kinda milage do you get with 170s?!? or 210s?!
I had real trouble getting pods to fit, noone seemed to sell them specifically or specced for the SV at the time. In the end I went for air socks from Demon Tweaks, about 10 quid kinda like a mug made of foam. Not junk tho they are still PiperX items.
I'll put up an MP3 sometime, see if I can get a few pops and backfires in

Bloody hell, I'd have probably seen you around if you'd made it. I was carving up and down the Mallaig road on Sunday afternoon/evening trying to find a camping spot. Weather turned pishy tho so we hit the pub.

motorolly 01-06-06 12:30 AM

Lol aye likewise, you mean mainland side? A830, then nipped back down the A861 to stay at the Glenuig Inn when we got turned away at the port. Was myself and a KLE supermoto. Can't say the weather was bad there tho, it was really patchy all over the country mind. Had a camp fire and beers until about 3am, chilly, not advised without the camp fire!

210s, I have no idea... But with mine, I can burn a tankful in about 80 miles if I set my mind to it ... I'm sure I can get that figure lower if I try :) Thta's real point-to-poitn thrashing though. Day to day, it varies so much I can't really say. 130 is probably the average now, but since my commute became a complete hoon that's fallen off again. It's a bit like owning a Superduke, without the redeeming features...

Having said that, the fuelling's still not quite perfect in the midrange. I've got the top and bottom pretty much nailed, but it needs time on the dyno now to settle it.

Razor 01-06-06 11:03 AM

Was your bike featured in Streetfighters Mag?
Your 2nd pic looks like a page from the modifiers monthly :D

Nice bike, looks like what most of the manufacturers think most of us should be riding in the next few years.

What did you do with the crack case breathers?

motorolly 01-06-06 11:26 AM

We have ways of dealing with crack breathers round these parts
I kept the condensation tank off the bottom of the airbox, then took a breather pipe from that down to the little IrnBru can on the front right.
Yep the photo is from the 2004 Streetfighters Extreme mag, it had a couple of pages. When the bike was running in Straightliners 2003 it came up a few times in the mag as they cover it. We also melted a few tyres for MDM one afternoon. Er, and actually set fire to the bike too  molten rubber on the rear exhaust caught fire and dropped in to the undertray lighting that up too. Three of us 150yrds from the fire extinguishers huffing and puffing on it trying to muster up the need to pee.

motorolly 01-06-06 11:29 AM

Crikey! 80 miles to a tank?! I'll shuddup and stop complaining then!
My TDR250 gets about 70 but its a 25mpg 2stroke and thats why we love it

Black Rider 01-06-06 11:58 AM

Nice bike!

Only if I let it :)

motorolly 02-06-06 12:00 AM

Gave the SV and clean and a polish so took some more pics :)
Quite intersting how pebbledashed the bash guard is, I guess that is why the paint gets stripped of the front of the cases!

Ah, I've seen you out and about... I recognise the numbers and the ridiculous number plate. Did you used to pass through Liberton Brae from time to time? Sure that'd be where it was, I remember looking down from the top deck of a bus and thinking that was the only angle anyone could see your registration :) And I think, a cargo net stretched over the back seat.

motorolly 02-06-06 12:26 AM

Yep rumbled :) I used to work up near Loanhead. The plates not that bad, at least it's the proper size, not like the one I got nailed for; for missing 3mm of the 6mm border, sigh. I saw a guy up in Malaig the other day, German bike I think, with the plate on the undertray, not even a kicked up tail  The 901s are from the Straightliners days. Ddi you ride up that way ever? Yellow SVS? Ah come to think of it I remember seeing a blacks S as well sometimes.

northwind 02-06-06 12:29 AM

I know that yellow one, complete with scorpion... Used to see it every day :) I worked at the bank of scotland on the corner of the brae and drive.

haggis 02-06-06 12:33 AM

Yup, I'm liking that.

Not in an 'It's beautiful' way, and I'm no oil-painting myself!
More sort of 'That looks like a right laugh'!!!

How do you get on with the Acewell? Got the fuel gauge on there?

Mine's alright for most things but the rev counter gets tied in knots a bit too often. Can't seem to sort it, no matter how I take the pulse up.

And for a moment I thought my plate was cloned, we're only a digit apart.

21QUEST 02-06-06 01:21 AM

I very much like it. Looks mad(sounds a bit like the owner if I may say so  ) , kind of ugly but at the same time beautiful in a funny kind of way.

Sort of bike I'll spend time going over and trying to figure out stuff about it just for the hell of it if nothing else.

Cheers
Ben

Grinch 02-06-06 01:41 AM

So now we just need someone who can make the SV go on water and maybe fly and the little bike would have covered everything...

Nice bike...
