Cutting exhaust
Hi Guys
I've just bought a Carbon Can Co exhaust for my 2002 sv650. I'm pretty nervous about having to cut the exhaust pipe to fit the can so I would really appreciate any advice you can give me, particularly on whether I need to remove the whole system before I cut the pipe and the best way to cut it? Thanks Gemma |
If you can get hold of a Dremel thats the easest way to cut it I did mine on the bike with a hacksaw just take your time and measure twice cut once!!!!
|
Yeah, I just cut mine with it in place with a junior hacksaw. Used a big one for some of it, but that was an incredible fiddle, it was hard to get a good angle with it in place. Get a pack of new blades! Good cans

In which case, how difficult is it to get the exhaust off?
|
You don't need to take the full system off just the rear section there's 1 joint behind the swing arm and 1 under the bike undo them and with a little persuassion or brute force in my case it should come off!!!!

You might need new exsaust clamps though they sometimes break when trying to undo them!!!
|
Definately easier to do in place, though. It's awkward to cut the pipe in place or not, because of the inner baffle, it's almost designed to twist hacksaw blades. You could use a grinder to go through most of it then finish with a hacksaw too. But either way, I'd definately do it on the bike.

I would too!!!!!!! |
So how do you decide where to cut it? I noticed the standard can is V V V long so I'm not sure at which point I would sit the race can. Do the cans come with a strap as opposed to a fixed bracket to accomodate this?
|
thanks for the info guys. I think i'm gonna go for it on the bike with a hacksaw. Will stock up on blades first!! :-)

Get a strip of ply wood to protect your swing arm that way you won't scratch it :D
|
So the new cans come with a link pipe? does than mean Ill be left with like 2 or 3 inches of original link pipe and an original can with about 8 inches of pipe sticking out of it?

You should get two link pipes. One pipe you use to fit the new can to the bike with and another link pipe that you can use to refit the standard exhaust back to the bike should you wish to. |
You usually cut about 2in from the weld!!!!!!!
