Removing oil from your driveway

Suppose you did an oil change last night in the dark & you get up this morning to find a drive way that's a little bit oily.....Is fairy liquid & water a good thing to throw on it or will that make things worse?

I was told to use kitty litter to soak it up but I don't have a cat & really could do without the agro of going out & buying one ;o)

Get some Coca Cola and splash that about. Sorted.

Or dig your whole drive up, and switch it with next doors when they are not looking.

Cement powder will soak it up, or you can buy specialist cleaning stuff from Halfords and the like.

Hose it down (or rather up-hill). The water will bring anything that's soaked in up to the surface nicely (as it does on the road when it rains). Do a good job of hosing it.

Then put sand on it & let the sand soak up what's there. Leave it a good 12hours at least. Same trick works for petrol stations, only that's not strictly oil.

PS> Don't use kids playsand, it's engineered not to soak up too much water/crap. Not sure about builders sand, but I live near some beaches & would prolly just take a bucket & spade to get my own (whilst the tide is out, wet sand doesn't soak much up).

Whatever floats your boat I suppose....  Ohhhhh, you meant for cleaning the drive!!!

Sir Trev 12-10-06 11:45 AM

Will you lot stop saying hose!!!!!! The damn things are still banned in my area.

Gunk also do a driveway cleaner which I've used on concrete slabs with good effect. Trouble is it left a clean patch on the slab and I had to clean the others to make them all match again.....

northwind 12-10-06 12:07 PM

I use Ross driveway degreaser from Halfords... Works a charm. Doesn't leave a clean spot either :)

WTF? I've forgotten the number of times recently that I've turned up to work soaking wet. How the hell can a water company be so inefficient?

northwind 12-10-06 12:28 PM

Low water tables, apparently, drained aquifiers and such. The current rain's more than enough for hosepipes etc, but not for those and also for reversing the effects of the droughts.
