What 'project' for £100

8) My g/f has just said she'll buy me a £100 ****ter of a bike to tinker with.

I'm thinking of some sort of 250cc crosser that i can get running, stick road tyres on and use for the winter. (I'd have a look myself but spooks is about to start)

Given a £100 budget what would you have??

Lots of beer, a budget of a ton will buy you a grief of a bike*, the hangover/s will be less problematic.

*Not necessarily true, but far, far more common than the reverse.

Seems to me that the most likely thing to get that could be worth doing would be a crashed CBR6, though like the man says, you're more likely to get a lot of hassle.

hovis 23-10-06 09:53 PM

bag of bolts

you might get a non-runner if you are willing to fix her up, but it will prob cost more to fix
at least £600 for half decent m0tor-x

i'm sure you could come round and help carsick!!!

i think ebay might be the key here... in fairness i'm not expecting much and as an engineer i'd like to take the engine and completely strip it. Surely on single cylinder motorcross style bikes there are plenty of rebuild kits etc

the fun is in doing the work and playing with an engine!!

Sheer class!!

I dare say we'll spend the odd evening looking at it, both shaking our heads saying "Well, I didn't drop that bolt into the bore."

I suppose you have the advantage with a single that they're simple to work on.
I've got a gpz500 back home that needs new carbs and a new signal gen to run. Good winter hack, I just can't be arsed to get it back on the road.

Marshall 24-10-06 08:04 AM

Ive been watching ebay for a couple of months now for a winter hack, £100 isnt going to get you much, if anything. the CB250's are pretty cheap about £175-250. Ive still not got anything, im now looking at GPZ500 / K75's. still got a month or so to go till i dont want the SV out

northwind 24-10-06 09:06 AM

That'd get you a GSXR wheel, you could work from there :) "Just needs a few parts love"

Sounds just like something my hubby would say/do

Demonz 24-10-06 10:22 AM

Besides Fleabay - where is the best place to pick up CAT C/D bikes?

Carsick 24-10-06 10:27 AM

Local freeads and stuff like that. People put them in for spares or repair for stupidly low prices, just to get rid of them.

Oh - here you go. Then you have £99 to spend on repairs  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/honda-suzuki_W...QQcmdZViewItem

Almost worth buying those, and dumping them in the front garden to annoy the neighbours

Steve H 24-10-06 12:34 PM

You could probably find a mint Honda Hornet for that amount.
Whats that you say, they cost more than £100. Are you sure?

ebay's deffo the key.
My £80 car lasted a year without any work so don't see why a bike can't.

Spend the remaining £99 on beer as suggested by Sid Squid, it'll work out better than trying to resurrect that lot.

I like the look of that GS850 :D

Must resist buying more crap old bikes, must resist buying more crap old bikes, must resist buying more crap old bikes.................

Blue_SV650S 24-10-06 03:06 PM

Are you going to give her £100 in return to buy herself something to ‘tinker’ with whilst you are messing about with the bike?!!? ;)

I know someone with an old MZ250 that you can probably have for £30. They are in Farnborough, so not that far from Swindon :) It was running a few years ago and has now just sat there since, so a straightforward resurrection :)

CoolGirl 24-10-06 07:19 PM

I've got an XT500 to get off my hands that won't cost you much* more than that!

* but it does work
