Very Sad
Model who lived on a diet of tomatoes and apples dies.

Very very sad. Such a sad situation that I'm actually pleased you described it before I clicked the link. Won't be clicking the link.
Don't get me wrong, diets have a purpose, but some are just plain stupid, and I'm often ranting at people because they're on a diet & don't need to be. |
Sad?
Sad that the industry still uses sick people to model their wares, sure. Sad that these people are seen to be the right shape and size to be, sure. Sad that she's dead? Not me. She chose that lifestlye and that job. No one forced her at gunpoint to be a model. I'm sure the pressure on her to remian thin so she could get more work and more money in her bank was put on her by no one but herself. She could at any point have given up that job and sought help for her illness but she clearly chose not to. The industry that employs the likes of her and promotes it is guilty like any other indusrty of using guilable people to serve their own ends. The fact she pushed her self so far as to die is her own stupid fault and i for one have no sympathy for her. Now if she was just your "average" girl who suffered from an eating disorder and died from it i would feel very sorry for her, but for someone who chose to make money from it? No way Jose! The pursuit of money and fame has led many people to an untimely death and i'm sure it will continue to do so as long as Nano-Nobodys are put on the pedestal of celebrity and see "celebrity" as a consequence-free meal ticket. |
strong views there.

Its upsetting. The modelling industry needs to change its veiws and have strict guidlines. Perhaps even setting a minimum kilocalorie / kilojoule intake per day, or setting a minium weight limit.
I dont get this trend to be super thin. I hate skinny girls. There was an article in Heat mag that my girlfreind purchased going on about these thin "celebs" vs bigger celebs. The general conclusion to be drawn from their survey is that most guys like a curvy lady. Take that british actress, the one in pirates of the caribean. She looks horrible, being so thin. As do other females of similar size. I tell my girlfreind all the time to be quiet about her body size, to me its perfect, even though sometimes she says she has a "fat" tummy and "big" bum. My thoughts are similar to spidermans. Im not sad the girl is dead. Its her fault, she could have done something else and lived on and on. Granted, some people cant help but become anorexic due to medical conditions and similar situations, but this girl chose to eat so little. And she didnt even seem to back it up with diet supplements. In my book, a healthy diet is one where you eat all sorts of differant stuff. Dont go nuts on chocolate, but likewise dont go balistic about eatin just salads. Have a bit of everytthing. After all, we're chemical entities, and we need to source our nutrients from all sorts of differant places. Eat in moderation (dont eat so much you become fat/obese) and live happily and healthily. cant see the difference between an 'average' girl and her... its still the same pressure (social or financial) that is creating this kind of obsession with being skinny. All of us suffer from it to a degree.... its about finding the balance within ourselves... unfortunately some people lose that balance.
I agree to an extent with what you are saying, maybe it is greed for fame or money that pushed her to this extreme, but, have a heart, maybe this would have happened to her anyway, we just wouldn't know about it. Girls/women (in particular) are bombarded with what is apparently attractive, it is difficult to rise above this sometimes, and be content with yourself. I wish more people (myself included) could grasp the concept of making the most of yourself, being strong and healthy, and not trying to change yourself. It is difficult when you are having 'a fat day' or 'an ugly day'. She just seems to have lost her way and now her friends and family are paying the price |

Now if this story said she had been driven to this by the pressure of her job and because she wasnt happy decided to quit that job and seeks help but on her road to recovery she died i'd feel very sad indeed for her. But she chose to maintain that lifestyle and you live with the consequences of your choices. I feel far more sorry for innocent casualties in wars who are just written off as "collateral damage". You never see their pictures in the paper and a sad story to go with it. |
Give me a pie and cake eating lass any day... so we can both eat pie and cake together in our naked food covered gorging...
|
=D> =D> well put spiderman ( would we expect anything else from our super hero )
|
Poor lass, probably never got to feel the pleasure of KFC!
In that picture it looks like she still has some meat on her arm, and the dress actualy makes her look fatter. |
why does the press asume you have to be anorexic to be slim. Just look at any dancer! they eat like a horse and are so slim - but a much healthier looking slim :D promoting exercise would be a far better way of doing things

Thankyou Tomcat, I've been trying to put into the words the same sentiment as you expressed in your first reply for about an hour now and failing miserably.
From what was said in the article, she didn't seek help because she didn't think she had a problem. Is this a pretty normal symptom with anorexia ? |

Also, if you are making a good living (i.e. geting paid well) off being thin, why put on weight? That could be the thinking on alot of these anorexics minds. Matt |
It also says she has been doing it since she was 13, I can't imagine she knew much other than modeling so was probably scared of letting herself go
|
Such a sad waste of a life in all respects.
RIP |

And like drinking or gambling, one of the first problems is realising that there's a problem; but unlike drinking, I'd imagine anorexia can probably kill you long before you get a chance to identify the problem, let alone get help. |
Women are like SV's in many respects. i.e Curves are much better.
IMHO theres something wrong in a society that promotes IMHO stick thin skinny girls with no curves as being an attractive body image, its just not attractive. Peer & Media pressure has a lot to answer for IMHO. |

I'm in no way making light of her illness FS but she chose to stay in an industry that was not helping her be any diffrent and for making that chice she gets no sypathy from me. You seem to suggest that just cos someones sick they should be given free reign to live as they wish and then we should feel sorry for them. Would you promote a gambling addict to one of the late night poker shows and tell him "at least you get to be on TV" or would you tell him to stay away from the environment that isnt helping his problem and mental state? Thats the point i'm making, she seems to have made no effort to get away from a lifestyle that was damaging her and for that reason i feel no sympathy for her. |

As a female who spends a lot of time in male company (no I am not gay, butch or anything other then a straight forward kind of girl!) , I hear so often men saying they like curvy, feminine women, who enjoy life, eating, hobbies etc....... but soooooo many girls just don't get it. So many are still more interested in their hair, weight, make up etc to actually spend time doing something interesting. It is as though they have cocooned themselves in this world of girlieness that they can't see or hear men saying what they like. Before you all shout at me, I do believe that everyone wants to feel attractive to the opposite sex (if that is your way) but somehow the way of getting there has got confused.
I can only assume this is because they believe that that is what men want, they believe that by trying to look like the t*rt on page 3 they can somehow earn respect. Images everywhere we look pamper to these thoughts. It could make me very angry the more I think about, if only more women could recognize how much more beautiful they are when they fulfill themselves with interests and hobbies, like biking or whatever it is that makes them kick. I am all for making the most of yourself, fat is not attractive, but nor is skinny, Healthy, natural and vibrant is surely what we want, and this comes from more depth then body image. More and more we are seeing men behaving the same way also I think it is sad. |

I offer one thought: Marylin Monroe was a size 16 and weighed about 120lbs. 'nuff said. |

She clearly had people around her ho were aware of it and the tone above suggests to me a simple case of denial. She didnt want to admit it to herself even tho she knew family and friends were right. Like a lot of people with addictions do too. But deep down they all know they have issues. Tomcat... what you say is spot on by the way. |

What you seem to be saying is that she knowingly and with forethought, committed suicide in an unpleasant manner in order to further her career. That makes no sense. |

I am more in agreement with the assessment of the situation provided by FS than the rather cynical and cold opinions offered by Spidey on this occasion.
The girl's condition was fuelled by her desire to remain a leading figure in the profession she was involved in. An all encompassing profession that is difficult for us outsiders to fully understand. The sooner the bench mark size is raised to say size 12 the better for all. |

This is something that confuses me. Yup, there's a lot of pressure to be 'thin' to be attractive but the fashion industry is the ONLY thing that promotes stick thin as 'vogue'...
Take a look at any mens magazines and none of the women are stick thin. Granted there's not any cellulite or a slightly chunky thigh that hasn't been airbrushed out but they've still got flesh on them. How has the fashion industry gotten so ridiculous? |
Northwind racks brains for a time when high fashion wasn't insane. Fails. The main difference these days is that nobody at all wears the lunatic stuff, unlike the court of the Sun King...

it is sad, but she must have known that she could not live long with a diet like that?
