Camera scrapped to cut tailbacks
thought this was quite a funny story...

Even the mobile speed traps could do with taking notes...
The amount of tailbacks that would occur on the A13 just because they'd stuck a van under one of the overpasses was ridiculous. My journey on the bike would become infinitely more dangerous when traffic backed up in unexpected places. Cagers do more sudden and stupid things. |
feel something wrong here, Motorway 50 MPH ????? thought the speed limit on motorways were still 70 MPH

Its very congested at that part of the motorway, with lots of junctions, tight bends for a motorway, so the slower speed is probably justified, the camera never was. It's about time someone saw sense. However I suspect that because all knew the camera was there thus congestion slowed everyone below the threshold the camera was not making any money. Move it to someplace else and get more revenue.

"Westbound congestion of a Friday evening regularly tails back in excess of five miles because people brake through instinct on observing the camera even when they are travelling within the speed limit."
I *hate* that. You're driving at the speed limit and the idiot in front suddenly slams their brakes on because they're spotted a camera - even though they're not speeding. |

Unfortunately, this exactly the sort excuse the scamera police will be using to make the cameras less visable. Not only more catches but 'less' accidents caused by people slowing without the need. But more fines, more money for even more cameras. |

reminds me of my local council, who discovered traffic flowed better when a power fault disabled a set of traffic lights and pubicised they would remove them in order to maintain flow and never did.
The same council who removed a lane of the main drag into town to plant flower beds. The reason being it would cut congestion in town if traffic could not get there. The same council who having been bribed into allowing planning permission by requiring the builders to install a set of roads then had traffic lights put on a major roundabout. You now wait for 3 minutes at 3am on a sunday morning not seeing a car on the roundabout before you can enter. Strange we used to be able to safely use the roundabout before the lights. |

Add to this uphill, blind on-slips and yes, 50mph is well justified. I share mogs' cinicism about the removal though. |
