love my Hornet but ..

I love my bike but one thing annoys me immensely. I just cannot read the clocks in the dark. I would have to lay down on the tank to find out how quickly I am going. I know you will all start saying why dint you get SV, but I just like the Hornet. As a matter of interest are the SV's clocks any good in the dark?

tricky 17-01-07 08:41 AM

The curvies are fine (analogue gauges) never ridden a pointy in the dark.

Viper 17-01-07 08:46 AM

Never had a problem with the clocks on my curvy.

Hornet :smt078

thor 17-01-07 08:55 AM

The pointy clocks are very good. No problems in the dark.

cuffy 17-01-07 08:57 AM

Why didn't you get the SV?

Well, someone had to say it :D

Demonz 17-01-07 09:05 AM

Sounds odd (interp: dangerous) if you arent able to tell how fast you are going in the dark. This is a first - Suzuki beat Honda in build quality??

Mogs 17-01-07 09:22 AM

Post it on the Hornets nest, it maybe a known problem with an easy fix.

It explains why Jabba's so slow when the sun goes in :D

Might be that dark visor and sun glasses  or just his age

Jabba 17-01-07 09:28 AM

Which Hornet do you have? I have an'03 - white dials, red needles and dials back-lit. No problem for me.

Cheeky git

I should point out that my recent 3pts/£60 were earned in the cage in broad daylight.

It least I go out in the dark, unlike certain BMW riders (who shall remain nameless)

Well could be the age I suppose :?

I decided to commute to work on my bike and the clocks give me real grief. I glanced on the clocks whilst approaching a speed camera and had no clue what speed I was doing. I guess in a region of 40 but could have been 50 too. These days you can apparently get ticket for doing 43 in 40 miles zone. So I sit and pray and my undies are now proper adidas with 3 (or maybe more) little stripes. Still love the bike, so those little things wont spoil it for me.

05 model. looks the same judging by the description. But I really struggle to read them, maybe I need a new visor?

hovis 17-01-07 09:37 AM

how about GLASSES

the_runt69 17-01-07 09:46 AM

Dunno how good the clocks are as two of the bulbs arent working and as I've crushed the speedo cable that doesnt work all the time either.

Eat more carrots or get an SV surely no one could love a hairnet that much? You could? Could ya, really? Nah, don't believe it!

All you need to see is a needle whizzing round that circular dially thingy 8)

The thing you constantly go off of

Steve H 17-01-07 10:55 AM

Perhaps the reason you can not see the clocks is the same reason for buying a
bike that looks like a Hornet in the first place. ie. Your eyesight is very very bad.

northwind 17-01-07 11:01 AM

If you're finding it really bad, maybe an aftermarket option like a Veypor might be your solution- not cheap, but very clear.

TSM 17-01-07 07:11 PM

Yeh, i cant read my speedo/tacho at night either.

It would help if i changed the bulbs which have all gone.

Heed 17-01-07 10:39 PM

Just buy a small torch. It's cheaper :D

Top idea mate. You can get one for under £4 on eBay. Much cheaper than fixing the Honda's shoddy electrics :P

You are right dear friend.....their comments are made from a position of jealousy, realising that they too could have aspired to a Hornet if only they'd realised it.

They are like you in that regard, but at least you have the option of taking the fairings off your bike, swapping the clip-ons for bars and getting somewhere close to greatness. On the bike front, I mean

Thank you for your support

Forget the petty namecalling bit.

You sir, are a muppett!

Of the highest order I may add.

Thank you and goodnight.

DanAbnormal 19-01-07 02:36 PM

Have to say the clocks on my 04 hornet are perfectly readable even with a dark visor during the day. You aren't wearing your dark visor at night are you!? Could be your eyes matey, one of the signs of dodgy mince pies is struggling to see in dimly lit areas.

Hope you get it sorted.

Heed 19-01-07 02:54 PM

I do actually love the hornets. I got an 06 plate one as a courtesy bike while I was having my battery swapped and at high revs it went like the clappers. I don't think I'd swap my SV for one at the moment though.

You are bound to say that on this forum, but really you would have one wouldn't you?
I tried SV, Hornet, DUKE and Fazer. All 1-2 years old. Hornet just felt ride. Well screwed together, nice looking, goes well too.

I'd have got a Hornet but the SV beat it out on price. But it turned out to be the right choice, the Hornet's ace but I don't really like the engine. If Honda made an 80bhp vtwin with quality suspension and good build quality, I'd already own one... I'd still swap the build quality instantly, even the biggest SV fan wouldn't pretend we can compete.

Heed 19-01-07 08:13 PM

It's the extra money that buys you that build quality though. I'd have a new(ish) hornet tomorrow but I'm kind of attached to my SV. Sometimes it's nice being the underdog.

northwind 19-01-07 08:25 PM

Oh yeah, I don't doubt it- but now, I'd not buy a Hornet if it was cheaper than the equivalent SV, knowing what I do of the 2 bikes. When I was last bike shopping I really had no idea... I bought the SV without ever having ridden one. Absolute luck that it happened to be a very good choice for me.

Certainly wouldn't say get a SV instead of a Hairnet - good bikes though they are - get a CB 1300, Honda build quality and you can see the dials

Some bloke in this month's RiDE mag managed 100K miles on his Hairnet. He has a top box fitted...

northwind 20-01-07 07:59 PM

Yep? Randy O's got a hundred and fifty thousand on his original SV motor. Though to be fair, it's buggered :)

That Hornet looks in better condition than a 10000 mile old Bandit though... Mechanically, if you take a 100000 mile Suzuki and proper Honda they'll probably be in broadly the same condition, but cosmetically the difference is ridiculous.

I like the naked one. Looks the part.

Peter Henry 22-01-07 09:51 AM

Going off at a tangent somewhat maybe but, yesterday I rode behind a guy of Dani Pedrosa proportions on my fave err hum road  . I tell you something he was absolutely carving through the bends and I was very hard pressed to stay with him.

My eye brow was indeed raised at the oft derided Hornet.
