World of Warcraft

Anyone play it??? A mate plays it and gave me the cds so I could give it a crack ...

Just fired it up and to be honest I am not convinced it is the 'online sensation' it is cracked up to be ;)

p.s. It was this that inspired the conversation I had with him in the first place!! (If you are into WoW and like South Park ... you are in for a treat 8)) Click Vid

Slapstick 08-02-07 11:48 PM

I play WoW. I have an undead rogue on Bloodfeather (server name) named Slapstick... hense my user name here. I've played since the begining and play what they call "end Game" meaning all the hardest dungeons etc.
If you start playing, give me a shout :)

northwind 09-02-07 12:39 AM

Online crack my friend. I tried it but it didn't take, I'm playing Eve Online now (space game) and it's pretty good, not exactly madly exciting but it's very immersive. Or it would be, if it weren't for the fact that I'm playing it, posting on the org and watching the west wing at the same time.

zx6man 09-02-07 08:40 AM

I have 2 accounts.......on Turalyon server....Gets better the more ya play I think...

Blue_SV650S 09-02-07 09:35 AM

ALL - I have played Guild Wars, I think it is better (Graphics certainly are) and has no monthly subscription ... 8)

WoW - guaranteed to suck you in and ruin any relationships you have...

_Stretchie_ 09-02-07 10:57 AM

I've got that Dawn Of War Warhammer thingy. I saw my mate playing it and got hooked. Never go online, hardly ever play it either but when I do I get hooked for hours.

I'm crap at it too, but just love it (bit like my bike  )

Be warned, the difficulty curve's an absolute *******, the tutorial's harder than completing some games  But that's good, because it helps to keep the haklfwits out  Noithing worth doing comes easy...

Iansv 09-02-07 12:38 PM

nah, its too kiddy...

currently playing starwars galaxies and a bit of vanguard.... have played eve before but couldn't quick get into it

Will be dropping those and moving onto Pirates of the burning sea in June tho www.burningsea.com should be a superb game

SteveH 09-02-07 05:41 PM

Stu 10-02-07 12:54 AM

Came home tonight and my son started describing a Southpark/WoW scence to me - don't know if it's what you posted (got the same problem as Hovis).
Anyway, my son would like to play WoW but, as well as not wanting to encourage him even more on the cumputer, I'm not stumping up for a subscription. So is there a free version? :D

He's only 7 so Northy's might not be the best.

EVE-Online is cool 8) Just about to do my first mission 8)

Gonna connect another monitor up and create an 'extended desktop' as things get obscured real quick on one screen ;)

EDIT: that sucks ass ... EVE doesn't seem to be able to understand extend desktop  I have found a setting to 'window' it ... but each new window is a child of the main window rather than a new window I can move :(

northwind 10-02-07 02:48 PM

There's definately a windowed mode, but I've not found it

Do the learning skills and then salvaging ;) And get out of your starting frigate as soon as you can drive something better...

Blue_SV650S 10-02-07 05:33 PM

I need cash for a better ship!! ... you don't fancy giving me 80million ISK do ya northy!? 8)

I am "YouWillBowToMe" (a bit ambitious, but hey :D) if you want to contact me mid-game ... !!

ethariel 10-02-07 05:35 PM

In Eve, hit escape for the options menu's

Tab 2 - Graphics, 2nd down on left tab - switch from full screen to window'd mode.

Just cancelled my Eve account (been playing for 2 or 3 years as a lot of folks i know have rejoined WOW on Xavius (PvP).

Played

EQ - 5 accounts over 6 1/2 years, endgame all expansions all now cancelled
EQ2 - 1 account, played for 30mins....LOL - disks burned in back garden
DAoC - 2 accounts
SWG - 3 accounts till combat revamp than cancelled disks in bin
Guild Wars - 1 week, disks in bin
Anarchy Online - 20mins, disks in bin
Eve - bout 3 years, 10 mil Skill Points, Maelstrom's as main ship and Mining barges for cash :) acct expires on 12th
WoW - back to it after 2 years off, fun again - Xavius server (tho being ganked by a 9yearold then corpse camped is a PITA, luckily have a few 70 toons to help out :P)

Colin

Yeah, that is what I did, and I get the game in a window rather than fullscreen (no problem there), but the windows I open are 'docked' as child windows to that ... I can't drag them out of the main window to elsewhere on my desktop ... so no real use ... I can't find a setting where I can get these windows outside the main eve window ...

northwind 10-02-07 05:52 PM

Oh right, so you want to get the in-game windows like Market, etc out of the game window? Yep, that won't work, I think.

Hah, Blue plays as a girl :) I've sent you some pocket money, ought to buy you any of the Caldari level one frigates- which is probably all you can drive anyway ;)

ethariel 10-02-07 05:55 PM

Ah !!

Possibly you can use a dual head card to create an extended desktop as Eve does recognise the widescreen view on my laptop, however all that would do is extend the whole view and would suck come combat time. Never tried as i find that 1280x1024 is loads of space.

Yes that was the idea, have main screen as well main screen and have market, journal etc windows on a second monitor rather than superimposed over my main screen ... I do have a duel out card ethariel but as we have found, that still doesn't solve my problem

Northy, you call ~20million ISK 'pocket money' how much do you have FFS??? :D

What to buy ... what to buy!!? :-k :)

ethariel 10-02-07 06:19 PM

Actually the 20 mil ISK was my idea of pocket money :P

Colin

northwind 10-02-07 06:23 PM

Yeah, I only sent you quarter of a million :)

*********** hell!!! :D 8)

Norhty - that explains the 'loose change' ... I had earned about ~180k melsen and I have just shy of 20.4k!! now, thought ~20.2million was a bit of a weird sum to be transferred!!! :D

I hope ethariel has shamed you into putting your hand a bit deeper?!?!? :D .... who whats to come and blow me up in my training ship before I buy a new one?!?! 8) :)

ethariel 10-02-07 06:28 PM

Enjoy the game, as Northy says, the learning curve really ramps up, but please once you are in a frigate with a couple of guns, start working on your learning skills if you think you will be playing the game long term, 2 months working on them will save you soooo much time when it comes to L5 skills later.

Just bought a new ship ... it was ~350k ... neat ... but it is 8 jumps away ... time to have some tea whilst I am traveling me thinks!! :D

This game is dangerously addictive :? What is the monthly subs?

northwind 10-02-07 07:34 PM

Blue, since you've got nearly as much cash as me, the only donation I feel like making is a big bagfull of railgun shots :) I bet you 10p that you've bought a ship you don't have the skills to drive, incidentally...

looks like the nearest thing to elite that i've seen...downloading now! 8) was recently considering buying an old archimedes riscos computer on ebay so that i could play elite again!

northwind 10-02-07 08:22 PM

It's a bit like Elite, and quite a bit like Mechwarrior 2 I reckon, and a lot like Tai Pan on the spectrum.

No-no ... I didn't go daft, bought a ship I could fly :)

What I did do mind is buy a weapon for it that required more power than the ship could supply

To be honest I think it is a fab game (I love space/future stuff 8)) …. I can see how it could suck you in ... as today has proven, it will absorb ALL of your life if you let it ... there is just so much to do I reckon I could spend 24/7 for 6 months and still have plenty to do ;) ... I have been playing it on and off all day and I know I have barely scratched the surface!! ;) Its really cool to see a game has that much potential … the ‘shoot-em-up’ or car racing type games never ‘keep’ me for very long!

So although I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it ... I don't think I will allow myself to get fully sucked in ... I could see that you could spend thousands of hours on it … not only am I scared I’ll spend every available hour on it, but I just don't have the patients for that sort of immersion these days really …

ethariel I didn’t get too carried away and its actually hard to spend serious cash at my chars level of training and when you are feeling your way around the game … I still have 19.5 million left … I’ll give that back to you at some point … thanks for the lend :) Oh … after I give northy back his 250,000 that he slung in too :)

Do either of you want to blow me up in my 300,000 ship?? 8)

northwind 10-02-07 10:49 PM

Fly to Vaere and I'll blow you up, if you insist...

It's potentially a very addictive game... You only have to look at the amount of work people put into the corporations. I already have a job though :) I think the skills system does help to avoid me getting too sucked in, since you don't need to be constantly grinding away to gain XP, it just happens all the time- strange at first, but it makes sense after a while

emcf 11-02-07 12:40 AM

just done the tutorial....pretty hefty couple of hours! got a load of cash to buy first decent ship....what's good?!?

ethariel 11-02-07 01:13 AM

Prolly a Probe to start, you can go the mission route or miner to start.

Colin

Warren 11-02-07 02:16 AM

nope, id rather live my life in reality than live my life online ;)

the graphics are far superior.

northwind 11-02-07 02:41 AM

Any decent frigate will get you through most level 1 missions, emcf. Can't be bothered with mining meself...

Can you fly through galaxies in real life then?!?!? ;) ... no?!!?? ... well that is where a virtual world where anything is possible is fun ;) But where the virtual world can be so much more interesting than the real world it is always a struggle to keep perspective on it ... i.e. you don't become that dude in the South Park vid :D

There are things in the real world that the virtual world can't give you, but you have to accept there are things that the virtual world has to offer too ;)

sinbad 12-02-07 04:27 PM

MMORPGs scare me. I'm weak and easily hooked on "harmless fun". So I do my best to steer clear.

I prefer to waste my time playing a little known online racing simulation known as : www.liveforspeed.net .

It's class, great physics, not arcadey at all, only features cars at the mo' but the main dev is a bikerer so who knows. Anyway, free online demo (excuse the *****s that haunt it though), so give it a try. Works with mouse-keyboard or a game pad, but a wheel is better.
