bar ends

hi

im looking to replace my bar ends as they look crap....

do they offer a usefull purpose weightwise or is it just for the looks..

ive seen these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d..._promot_widget

it says they will fit but can someone confirm as they are coming from states ...i dont want any issues....i want some in chrome or anadised silver or blue....are there any better ones about..for a tenner

cheers

stu

Re: bar ends

they do serve a purpose, they are a finely tuned mass, and their purpose is to reduce vibrations transferred to the handle bars, if your replacing them with aftermarket ones, ideally, they should be the same weight as standard ones

Re: bar ends

Like Adam said they're soul purpose is to reduce the vibrations through the bars. Aftermarket are usually nowhere near the same weight so not as effective at vibe reduction but to be honest I had some cheapy carbon fibre ones in once (I was given them when I lost an OEM bar end ;) ) and the difference wasn't that great.

As far as fit goes you need to be aware that the ones you are on about are for standard handle bars like you find on the naked SV, the SVS having clip-ons is a different attachment and these ones won't fit.

Re: bar ends

I've got stainless steel ones from Busters. About a tenner. Polish up nicely and don't fade or scratch like anodised ones. Very heavy and I don't suffer from vibes.
Edited to reply to Carlos. These are possibly even heavier than OEM ones.

We bought a low mileage yellow one but as the blue ones are FASTEST and we had seat, wheels and other bits to match we swapped bodywork.

As for tolerance from my other half, check out the grainy video. She's worse than I am.

Re: bar ends

I've had heavy bar ends, light bar ends, bar end mirrors, no bar ends, different bars even... None of those ever made the slightest difference to vibrations for me. If you have a vibey bike, they could make a difference but if you keep everything in good order, carbs balanced, engine running sweet, wheels round ;) then there shouldn't be much need for an elastoplast fix like weights.

Re: bar ends

its just manufactures being perfectionist!!

northwind 24-02-07 08:23 PM

Re: bar ends

IMO it's them fitting whatever's in the parts bin :)

adam_castell 24-02-07 08:25 PM

Re: bar ends

ive seen the sort of calculations they use to calculate the dimensions and weights of the end weights lol its a bit sad really, and considering neither you or i can feel the difference, it does seem pointless, but the theory is correct, its just tweaking and optimising

northwind 24-02-07 08:29 PM

Re: bar ends

Yep, but at the time they launched the SV, they only had 3 bar end sizes shared across the entire range :) So they might very well have formula for finding the perfect weight, but they don't have the perfect weight to fit, makes it all even more of a nonsense.

lol, nice use of words

It's just barely in English :)

Re: bar ends

Personally I can't feel the difference. Occasionally I forget to fit my bar ends, have to remove them to get the bike thru the door, and don't notice any more vibes. In fact I don't notice any vibes anyway. I think they have more value as protectors for when you drop the bike.

hahahahaha...absolutly pmls....just showed the missus the vid of the buffing wheel going in the house........im into scooters and a lot of lammy owners keep their scoots in the house as there worth a lot but generally the wags dont like it....

that is awesome....as well as funny as fccuk....i bet you have a good time though....im normally being bollocked for being in the garage...

cheers for that vid....you made my day...

stooster 24-02-07 10:23 PM

Re: bar ends

also on the lammy subject...they are renown for vibes....so much so that your feet vibrate.........thats my current problem....im on the lcgb site tellin them how ****ed off i am with scoots and how much i love my sv and there there tellin me to stick with it......there a great set of chaps on there and a great set here....

suppose ill just have to stick with both...amazing how i can love both types of ride as there so completely different.

I have same S/S ends as pete- they are real heavy and look good.

Re: bar ends

Good idea to make your own bar ends. Something unique.

Tell your missus if you had the bike in the house then she would have the pleasure of your company for longer.

Dunno if you guessed it but it's my better half polishing up the stubby!

^^^^ this is probably what they do best on an sv ^^^^:D

Re: bar ends

On the pointy, what they often seem to do is pull out of the bars slightly, bend back, then hit the tank... Seen that a few times. But yep, by and large they're good protection.

kwak zzr 25-02-07 09:45 AM

Re: bar ends

and they split the end of the clip-on.

Dicky Ticker 25-02-07 10:14 AM

Re: bar ends

When I had my pointy I experimented with different screw lengths until more by luck than judgement I eliminated any vibes. I used a counter balance behind the rubber[spacing washers] but I agree that a properly set-up bike shouldn't need them apart from cosmetic and protection issues

Banus 25-02-07 06:50 PM

Re: bar ends

I agree - the originals look rubish when they're scrathed and weathered - so I took mine off (which was a pain as the screws were virtually seized) , stripped the paint off the with wet and dry and polished them up with solvol and now they look like "Petevtwin650s" above - cost nil !

Re: bar ends

Great idea to polish up the standard ones. Didn't even consider that option.

Got any pics Banus?

Re: bar ends

Sorry no - but they look pretty simmilar to the ones on page 1 of this thread - 4th post down.
I must get around to learning how to upload images onto this site - how tricky can it be ?
