clutch plates and springs

I will soon be needing to replace my clutch plates and springs what do you all think are the best parts

Re: clutch plates and springs

OEM, Barrnet are the next best, they had a bad batch of springs a while ago, i complained and they sent me a free set and they explained it was due to a problem they've had with the plating process

Bad Intentionz 25-02-07 08:33 PM

any one know what the EBC carbon//kevlar plates are like???

They ruin the steel plates, too aggressive

svrash - I hope that's not the ones I bought off you on flea-bay! I haven't fitted the clutch yet!

Re: clutch plates and springs

I've heard of people using 3 stiffer Barnett springs and 3 OEM, but tbh I see no need, the OEM stuff is more than enough to deal with an SV's power output so why make the action heavier?

Yep a full barnett kit is just too heavy and does your hand in, every few months i have have trouble for a day or two with the tendons on my left wrist because of it. I will eventualy change them back, but i need to get another OEM set as my old ones were way under spec.

so would you use Barnett clutch plates and OEM springs

www.hyperplates.co.uk

Have had very very good feedback on them from peeps racing in the states. 70% lighter than stock plates so less mass to move which will help the engine to spin up quicker.

I have a set for my racebike which are going in Friday...if you call them..ask for Reggie...a currently broken:( SV650 racer himself.

I see they are sponsering you for 07

Is their cost of £90ish for just the plates, or for plates and frictions?

Re: clutch plates and springs

Steels only I think, at that price. Well, aluminiumy-steely-things, you know what I mean :) That's kinda cool, nice one SV650Racer...

How hard is it to replace clutch plates i need to put one in badly i have basic tools plus a little and no shop. I hate the dealership here and would like to do it myself if i can if not i will cry and do it but what tools do you need

Re: clutch plates and springs

I didn't realise Reggie did those, similar to the Barnett Cryo plates, only made here so not made with badly converted measurements in to metric.

Fairly easy... But a bit harder on a pointy than a curvy as you need to drain the coolant and take the whole side casing off, instead of just the outer cover. Also means replacing the big paper gasket, which is always stuck to the casing in a particularily annoying way in my experience. No specialist tools needed really, but you'll want one of the manuals. What sort of experience do you have?

i am not a complete idiot but not a complete genius either i have worked on king air for about year so i got some mechanical background with airplane mechanics and i do a ton of tinkering.

Re: clutch plates and springs

Yeah, in that case, you should be fine :) I'm always a bit wary of saying stuff's easy in case someone who has trouble changing the batteries in a clock tries it :)

Re: clutch plates and springs

how many miles do you guys usually get out of a clutch

kcowgergmm 04-04-07 10:28 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

can i get a real quick run down on what you need to do

northwind 04-04-07 10:54 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

This is your friend :) You must master it as you must master your life...

http://www.sv650.org/sv_manuals.htm

But it's more or less drain coolant, remove RHS engine case, remove clutch outer, replace friction plates (your steels should be fine really, but you never know), reassembly is the reverse. Prepare to spend ages cleaning bits of gasket off the casing :) But really, read the manual, all wisdom is contained within.

Re: clutch plates and springs

thanks northwind got one question what is the best way to get those pieces of gasket off i had the same problem when i was working on a hawk gt

northwind 05-04-07 06:25 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

I'm not the person to ask, for me it's a slow and potentially damaging process with a gasket scraper. The metal of the outer case is very soft, too. The first time I did it, I used- very carefully- a stanley knife blade...

But no doubt someone who's any good at it will have a better suggestion

kcowgergmm 05-04-07 06:42 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

do you think the aluminum plates mentioned above would be worth while or would you just replace the friction plates

northwind 05-04-07 07:21 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

Don't know really... I'd probably fit them instead of conventional steels if I needed them, but chances are you don't and tbh for road use there's plenty of other stuff you could spend the money on... I'd want to find some testemonial of road use for 'em too, to see how the claims of long life bear up- race bikes get more abuse but small stresses for 50000 miles can be a lot more destructive than huge stresses for 5000, and there's no way the manufacturers will have done large-scale testing.

kcowgergmm 05-04-07 08:19 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

so that brings up the question has anybody here on the org used the aluminum plates?

northwind 05-04-07 09:03 PM

Re: clutch plates and springs

As of today, SV650Racer has I think ;) I know of a couple of SV Rider guys who've run something very similiar, if not the same ones, and they were happy too... But those were both seriously optimised race bikes.

Buy me a set and I'll testride them :)

I wish i had money so i could just do that maybe when i become wealthy i will buy everybody on the org a set to try

Re: clutch plates and springs

if there's any discolouration on the steels then replace them, it'll only shorten the life of the new frictions your fitting.
