What do you need to get road tax????

Basically my mate has just passed his test:cheers: , and he needs to get his road tax so we can go for a ride :) .

So what do you need to get road tax?

I am pretty sure it is V5, valid MOT certificate and proof of insurance...is that right?

If that is right then will he have to wait for an insurance cover note until he can apply for road tax, assuming he gets insurance now/ this evening?

Just wondering if there is a way we can go for a ride tomorow...or over the weekend....or does he simply just have to wait?

Cheers Mark

Yup. You're right, V5, MOT & Insurance.

Or the tax reminder instead of the V5.

Fortunately he has already rung around so thats some time saved.

He has gone with carole nash in the end. Does anyone know how long they usually take to send cover notes? Also he started the insurance from 15/03/07(tomorrow), so how does that work, as he wont be able to ride until he has road tax and he cant do that without the cover note. So has he "lost" a few days worth of insurance...if so i will have to ring and laugh at him!

Looks like we wont be riding until monday or saturday if were lucky...i might go for a bimble over to his place, just to torture him...muhahahahahaha

The post office won't accept a printed email. I know, I've tried.

It usually takes 1 working day to get the cover note. If he's arranged insurance today, it'll be posted 1st class tomorrow, and should arrive Friday.

Then you can get tax sorted.

If insurance is effective tomorrow, then yes, he has "lost" a day, due to not having the documents & therefore no tax. But what does 1 day cost? Something like £1-£2. 24 hours aint a big deal.

If he has the road tax renewal form for the bike, it should have a reference number on it to allow renewal on line. So if he waits until late tomorrow he may be able to get tax that way. They check for MOT and tax instantly. Worth a try. That way he'll be legal for the weekend if not holding all the documents.

I disagree.

The online system says that it can take up to 5 working days for the tax disc to arrive.

It's an offence to not display a tax disc. Whilst you'd have to be seen not displaying it, it would probably show on a police check that you have tax (safe from ANPR but not traffic wardens ;) )

Also, the online tax systems might not of been updated to say that you have insurance, there could be a couple of days lead time on that. Might not though.

Uh? I've done it before using a printed .pdf doc , which is effectively the same thing they post to you.

Yup, was the same. I got "I can't gurantee that you haven't just printed that at home"... Erm, yes, I did, your point? It came from the insurance company!!!!

Maybe it's a case of some do, some don't.

A few years ago i chanced my arm with a printed email...but they wern't having any of it! Not ideal when you have been queing for the best part of an hour on "pension-day"....mobility scooters everywhere :)

I think i will "advise" him to leave it a day or 2 and wait for the paperwork...if it has not arrived by the weekend then he can look at some of the alternatives you guys have suggested.

As always cheers for your input.

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

I always do mine online. Insurance and MOT are appear online the same day issued so effectively if you have arranged your insurance and got your MOT you can get your tax disc same day with no paperwork - if you have the reminder that is - not so sure about V5 though you can probably do that online as well?

Got my MOT Tuesday PM and sorted tax disc same evening. Just waiting for it to arrive:D

I think the online approach might just be quicker. I renewed mine a couple of days ago on t'internet and the disk was at my door the next day. Suffice to say I was a tad surprised!

Agreed, the ones in my local post office, cant get their heads round the fact that I have a multi bike insurance policy. I'm getting fedup with explaining to them that I have two bikes, and if they bothered to read the insurance certificate properly they'll see both registration numbers printed on it. Every time I explain it they look at me like I'm some kind of idiot.

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

Think I'd do it online and risk the disc not arriving. Can you tax a vehicle in the post office if all you have is the V5 - I thought you had to go to a DVLA office.

my online tax disk only took 2 days, its better than driving up the post office and trying to park the car.

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

In an interesting development he has been sent a rather official looking d/l document. It may well be worth a try to see if it is acceptable.

It does have "certificate of motor insurance" on it, with certificate number/broker reference and all of his/the bike's details.

I will let you know how i get on and seek clarification from the post office staff for future reference :)

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

if its got "certificate of motor insurance" on it it should be ok.

Touching wood here, but I've had my tax disc under the seat for the last 4 years.......................

............No, the seat is not made of clear plastic either.:p

Never been a problem.

I don't display the tax on my ktm, the holder would just get ripped off whenever I went down a muddly lane! Always carry it with me though and never had a problem!

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

I had a right ding dong with post office last time.... vowed I would never step foot in there again, and walked out giving them the finger and using unpleasant words!

They would not accept my insurance documents, even if the broker faxed it to them & spoke to them on the phone to confirm it. Bunch of hitlers, jobs worths, jumped up tossp*ts ...... grrrrrr

Its that bl**dy awful uniform that they have to wear, I would be a grumpy cow as well if I had to wear that all day ;)

rant over

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

Yes I belived it had to be the original copy of the Insurance certificate. They are usualy on watermarked paper., because when you cancel your insurance you have to return that certificate. It is done to stop people taxing cars whilst not having insurance. Doesn't mean they can't cancel it the moment they leave the post office though.

Re: What do you need to get road tax????

Well the verdict is in and my local post office now does appear to accept d/l insurance documents. A little worrying as i could have made it myself with minimal effort. That said i am glad my mate can ride legally now :). Good job too as when i took him down to the garage to get some fuel/check tyre pressure, there were 3 police cars parked outside....must be shift change methinks.

The woman had a quick glance and seemed satisfied and issued the disc. Funny thing though....it was the same woman who refused me last time i tried. I was going to kick up a fuss...but laziness intervened!

Its actually funny you should say that as they do have a few seats and what could be liberally called a patisserie.
