Am I turning into Victor Meldrew?

The Torpoint ferry has had a 'No Smoking' policy for about a year now.

This morning a chap decided that he would pop out for a smoke. I was sat on the bike during the crossing and saw him light up. So I said (slightly muffled as I still had my lid on) "There's no smoking on the ferry mate". "What?" he replied. Slightly louder "There's no smoking on the ferry". To my amazement he nipped the end of his fag and went back inside. Initially I thought 'Yes' - small victory :) . Then I thought - I am becoming the bloke my missus warned me about!! :o :smt064

What do you reckon? Go on - I'm ready for it - hit me in the stomach!!!:smt021 :king:

Keep moaning, its the future.

You will be grumbling about bikes speeding and doing multiple overtakes next....

I think you did very well. You didn't keel-haul him, so I think you showed great reservation. Pat yourself on the back, and give the parrot an extra grape.

Personally, I really can't stand being forced to inhale someone else's smoke. Serious pet hate of mine. If I choose to be there, that's different, but if they smoke near me & I don't have a choice, or it's an enclosed environment & I was there first, it gets right on my erm, chest (u-rating ).

If someone smokes around the kids that's official grounds for WWIII in my book.

However, smoking on a ferry, I'm assuming you mean on the "deck" in the open air? Where's the harm in that? Everyone bends the rules from time to time (eg, speed), why can't a guy have a fag when it does no-one else any harm?

Sorry Victor, but you should of let him be IMO. He's probably writing on some forum now about an a**ehole biker that wouldn't let him have his morning fag & he's now seriously stressed at work because of it!

You have an image of one of those ferries crossing Puget Sound to Seattle or somewhere don't you? It's not quite like that...

Oh, key question by the way - are you a smoker yourself Stingo?

If yes, then fair enough. If you're gasping but abiding by the stupid rule then so should he. If no, then it's Victor time I'm afraid...

Hmmm - outside open air on a moving boat - cant really hurt much if the wind is taking it away. Marginal call - I wouldnt of said anything unless it was flowing into other peeps. I can see why you question your decision to mention it. That pirate image is fading... ;)

Yes. Any further questions?

If it was outside then I think you overstepped the mark. There is a perfectly reasonable and correct arguement for banning smoking in confined spaces and thus forcing others to put up with it,but we have now gone beyond that(as we always seem to) and try to ban things just because we disapprove of them,or even just because we can.Smoking out on the windswept deck of a ferry would be one of those things IMO Mr Meldrew.

Whilst it may be considered overstepping the mark, one has to know which mark is being overstepped exactly.

The 'No smoking' policy is clearly signed on the ferries. Even the people in their little cars and lorries aren't allowed to light up - the man on the bridge often reminds people over the broadcast system.

I suppose I could have adopted a more 'advisory' stance and just pointed out the signs...

For info - I'm the worst...an ex smoker (5 years or so without a tab:thumbsup: )

Anyway, made me grin inside my helmet...he was a matelot!!:D ;)

Fading? Probably because I was on the cover of Vague magazine once...8)

I can see the point of not smoking down below (oo-eerr) where there's a danger to the vessel from a risk of fire etc.

But as mentionned by some above, outside, fresh air, surely not a problem.

Ah well, t'is done now :)

I don't know why, but I had this fleeting image of Stingo pretending to be Judge Dredd in his crash helmet mumbling "I am da LAW" whilst the poor sod scuttles off singing "I fought the law, and the law won" to himself.

I'll just keep taking the drugs shall I? ;)

Fairy 'nuff if he's at the back where no-one else is likely to be, but what if he was sitting outside a restaurant and his smoke was blowing across to a family enjoying the sunshine together...that grates me:smt073

Thanks Mr. Meldrew
