Bad Day Out
Had a huge argument with the wife yesterday so I thought "Why not head out on the bike and clear your head". DOnned the power ranger kit and leapt onto my trusty SV. However due to my mind not being completely on the task in hand and it being my first aggresive road ride this year this happened.

I know it's not quick enough to be a proper streetfighter but I like the look of them and it may save me a few quid. Anyway, anyone who's riding in anything but leathers should think on. I hit the deck at about 65mph approaching a corner and got away with bruising. No big cuts and no broken bones. Also the bike was rideable for 30 miles back to work. Big thanks to the 3 other bikers who came running over to check that I was alright and helped me up with the bike. Luckily the crash bungs were absolutely unmarked after the incident:( |
Re: Bad Day Out
Whilst I fully understand using the bike to "clear the head", but you must remember it's not like a car, you do need your wits about you.
Still glade you came off so lightly, if the bike rode back OK then the forks maybe straight, so you could be in luck, a number of threads address a faired to naked conversion, so give it a search although SV panells are cheap so shouldn't be to much to fix up. Cheers Mark. |
Re: Bad Day Out
Damn, thats is a bad day out.
Still at least you are ok. Gotta say, it is a stark reminder that you cannot afford to ride a bike with anything less than 100% concentration. Hope you and the missus have made up now. |

I did have my wits about me for the majority of the ride but I did screw up big time on that corner. Nothing else to blame apart from me really. I'm aware that I was very lucky. I'll price up SV panels tomorrow. As all but one of the coloured panels are smashed I could go for a full colour change and lose some speed:p |
Re: Bad Day Out
Ouch! Hope that you're in better shape than your fairing - that can always be fixed up :(
Keep us posted on what course of action you take.... |
Re: Bad Day Out
Will do mate. After numerous beers and a bottle of red I'm felling prety good. I'm not too bad anyway. Hurt my right wrist and my right ankle but only tot he point of annoyance not to the point of injury. I did consider quitting biking when I was riding back. After about 10 minutes I decided not to. It's a part of me and what I enjoy.
The wife doesn't see it like that mind! |
Re: Bad Day Out
Have you made up with her tho' :)
My wife is not at all happy with me returning to two wheels - she used to ride pillion in London 15 years ago just for the convenience of getting to work  Lord knows what stick I'll get if anything happens - even worse is that I'm now guilty of getting our 19 year old son interested in biking ;) |

Re: Bad Day Out
Ohhh now this has touched a nerve.
NEVER EVER go out on the bike when you are fuming. It can always so very easily go wrong. My very best friend had an argument with his girlfriend and stormed out and went for a ride on his bike. The next time anyone saw him was at his funeral. He got as far as the end of his road when he lost control and hit lamp post. Please, anyone out there who thinks they will go and have a ride to clear their head. Go for a nice long walk instead. Please. |

Hay Cuffy, I may be behind the times but is REALLY good to see you haven't left us xxxxxxxxx nice one :D ;) |
Re: Bad Day Out
I'm glad you're ok. As people have already said it's not safe to be on the road if your mind's off somewhere else.
Car included. Ages ago, I managed to scrape the right wing of the car coming out of the garage when I was feeling depressed about uni. I realised I wasn't in a fit state to think properly & I'd be a danger on the road to others, so didn't drive. Cuffy, glad you're back :) |
Re: Bad Day Out
insurance route or not? that could well be the end of your sv if you go the insurance way. sorry to hear your news. :(
|
Re: Bad Day Out
Ouch! Glad you're ok though mate.
|
Re: Bad Day Out
It won;t be an insurance job as I'm TPF&T. I wouldn;t claim anyway as I'd rather keep my no claims and fix the bike up myself.
Cheers Husky. I'll take a look locally for bits but there doesn;t seemt o much about here. £300 isn;t too bad but I still need clip ons, switch gear, a rear brake lever, indicators and an exhaust on top of that:o |
Re: Bad Day Out
Heed - you are a lucky, lucky man. My drop was at least 20mph less than that, my SV was a write off, I spent a week in hospital, six weeks on crutches, and two and a half months off work:crutches: :crutches: :crutches:
The row with Mrs came later - when I announced I was getting back on a bike:rolleyes: I'm glad you're not badly hurt:D |
Re: Bad Day Out
Yup - you're lucky to walk away unscathed even if the bike's a bit of a mess. Hope you're back on the road soon (and talking to your wife sooner).

Re: Bad Day Out
Cheers Ed. The wife and I have made up but she's not happy about me getting back on a bike. In know it was my own fault and it's taught me a valuable lesson to respect the bike and speed a bit more in future. I'll be getting a better look at the bike tomorrow then I'll decide what route to go down regarding repair/writing off/streetfightering.

Re: Bad Day Out
Sorry to hear about the off, glad to hear you're physically ok. Hope the bike damage isn't too extensive on further inspection.

Re: Bad Day Out
Oh dear.
Still you said it yourself----A valuable lesson to be had.If you can have a accident like that and walk away the experience gained will stay with you and hopefully it will never happen again. |
