hiya people, just had to share my good news. while at work we were all checking our pay statments and I noticed that I pay £150 a month tax more than everyone else. my tax code is BR (bloody ridiculous) I assumed it was because I was in receipt of tax credits. anyway phoned pay office to be told it stands for basic rate. I then phoned tax office and I have a cheque winging its way to me for 2 years overpayment of tax and when I get P60 in a couple of weeks I have to send that off and get another years tax refunded then get a new tax code. so not only will wages increase by £150 each month approx I will also get thousands in lump sums. woohoo happy happy bunny. not selling bike anymore or kids :p

I always check my tax coding and tax like a hawk, I'm tight that way, don't like them getting a cent more than absolutely needed.

BR being Basic Rate or "emergency tax." It's the tax rate you pay when they haven't sat down, put a finger in the air & said that you should be paying £250/month :D

I wouldn't expect thousands, maybe a couple of hundred, but certainly not thousands.

I would back up what Steve H said, it can quite easily be thousands....i got back nearly 2k a year or so ago.

Erm, I don't usually check these things but after reading this thread.....


.....I've just found out that I've been on the emergency tax code 522L (previouly 503L) for the past 6 years!!!!! Now, does this mean I'm entitled to a rebate and should contact them, or should I stay quiet ;)

This depends on how much tax you've been paying, and how much you earn.

I'm currently on 503L and paying £161.11.

Knowingly paying too little tax counts as tax evasion, and brings VERY serious penalties. So, no comment.

From conversations I had with you down in London, I reckon you'd fall into Basic Rate tax (under £33k pa), which works out at roughly 22% of your gross pay. Work it out if you like. If you're paying more, complain, if you're not, well, the choice is yours ;)

well going by what everyone else at work pays who are on similar wages to me, I have been over paying my tax by £150 per month for 3 years, it better be thousands back

Should be. £150 x 36 = £5400

Sounds like youre on a normal tax code which has been adjusted for some taxable benefits you receive. :p Nice try :p

no. it's overpayment being returned to you, not taxable income

Unfortunately they don't pay you any interest or compensation. If, on the other hand, you were to owe them money, even for a day.....:smt017

Tax is collected based on what your COMPANY provides to the revenue and previous details held. If your circumstances change, this could affect your tax code and leave you paying more than you should. If you dont notify the revenue, then they will presume circumstances havent changed - hardly their fault in those circumstances. Also, tax is what the COMPANY calculates, collects and pays and again HMRC can only go with what is declared to them by your employer.

Either way, overcharging isnt always down to HMRC if thats what you were trying to imply with that :p

Im in half a mind to post this since I dont think it will actually carry much weight with anyone despite it being the way it is. :(

No I'm with you Lynw.... emergency tax code BR for three years, someone in payroll should have checked that. BR is short term till you code is sorted. Have had to operate my own PAYE (small scale) myself, so know it's down to the company that collects it on HMRC's behalf.

Hence I ALWAYS check mine now I'm working for someone else again.

well i suppose if anyone is to blame its me. but when i started this job, i had just separated from my hubby and was in receipt of tax credits, I just assumed the tax code was something to do with that. Only queried yesterday when I found out other girls in the school paid £15, £21 and £32 a month tax compared to my £169 lol hardly surprising I have been skint.

I'm still waiting on my p60, I know I'm owed just over £500, but my work's head office isn't responding to my letters and the phone number is diverted to india call centre now, so phoning up is useless trying to get someone to speak 2 anyone who can help. Spoke to my manager, but she doesn't understand how the tax works and the site is going through a transfer of company ownership etc, so everything is all over the place. what to do?

They dont have to get the P60 to you until the end of this month btw. They are still in time.

What to do? nothing you can do but wait until the end of the month tbh.

It wasn't actually aimed at the taxman but I can see why you could have read it that way. What I meant was that it's not often you hear of over payments of this and that, but you do hear far more stories of being ripped off here and there. :wink:
