Project Phoenix
Ok I am about to embark on a new project … I have taken leave of my senses and taken pity on this wounded animal:- http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=91169 … bearing in mind at a glance it needs a new frame (seen a pic of the crack and my prognosis is its only good for the bin), and as the frame is cracked from a frontal, I can only assume forks, front wheel, yokes, probably discs are gone too … also needs bodywork and a clock bracket … and that’s just the stuff I KNOW I will need  … my brain says NO … my heart however … is, well, stupid!!
Ok ASM-Forever has said he would like to see it live again rather than just be broken for parts … I too want to make it live again. I have assured him when it is complete that I will fit my camera to it and he will see the phoenix bike in track action. If you are interested in seeing this project completed then read on:- Right, so although I have taken leave of my senses, I am tight (I prefer sensible with money, but you can call it tight if you like :D) and I don’t want this project to run into stupid money – i.e. to figures where I could have just bought a ‘good’ one to start with and its not like I don't already have a trackbike (or 3 :D)! Bearing in mind the extent of the damage, it would be all to easy to run over budget. To try and keep it economically viable, I am prepared to swap/trade in parts to ‘realise’ some cash from bits I don’t need … like I could part-x the clocks (24k) for higher mileage clocks +cash, or even clocks that have a broken speedo (the rev counter HAS to work though). Also the tank looks to be ok, so again, trade in any battered tank (i.e I don’t care about dents but it has to be usable). Also if you want any bits that I don’t need, like rear seat, rear side panels, fairing lowers. Then a fair price/swap can be arranged, this will all go back in the pot to try and keep this viable. Also I need to source parts at ‘good’ prices … again I don’t care what they look like but they HAVE to be 100% ‘straight’, so if you have them then get in touch. These are the show stoppers:- - Frame - has to be straight, but I don’t care if it has scrapes or minor dents on it - ‘Front end’ – basically yokes, forks and front wheel. Requirements - Fairing/clocks stay. - Race fairing - Race can (bruised and battered, don't care as long as it is cheap) If people are interested in seeing this project through its stages and gradually see Phoenix come back to life, then I can keep a blog/thread of its progress on here … I’d even be happy to slap some BIG .org stickers on it if the site donates them :) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Ooh interesting...you know ill be following its reincarnation closely.....by the time you are done i might even be back on a bike :)
Dont forget to sell the hugger...people were always pestering me for that! |

I do have the luxury of time to try and source parts cheap (eBay bargains for example are out there if you catch stuff at the right time (i.e. when no one else wants/needs it ;))). But my aim is to have it on track before the end of the year!! 8) I am however not going to pay through the nose for parts to make this happen!! ;) ... winter is a great time to find parts with low demand, so I may be forced to push my completion date to 08 if I don't trip on stuff at the right price in time ... |
Re: Project Phoenix
You just need an SV thats been rear-ended....a lesser man might suggest going covertly to AR07 in your van :)

Just in case she is listening ... I don't mean it little van, you have served me proud ;) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Yep you're nuts. You'll have to buy a 5th SV for a good frame :D

For example, here is a frame AND engine for £99 - no bids ebay Clicky ... Only problem is it is in Helston (near lands End) ;) That's prolly why someone hasn't bid on it for the engine alone ;) ... anyway, somone buys this for teh motor ... they then have a frame they want shot of ... Blue picks up a good frame for £30-50 ;) To be honest for £99 it might be ergonomically viable for me to drive there and flog the engine to re-coupe the fuel costs ... but that is just too much hassle when I can just wait for something similar but closer ;) |

Re: Project Phoenix
Blue, may have some euro clocks with working rev counter and speedo, reads in KM/H, low kms to (18-19k I think). Either sale or swap + cash = hugger?

I just realised that my dad lives about 2/3 of the way to that frame/lump - suppose I could use it as an excuse to visit the old boy ... it'd break up me journey and I could grab a free feed if nothing else!! :D Quote:
Happy with a trade in of the KMH clocks (I'll leave the speedo disconnected anyway, so it matters none to me! ;)) and I don't need the hugger. What are you willing to offer for the hugger and clocks (including the part-x'd euro clocks). Lets find out what the hugger is worth new, presuming it is in good order, you can have it for half that and you can have the clocks upgrade for £15, (I'll check these ones work first ;)). |
Re: Project Phoenix
Nope, got UK clocks now, so willing to trade the Euro clocks + cash for the hugger, or just sell you the clocks as still not sure that I want the extra unsprung weight of a hugger!

Decide if you want the hugger and we will talk again ;) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Not super keen on the hugger, so you're best of selling that to someone prepared to pay for it.
So clocks are on offer, what track days are you off to in Aug in the midlands/north (cadwell, the rock, mallory, silverstone, donny etc), could give you them there for a cheap price and helps me decide on a track day! . |

Re: Project Phoenix
There's another frame on Ebay for £50.
The one with the engine and other bits sounds better though. |

Anyhoo ... progress with Phoenix ... I picked it up today ... bit of a nightmare as the front wheel was so badly fecked the bike couldn't be pushed along as it rubbed on BOT - yes BOTH of the fork lowers where it was so badly buckled ... which meant it was hard to get in the van ... some attempts at taking spacers out etc were to no avail .. so we basically man-handled it in!! :D The strip down has commenced ... well to be honest is already complete, I did it in the van on the way home!!! ... well it was better/ and more productive than sitting in Friday home time madness traffic!! :D So now the hunt for parts really begins ... So who was it that wanted the hugger?? also does anyone want the lowers??? I was hoping moneys raised by selling them would be enough for a set of forks (or a bargain pair of forks AND yokes 8))... Got some pics ... but can't attach pics as a feature of the forum any more it seems  |
Re: Project Phoenix
i have a frame in high wycombe if thats any good for you. as for price make me an offer. Its from a 99 bike and is in good condition, it has no dents scrapes scratches etc. It currently has the swingarm and rear shock still attached but i was going to take them out tonight or tommorow depending on when i finish work this afternoon. Also got a whole bunch of other stuff which i really need to take photos off and put on here.
The only thing i need to do is to get the bottom yoke off because ive promised that to someone but i still have the top yoke. you have a pm with my phone number so give me a call if you want to discuss anything. cheers mate |

Re: Project Phoenix
can the frame be fixed? Is it just the broken weld?
Matt |
Re: Project Phoenix
Wow....you can really see how bent those forks are now :)
Matt....from what i saw it was the weld that was damaged, but i dont think blue is going to risk it. |
Re: Project Phoenix

Its probably best financially and from peace of mind point of view to throw it in the bin and start again ;) |
Re: Project Phoenix
How much would you be after for the rear left hand plastic Blue?
|
Re: Project Phoenix
Glad your not selling the frame on ebay with V5

The RHS does have some scuffing BTW, but it structurally intact :) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Interesting if foolish project, but its entertaining and I wish you the best of luck!

Re: Project Phoenix
I have a Fuel race can you can have on the cheap. It's a bolt-on so would need the convertor plate, but £15 from bandit mania will get you the plate.
PM me & we shall discuss more if you're interested. |
Re: Project Phoenix
Had a day off today ... got loads of stuff done (work really gets in the way doesn't it!! :D) anyway, one of this 'stuff' is that I managed to patch up the original fairing ... good job I like jigsaws!! :D
Tape all the pieces back together (yes, there were a lot of cracks/breaks ;) http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...v650s/fix1.jpg http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...v650s/fix2.jpg And fiberglass from the inside ... http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...v650s/fix3.jpg Job done, one track fairing!! :) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Are you going to glass over or fill the light holes with something?
|
Re: Project Phoenix

For thems that never realised the clear lenses are actually plastic NOT glass so this is easy to do!! Inside:- http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...v650s/fix4.jpg External result:- http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...v650s/fix5.jpg 8) |
Re: Project Phoenix
Ingenious solution.
Also being plastic means there is less point in taping them up for track days. |
Re: Project Phoenix
Not to rain on your parade Blue, but the lights worked fine...although i guess the scuff could be the damage you are talking about :)
|
Re: Project Phoenix
i will be intrested to see this up & running too
good luck |

I love having tatty looking track bikes ... it means when you turn out to be 'slow', no one takes the piddle .. you show up to a trackday on an fully tricked out R1 in full Fiat Yamaha colours and Rossi rep leathers etc ... you had better be quick!! :D |
Re: Project Phoenix
So fundamentally, you've bought an engine and a box full of shrapnel? Well done :)
Curious... Why glass the fairing not plastic weld? Going to put an SV front on it? I ask, because GSXR bits are usually about the same price if not less, not to mention easier to find on ebay. I sold my stock SV bits for more than the GSXR bits cost me... SV bits are always in demand, for, well, obvious reasons, but lots of SRADs are off to the knackers now. If you do a shopping list, I've probably got some bits that are too cheap to be worth selling but that I don't need... |
