OMG - Ants in the house

So I'd just been out for an afternoon ride, (to check out machine mart in Southampton - dissappointing), and I come indoors, needing a wee quite urgently as is the norm after a ride out.
Going up the stairs I notice a flying ant on the carpet, so I pick it up and dispatch it, quickly closing the bathroom window, the only one open.
As I pass the spare room, I'm gobsmacked. I'm staring open mouthed for 20 seconds. The (wooden) floor is a carpet of ants. Big ones, little ones. The window is covered in flying ants, buzzing against the sunlight.

This is indoors, upstairs. :smt103

Jumping into action, out comes the Dyson 4 and sucks them all up. Then the flying ones at the window. Another wave comes... they are coming up behind the skirting board! I get control again, and go off in search of insect spray, and generously blast the 'entrance'.

After an hour there is no trace of ants at all, apart from the odd flying one returning from a buzz round the cupboard or wherever. I've looked in all other rooms, the lofts etc, nothing. I've been round the perimeter of the house, especially looking at the wall where the bedroom is, nothing.

Just had a search on the web, I see other people have had similar experiences :smt103

I've had some in strange places in my house this week. I put it down to a rising water table, but then again, they do sometimes come out of the woodwork (I assume) to search for pastures new.

It maybe there was a nest in the brickwork or under the floorboards - they just hatched and were buzzing off to start their fresh new little anty lives...

... in your hoover. ;)

I occasionally get the odd one in my 'glorified greenhouse with three walls' (OK, so it's loosely termed a 'conservatory), but as I'm a rabid defender of all that is right, good and possessing four legs or less - any nest I track down gets to suffer boiley boiley ant death.

Had loads of flying ants yesterday.

Probably will be gone in a couple of days - once they've all flown the nest.

Quite annoying sitting in hte backgarden getting dive bombed by them, still give the cat something to play with.

I noticed an ant wandering round my living room on friday.
As there was only one I din't really mind and let him be.
I saw him on saturday (deffo the same ant) so I named him "Steve".

However he seems to be taking liberties as this morning he seemed to have invited about 10 of his mates round.

Re: OMG - Ants in the house

I used to get ants in a flat I lived in a while back and rather than going on the 'DESTROY DESTROY!!' line of thought I decided to try an experiment.

Ants communicate by leaving trails of smells. The scouts on their travels leave 'ok this way's kewl' smells, so the other ants follow.

I then set about harrassing any scouts that came into the flat, they'd make an about face under fire (I essentially mortar bombed very close to the little guy with my finger, sending him into a panic). It would eventually get back out the way it came in.

After a couple of these attacks, no more ants came in due to the 'HOLY CRAP!! DON'T GO NEAR THERE!!' scents the harried scouts left behind.

Good one! I've got a bottle of Carlsberg at the end of my garden to encourage them to head off in that direction.
