Main dealer servicing & warranty
I'm in a dilema as to whether to keep my 2005 bike in the dealer network for servicing or go to a local non-authorised shop. The reason for the change is the bike shop has a superb reputation for being bike wizards and the local Suzuki dealers are poor and expensive. I don't want to do it myself other than oil/filter changes.
So the questions are how does this effect warranty (has anyone any experience), will it effect the residual of the bike when I come to sell or px it? Thanks |
Re: Main dealer servicing & warranty
i was always told that as long as the local non suzuki shop used suzuki OE parts the warranty should be ok, ring suzuki GB and ask them to make sure.

As long as OE parts are used, and it's serviced to the book, then it's in no danger of losing it's warranty legally. Your Suzuki dealer may try to wriggle out of it, but if it's done to the book, then it's not a problem. |

Further point to this.
I got a letter through the door the other day, from The AA. Now, by my understanding, my bike was covered by warranty for 2 years, and this warranty included breakdown recovery. Now The AA are wanting me to spend money on the 2nd year's recovery cover. Can anyone confirm/deny if the 2nd years breakdown recovery is included?? |
Re: Main dealer servicing & warranty
According to their website, it's only a 12 month breakdown cover:

As you havent enquired yet to see if Suzuki will look at it under warranty i can always raise the question to them. You cant got to trading standards before asking if it will be done under warranty:smt103 They will come down and have a look. Only problem is that they may notice that the oil level is well below the minimum mark. Can find out though if you want!. |

Thanks Gnome & catwrim.
I guess I'll have to rely on the other 3 breakdown cover policies I have for the bike then. ;) |

For example, my bank charge me £10/month for the account with them that I have. For that, I get worldwide family travel insurance, and vehicle breakdown cover for me, regardless of what vehicle I'm in. I also get a couple of other benefits from the bank, like cheap electricity. Should the bike breakdown, I can call customer services at my bank, tell them about it, and they'll send someone (Greenflag) out for me. The car has breakdown cover on it (paid for the whole 12months before I got the bank account) which applies to me & not just the car too. My bike insurance also has breakdown covered (offered for free, so why not). Then The AA want to charge me £30 for the years worth of breakdown cover.... No. |

but if you run your bike out of Oil and it seizes its tough! I had both my cam chains rattling 2 months before i could get my new bike (XJR1300) and i had to shell out to get them replaced because i had done my own servicing and not paid a Suzuki Dealership to do it! and the bike was under 2 years old. Re: Main dealer servicing & warranty
I saw a really weird thing yesterday, some bloke with a Divvy 600 was complaining about a wrecked clutch. When the clutch came out the centre was bone dry and there was a lot of rust on anything steel in there too.
Now this is a wet clutch, with oil splashing around it all the time...so how the hell did anything remotely ferrous rust? |

Re: Main dealer servicing & warranty
I've had a bike come back from a service without any oil in it.
It took me a while to realise and when I took it back they blamed me. Said that it had been used by the engine and I should have been checking it. Now at the time I was a mechanical numpty. However in the first 600 miles the bike hadn't used all it's oil so I don't think it suddenly decided started using it in the next 200 miles. Fortunately it was the CG and so damage was limited and it's done 20k fine since. |

Interestingly the dealer has said that due to low mileage of my bike doing the 7500 service which would normally be due at 2 years is unecessary and so oil, filters and brake fluid change with a check over will suffice. Will still cost me £150 though which seems quite steep. |

I'd be going somewhere else for such a basic check over. |

Is that from a main dealer or a local independent shop. The £150 I've been quoted is main dealer price. The bikes done under 2000 miles so can't need too much doing to it! |
