Flat spot?

Around 4500rpm if you hold it there it's not smooth at all, sort of hunts for the right revs to stay at, also when you put the power on it pulls hard up to 4500, then hesitates, then pulls hard again (not for long though, damn 33hp) up to about 7000.
Is this what is termed a flat spot? seems lean to me, its not massively bad, but still irritating.
Its an '02 naked with 33bhp sliders and a fuel SS oval can with no baffle.

Considering shimming the needles or maybe jets (doesn't seem to need jets to me though..)

Ideas?

Chris

Re: Flat spot?

If you have the baffle the easy thing to do is put it back in! If it is lean then this will probably improve it. You may like the sound but it is probably detrimental to the performance without rejetting, and it's not worth rejetting whilst it's restricted to 33bhp.

When I come to remove the 33hp kit will this throw the jetting out again?

Possibly, infact I'd be surprised if it didn't, and you might also consider a performance filter at that time (ie when you remove your 33bhp kit). I just dont think it is worth your time and trouble as the performance gain will probably be absolutely minimal for the amount of effort involved. I'm sure your bike will still sound much better than with the standard can even with the baffle in, and also be nicer to ride. Try the baffle back in - it is so much easier than messing about with jetting.

Yeah good point, will give it a go and see how it feels.

Re: Flat spot?

Mine with 33 takes a lonnnng time to get past the ton (only on a private road though...)
Standard should get up to those speeds much quicker.

stop it young man. You keep up wid me on a 33. why do you fellas get so obsessed with going quicker, faster. tut tut. go to a corner and tell yourself orf!!!! and yes its a 33 so will run out of puff at a certain rev speed whatever, buut mine won't go nowhere at full power anyway, and you'll still be able to toast me....tehe

I'm not after more speed, if I wanted that then I'd build misen a nitrous kit :p

It's just smoothing out the midrange I'm considering.

Re: Flat spot?

whats your top speed at 33bhp?

yorkie_chris 17-07-07 09:18 PM

Re: Flat spot?

Not topped it out yet, seen about 105, but I had my waterproofs on and the wind drag was enough that I was struggling to hang on lol. Bearing in mind mine is naked.

Re: Flat spot?

ive had mine at 120mph does mine sound likes its a full power bike?

yorkie_chris 17-07-07 09:27 PM

Re: Flat spot?

I've heard that the 33bhp doesnt do much to the top speed, just takes longer to get there.
Your best bet is to let someone else have a go and tell you how it feels, or just check the carbs.

you probably would knowing you:rolleyes: .
im indoors says come up when you get back up norf and he'll have a natter with you and help you out...he charges reasonable rates!!!:jocolor: funny sod.
he says its probably the restrictor kit. or mucky carbs

yorkie_chris 17-07-07 09:38 PM

Re: Flat spot?

Much as I'd love to weld the restrictor kit to an anvil and drop it in the sea... :p

I think its just a lean spot and not an actual problem, has done it since I put the can on.

Re: Flat spot?

well i'll stand and watch, the day you do that...anyway kettles on for when your back.. you can have a laugh when the raptor stops working again

A laugh?

Hoh! That thing gives me headaches and it aint even my bike! lol

dizzyblonde 17-07-07 09:47 PM

Re: Flat spot?

:p that'll be the exhaust then. nearly blew me and the dogs onto the roof when it started today

Re: Flat spot?

Has he considered using those as some form of anti-chav artillery?

I can see it now ... one blip of the throttle and an extra spark in the pipes enough to send any lowered, over-stereo'd corsa bouncing down the road...

Twist the trottle fully in 1st or 2nd, if it goes beyond 7k and if you really need to hang on it's stock.

Re: Flat spot?

oh it goes right to the red line

yorkie_chris 18-07-07 03:50 PM

Re: Flat spot?

Mine will still redline at 33hp, its whether it has any grunt above 7k thatll tell you.

Or you could just have a look...

Re: Flat spot?

Bump.

I've tried the baffle in the can, and it makes the flat spot smaller, maybe 200rpm instead of 500, at the cost of sounding absolutely narf.

However, I'm stuck with this 33hp sh1te for 2 years, so seems worth getting it jetted right as I use this bike every day.

Going to start with a small shim under the needles and see if that gets rid of it without fouling plugs, unless anyone has a better idea..

Re: Flat spot?

I just posted in that other thread :) But, I didn't realise it's restricted, all bets are off really  So, I'd play with the jets and needles anyway, just to see what happens.

yorkie_chris 20-07-07 05:24 PM

Re: Flat spot?

Lol I just replied to it...

I really don't like that damn law!

Will try the needles first and let you know what happens.
