Handle Bar Change out

Hello Britts From A Yank.

I have a 2006 SV650S. I turly enjoy the bike other than the clip on handle bars. I use the Bike mostly to and from work, so comfort is the issue. I recently purchased a factory SV650 not S tripple tree clamp with handle bar trisers. A pair of super bike handle bars and replaced the original upper tripple tree clamp. To instal the new handle bars using all of the original brake hoses, throttle cable, and factory wires for starter and blinkers. Step 1 place covering around the tank and fairing, to avoid scratches. Step 2 remove everything from the clip ons.Step 3 remove tripple tree clamp (the Head bolt is a 32 mm) the ignition is attatched using security screws. pick up security screw driver bits at local hard ware store. Step 4 remove clip ons. Step 5 now the fun stuff, you will need to remove all wiring from the left side of the bikes frame that is held by a wire clamp. this is easy to find and remove you can see the wires exiting a hole in the frame and there is the clip. this will allow for a few inches for movement of the handle bars. in that clamp is also the throttle wires. Step 5 push the throttle wires back into the frame hole ( lift up the gas tank) then run the wires out of the from hole on the right, this will allow for several inches of wire. Step 6 remove the front brake like frome the front of the frame, it has a frame clamp attatched to it. You will need to clip the black plastic wire ties that hold the brake line to the speedo wire. Step 7 re instal the ignition to the new tripple tree clamp and put tripple tree clamp on the forks. intall all the clamp on stuff, clutch, brake, throttle, turn sigs and starter clamp housings Step 8 Put handle bars on handle bar risers and you are done,, almost you will notice that the brake fluid reservor is just dangling because the factory mount was bolted to a hole in the clip on handle bar,,,easy fix. take the top bolt out of the blake lever clamp mount. that bolt is 20mm. buy a 35mm to 40mm bolt. put the new bolt through the mounting hole at the base of the brake fluid reservor then into the brake lever clamp. It looks neat and clean and low. there is just one more thing you will need to buy just a little bit longer brake line hose that runs from the reservor to the brake handle,,, for the Britts about 15 mm to 20mm longer or 1 to 2 inches......lol.... No offense If I could move there I would.....
My Cost......
Ebay-Suzuki Factory tripple tree clamp with Risers. $25.00 U.S. plus shipping.
Ebay- Super bike handle bars $19.00 plus shipping
Ebay- Universal bar ends $8.95 plus shipping
Auto Parts- 40 mm bolt for brake clamp $1.00 set of three.
Auto Parts- Brake hose for reservor $1.00
Time 2 hours if that.
If you were to buy after market tripple tree riser kit, $250 plus+++++

Re: Handle Bar Change out

I have been looking at getting S type handle bars...wish I knew you were looking, we could have traded...

If, by chance, you are looking for the less aggressive rear sets I'm also looking at getting some more aggressive ones. I believe there is a slight difference in them, but they are interchangable if you are interested.

OK then:

1" = 25.4mm, if you're doing any estimating. Or you might experience some problems  .

and

If it has to be anything, then Brits, not Britts. Please!

Hey, Paul. Where abouts in Florida do you live? I used to live down in south Jacksonville a while back. Now I'm up in Clemson, South Carolina where we have some mountains and I can't decide which I like more. Definitely more fun for biking up here. I'm only about 10 minutes from some nice curvy mountain roads!

Can't say much about the weather though. Still in the 90s every day and humid as all get out...

I am by no means a red neck lol I am from Ohio but lived most of my life in South FLorida, Key West, Key Largo, Ft. Lauderdale..lived in Texas for a bit and Kodiak Alaska. I had two bikes in Alaska a street bike for the summer and a enduro for the winters...

Re: Handle Bar Change out

Looks like you get around. Sounds like it would be fun for a bit. I did like Key West when I went down there though. It seems like it would get boring quick from a riding standpoint.

PaulSV650S,

Thanks for the awesome post :)
I almost sold my sv650s because of the riding position.

After reading your awesome post I changed my mind .
I am trying to get all the parts etc to changes the handle bar.

Will the following handle bar work ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Super...spagenameZWDVW

If possible could you please post some more pics of the parts and your bike after the changes are done.

Do I need to get the whole triple clamp like the following pic

or just the upper triple clamp?

PaulSV650S 28-08-07 05:49 PM

Re: Handle Bar Change out

All you will need is the upper clamps and handle bar clamps. The handle bars are the same ones I bought off of Ebay, same type and company. I will put some pics on tonight but if you need to see some now look at my other thread New Prototype Exhaust about five pics. let me know if you need anything at all.

Re: Handle Bar Change out

the ridding position is awsome but still sporty. I use my bike to and from work and it made a huge improvement in comfort.

thrill 28-08-07 08:31 PM

Lowering the seat

I am also thinking of lowering the seat using gel pad inside it like Tom Monroe
did in the following link

http://www.itrocks.com/motorcycles/gel_seat.htm

Do you think the above will make it better or worse ?

Hello Yank from a Yank ;)

I must say after seeing the pics that I'm quite impressed :thumright:

My first thoughts would be the relationship from the bars to the fairing being too far but looks great!

I personally don't mind the standard clips but thought I'd mention it looks fine and probably very helpful advice. There have been plenty of people mention the riding positions.

Thanks alot. I love the bike. I was torn between the naked and the S model so now I have the best of both. I truly hope this will help everyone who wants to change out the bars. thanks again for the positive input...

Re: Handle Bar Change out

in true street fighter style it would be possible to drill out the top yoke and put handle bar risers inplace direct its something i have done to a gs500 training bike that had drop down bars on it, it now has sit up bars and no handling probelms at all and cheaper and easier to do

PaulSV650S,

Thanks for the pictures. I am impressed too .
Only getting the parts as cheap as you did is getting harder.

Of course I can get all new parts and spend more

the above for sale on Ebay. $39.99 U.S.

Re: Handle Bar Change out

Something I forgot to add. I had to touch up the paint of the tripple tree and clamps. I used Dupli-Color High performance wheel coating/ paint. because the paint is a bit thicker and more durable than regular paint and is chemical proof. Oh and I used the alum wheel color that has bits of shiny stuff in it. just prep prime and paint .....

Re: Handle Bar Change out

PaulSV650S,

I lost the eBay bid for the triple clamp.
I went to the nearest dealer and saw that the kawi 650R handle bar
felt really good as I am a newbie.

Since you are more knowledgeable about bikes I was wondering will the 650R triple clamp and handlebar fit my 05 svs or not ?

PaulSV650S 07-09-07 02:29 AM

Re: Handle Bar Change out

I don't think they will fit. I will send you the name and email of a guy who just bought my clip ons for his 06 SV and wants to find a home for the standard tripple tree.

I`m seriously debating this , I have a K3 and need to do some further research to see if there are any issues , damned K3`s are a law unto themselves on inter-changeability :D

Have been looking to do same conversion, the K3-K7 top yoke numbers match for naked model and the S model. Other people seem to have changed them over without problems. :)

Re: Handle Bar Change out

How about the 1000 naked going onto a 650s then ? , theres a yoke on ebay with risers from a 1000 and I am wondering if that would fit also .
