The purpose of a forum?
Re: Top Speed
Taken from earlier thread. Boring I know but what is the top end speed you have had out of your SV flat out with no pillion?? Just that, so people can discuss things. Yes and if they run on and evolve into a different subject..... so what's the harm? I'm now getting bored with this forum even though I'm new. I mean I can here the same sort of crapola at work. |
Re: The purpose of a forum?
I think you're being a dab hasty.
There are a number of subjects that simply have been done to death, of which 'what is your top speed' is possibly the most irrelevant. It's irrelevant because speedos aren't that accurate, how could anyone possibly claim 140mph from a near standard bike otherwise, and it always guarantees ludicrous willy waving. |

I can see both sides of the argument here. I haven't been a member that long, but even I think 'Oh no, not this subject again' sometimes, so how those who have been here for donkeys years feel I can only imagine. That said, there are new people joining all the time, and to them everything is a fresh subject to be discussed. |
Re: The purpose of a forum?
696 mph ....... but not on an SV..
I was pillion following a pilot... yes big willy waving upto about 45000 ft, him in his Torando ... wot ever...:puker: Scared the $hit out of me. but the guys in the Hawks have more fun so I'm told. |

Re: The purpose of a forum?
I think these subjects will come up time and time again, but as threads have titles you can miss the out if you want, knee down, top speed, fuel range, pointy or curvy, etc, but people still like to chat about them, so let them. The only reason to stop a thread is if it steps outside the boundaries of the forum, whatever these are...

when you've been here more than 5 minute you'll see certain post topics rotate and come up every month or two, some people don't even know about the search let alone use it so pointing it out is now wrong according to you? threads of any great length are for IB and not the information areas as people can't find relevent info to answer problem they my have. IB is for chatting and those with time to kill, feel free to chat away in there, relevent on topic posts are fine start diviating to far and it makes no sense of the post title, who desides what to far is, that'd be us moderators. Re: The purpose of a forum?
by al means chat, use regionals or IB, we try to keep the two top area's for information and problem solving and fairly clear of waffle.

Re: The purpose of a forum?
I can't believe this subject has come up tonight after talking to a mate earlier about the whole "try a search" responses, spooky stuff.
My opinion is just please for the love of god don't ask "what tyre is best for my SV?" again:smt067 |

"What, nobody knows anything about [insert topic], you guys suck, I'm out of here." The people who have seen the subject time after time, are the people who can probably answer the slight variation that perhaps you have asked. Most forums follow a rule that you should search before you ask questions, by NOT following this convention, its the poster of the duplicate question that is being rude. I have been on forums where you would have got a "Do a search" reply, then the thread locked. So, in general, find a thread on the topic you have a question on, then, if you have any further questions, add to THAT thread, people will see that its re-surfaced and look at it. Aslo when you do add to the old thread, try and let people see that you have read it, refer to things in the thread that you are not sure on, or doubt the accuracy of. |

Re: The purpose of a forum?
You've also got to remember that, although the forum is free to us end users, someone has to pay for the bandwidth at some point. Therefore 7 threads of 10 or more pages on top speed, knee down, fastest colour, best oil, best tyres and blah de blah do have to be cut down on at some point.
The definitive answer to all these questions are as follows: Top speed: slightly slower than you think. Best oil: Stuff from the garage. Vegetable oil is no good. Knee down: Regularly when I check my tyre pressure, change the oil or anything else that involves kneeling down. Best tyres: Try the round black ones, I find they work very well. (Thanks Sid Squid) Fastest colour: Any colour you like*. Let's be honest, we all know that really, right? *as long as it's black |

Re: The purpose of a forum?
Plenty of smilies is a good idea then people shouldn't misunderstand you and have a go! Of course its easy enough to go the long winded route so you explain everything is so much bleedin' detail that its impossible for anyone to misunderstand you.....but I guarantee someone will!! ;)
I often find on forums that if I make a joke the person I'm replying to often thinks the joke is aimed at them, so its always a good idea to try and word things carefully e.g., sir hehehehe! :) ;) :) ;) :) (see) By the way (switches to 'on topic' mode) I should be taking my mate to his flying lesson this weekend, and hoping its not windy, so I get to play on a real runway, well, not the runway but the taxi ways, well, not the taxi ways exactly but the outfield access roads which are very flat and very smooth! :) Shall report back if 140 is seen. If I run alongside him as he takes off it'll confirm it cos I reckon his plane does 140 max! :-k |

Re: The purpose of a forum?
Late to the party with the serious answer... Here's how it'd be in the real world:
9am in the office. Someone says "What about that (insert news item here)". Office discussed news item for half an hour. You arrive at 10.30, just after they've finished, and say "What about that news item then?". Does everyone have the exact same conversation again? Nope, chances are you get a couple of bored answers and then it drifts on. You don't get your conversation, everyone else gets bored or annoyed... On a forum, you can search and if that conversation happened recently, instead of trying to start over from scratch you can carry on from where it left off, without endless repetition. If you want a chat about top speed, searching for "top speed" then posting your part on the end of the last thread just works better for everyone. Nobody's saying "Don't talk about it" Well, OK, probably Rictus is ;) |
