Reporting a website.....

.......anybody on here know where I would go to put a complaint in about a website? It's not here so don't worry lol.

My fiancee is on a website and is getting sexually harassed by another member and the admin/owner of the site is doing nothing about it.

I just wondered if there is anywhere to go for reporting such and incident?

Anyone know?

TIA.

Nev.

Complain here. Post details of the website/guy and we'll all harass him :)

Start with the Police. This sort of thing needs nipping in the bud. I'm sure the website will take it's responsibilities more serious once it gets a request from the Police to reveal personal details of said member.

Re: Reporting a website.....

I did the harassing bit myself and got banned lol.

Problem is it's an American site so I don't really know how to approach it.

I don't really think the Police Service of Northern Ireland would be interested lol.

There has to be somewhere you can go to report it at least?

I'd be terrified of any threat coming from NI ;)

pm one of the mods

Re: Reporting a website.....

I;'d go with PM'ing the mods, providing evidence to them aswell?

In the mean time, let us all know the site, and the bully shall feel the brunt of the .org

They will be assimilated, etc, etc.

Re: Reporting a website.....

Lol no threat coming from NI now. We've all been de-commisioned.

I did pm the mod. I actually pm'd the admin/owner of the site - he was the one that banned me lol. He said I was trying to bully him because of my "agressive attitude".

This is why I want to report it to some sort of body and give him a huge headache.

Still - like said - Police.

Regardless of USA, you are in NI - they are your responsibility to protect.

Re: Reporting a website.....

The police should be able to do something, they might be abl to contact a police force local to the person who runs the website? I don't know.

ISP, I would have thought, would make more sense than the police. Juristiction on internet stuff is really complicated where it crosses borders, and who knows where the site's hosted (frinstance, obviously this is a UK site but the server's in the US I think)

It's an American site. Still waiting on the admin/owner to get up so I can start round 3 with him.

It's a site that's very personal to her and I am dam sure she's not leaving just cause of one a$$hole but he is making it particularily difficult now. Hopefully I'll have him banned this afternoon after a bit more intelligence gathering!

Lol i wish the other site had some of these smilies. I know what I would be sending him!

No No and No, please dont go down this route, I dont want the org getting in a spat with another site, we had that once before and it took alot of my time to get sorted out.

I can't picture a site that is very personal to her that she is not admin or mod of? If I was getting harassed on here, I would just leave, and enjoy my real life, they are all only websites. That said, I hope you do manage to get it sorted out. Or else post a load of illegal pr0n pics on the forum and tip off the police. :D

Really? This was before my time.

Tell me the story of the great war, oh wise Fizzwheel. Who were our enemy, and are we all at peace now?

Re: Reporting a website.....

The harrasment, in what form is that coming? It might be easier all round to be proactive and take steps to at least block it. Ie. if it's coming from from email (ie. the harasser has your other half's email address) configure your email client to auto delete anything from him, if it's PMs on the board, does the board software have any kind of ignore/mute functionality?

To be brutal, I doubt there's a whole lot the police either can do, or will see as a high priority to do, unless specific threats are mentioned (they might take interest if you casually mention you think he might be the type to carry heavy rucksacks onto tube trains, but that's probably very naughty). There is no real central policing of the internet, and to be fair, I kind of hope that never happens, there's co-operation over paedophiles, domain name contests and international tax evasion and the like but nothing really central to resolve "minor" problems (I use the word "minor" in no way to diminish the effects your other half is surely suffering, merely in the context when put alongside kiddie-fiddlers).

Re: Reporting a website.....

Hmm, how annoying.

Just an idea, but depending on the kind of site/server software it is, and the kind of trouble you're having, you can block some members from sending PMs to you.

Again though, not much help if theyre posting public threads or something.

Try digging around your/her user preferences and seeing if its possible?

Of course, theres nothing to stop them reregistering with a new username...but that the same case even if you succeed in banning them

If it were me, I'd:

1) call your local police and demand a reference number for an incident of harrassment. They may (probably) not give you a crime number, but they'll give you a reference number of sorts, they have to.

2) Write an email to the site owner, and same paper version of a polite letter explaining what you want done, and why. Mention in it that its their responsibility as an admin to moderate the content of the site, and if they fail to do it you'll take it to a governing authority, referencing the police number you already have. Be nice, it usually works.

3) Contact the ISP if/when/if not you get any response from the admins /registrars and forward (politely) all of the information/feedback you have to date, along with why they're in breach of their contract and should be contacted and duly dealt with.

Have you tried doing a whois search to find the registrant of the domain? Even though the site is? US based -the registrar may be anywhere.

The other back-down option of course is to delete your/her account and reregister a new one, making no "profile details" obviously similar. Delete the old account.

Good luck.

No I'm not digging it up again. Its put to bed and it can stay that way.

Bignev, if it were me, I'd write a firm, assertive but polite email to the site owner / admin and put your point across that way. I wouldnt get into a slanging match or a spat with the admin, if you want them to resolve your problem then you want to keep them on side.

Give them a chance to do something about it and make it clear to them that the onus is on them to resolve the situation. Running off the police or ISP before they've had a reasonable amount of time to sort things isnt the way I'd personally do it. When I get complaints I might take a few hours or a day or two to research the issue and situation and make sure I was well aware of all the facts before I took action.

Then if I got nowhere then I'd go directly to the ISP or the hosting company. Alternatively as suggested just get your other to re-register with a different name and keep the details out of the profile etc etc. I know it sounds like backing down, but sometimes its just better off to do so. Sounds like the site admin isnt going to help you, perhaps they know the other person and it can be difficult to be impartial or neutral.

There's always one isn't there ffs.

Story is he's been pm'ing her asking for naked pictures of her, videos of her that sort of thing and trying to get her doing the old talking filth thing. She's been ignoring it blocking him and such like then it became very public on the website through him posting blogs about her.

Let's just say if he lived round the corner from me he would be eating through a straw if at all for some of the things he's saying.

2 types of members on the site paying members who don't seem to get touched for anything (he is one) and non paying members like my fiancee.

It has since transpired that this is not the first time he has done this and for some strange reason has the backing of one of the staff members. Probably because she is the best friend of his wife! Yes I said his wife who is also a member on the site and sitting watching all this happen while having a good old laugh to herself. The staff member even said my mrs deserved it for "having your chest hanging out in your profile picture" trust me - it wasn't.

I'm not letting this go. I am going to give them so much hell they won't know what's hit them. I put a blog up about him 4 days ago and it was removed by the same staff member within 1 hour. He put another disgusting blog on last night at 6.00 and it's still there with the staff members being online ignoring it.

I'm trying the softly softly approach with the admin/owner once more then I might accidentally post the website details and username somewhere for any interested parties to (ab)use.

He puts blogs up? Like fictional stories? Surely she can just ignore it. He'll be bored in no time. Besides, it's you who gets to do what you want to her! Let him fantasise all he likes!

At the end of the day your wife should either choose to continue to use the site and potentially be harassed(or whatever), or simply stop using the site. Jeez she could even register as a new user and keep a low profile.

As it seems the admin/mods dont care, then there is very little you can do.

After all, i have to tolerate Hovis' constant sexual advances on this forum! :)

Whoo hoo he's been banned!

It seems good does ocassionally win over evil.

I suppose he could come back on but I somehow don't think he will get away with it again.

Thanks for the comments guys. It's a hard one to solve I suppose but it isn't pretty to sit back and see your loved one go through it when it's not wanted.

Welcome to the wild internet.

Afraid the answer is live with it.

Leave the site and block email coming from the site and get on with your/her life
