Dude if you want the bike, can afford it, then buy it Why not? I have my eye on a bike that I want at the moment, though the insurance was high for comp. Have to say if I can get the bike, then I will have it!

To be honest any second hand bike can a be a money pit, you've just got to be aware that even if nothing goes wrong with it the running costs will be much higher than the SV. As for the widow maker reputation don't believe all you hear, indeed the earlier models were prone to bucking 'a little' when pushed hard but the major problems were sorted after '98. You can do just as much damage to your health pushing the SV too hard so just keep your right hand under control and you'll be fine, personally I find my TLR is easier to ride than my old SV but thats just down to my riding style I think. Frame probs were more prolific on the R as opposed to the S but do check really well as problems don't get much harder/expensive than a cracked frame or headstock.

Personally i love mine to bits. best bike ive ever had (apart from blowing it up). The whole widow maker rep is a bit over the top its just that the rear shock isnt that great and if your going to get one get one which has got an ohlins rear shock. about 50% of them do. I spent a long time looking for mine and ended up with a really nice one.
If i was you i would seriously reconsider if its going to cost 1600 to insure cause thats just silly. Also dont listen to anyone who hasnt riden one as they dont know what they are talking about when it comes to the 'bad handling' Ive riden 4 tls's and 3 tlr's and only 1 of them was horrible and i think that was because it had crash damage he wasnt telling me about. The others were nice but im a short **** so i ended up getting one which was lowered slightly. |

The thing to remember with the tls is that its power is all midrange, its not really that fast at the top end so if your used to screaming your bike it takes time to adjust to the difference in the power band. The drop off at high revs is a lot more noticable than the sv. as i said before great bike, love it to bits, so much so that im actually rebuilding it with a new engine rather than just parting it out which is what i would normally do if something this terminal happened. |
