Dude if you want the bike, can afford it, then buy it Why not? I have my eye on a bike that I want at the moment, though the insurance was high for comp. Have to say if I can get the bike, then I will have it!

huni,my best mate bought one a year after passing his test-he'd had a zzr 600 up to that point...we all said the same, he'd die etc...
over 2 years later hes still here, still has the tl and loves it
so if you can afford t, do it.:D

Ed hit the nail on the head, apart from the insurance, the bike could be a real money pit. The frame cracking issues worry me more than the widow making rep. If you buy a TLS you really need to know all about them. Some research into the recalls and you need to know if they were done way back when.
If the bike had full service history for the age and mileage it's not so bad, but without that it's a total toss of the dice.

I'd rather get a cat D sv1000 and modify it than buy an old TLS with no history. Why? Parts availability, the older the bike the more 2nd hand parts cost.

I actually rode a TLS, a supposedly sorted one, handling isn't great, sort of like the 1985 GSXR. Fast and loose is how they felt, could be a Suzuki thing. I know about the steering damper issue and all that does is mask the issue and mess up the low speed steering.

To be honest any second hand bike can a be a money pit, you've just got to be aware that even if nothing goes wrong with it the running costs will be much higher than the SV. As for the widow maker reputation don't believe all you hear, indeed the earlier models were prone to bucking 'a little' when pushed hard but the major problems were sorted after '98. You can do just as much damage to your health pushing the SV too hard so just keep your right hand under control and you'll be fine, personally I find my TLR is easier to ride than my old SV but thats just down to my riding style I think. Frame probs were more prolific on the R as opposed to the S but do check really well as problems don't get much harder/expensive than a cracked frame or headstock.

Sorry, got to agree there, old bike and loads of miles with high insurance, where the fun in a load of outgoing dosh, youl be wantin to paint it blue next..!!

You asked 'should i'... if you have to ask then you don't really want it. Look yourself in the mirror :takeabow: and ask, will i dust the cops on this if i need too or will i have to stop and reason with them :smt027:smt070....:)

Personally i love mine to bits. best bike ive ever had (apart from blowing it up). The whole widow maker rep is a bit over the top its just that the rear shock isnt that great and if your going to get one get one which has got an ohlins rear shock. about 50% of them do. I spent a long time looking for mine and ended up with a really nice one.

If i was you i would seriously reconsider if its going to cost 1600 to insure cause thats just silly. Also dont listen to anyone who hasnt riden one as they dont know what they are talking about when it comes to the 'bad handling' Ive riden 4 tls's and 3 tlr's and only 1 of them was horrible and i think that was because it had crash damage he wasnt telling me about. The others were nice but im a short **** so i ended up getting one which was lowered slightly.

hadnt changed the oil in a while and it was low, then i decided to rev it way too hard on a very cold night when it wasnt warmed up properly. Entirely my own fault for poor maintinace and being lazy.

Basicly i was following some guy and trying to get him to pull into the inside lane so i could over take as he was just sitting in the outside lane with no one in the slow lane. I decided that reving my engine would be a good way to get him to notice me and move in given its so loud but i just over reved it. The thing to remember with the tls is that its power is all midrange, its not really that fast at the top end so if your used to screaming your bike it takes time to adjust to the difference in the power band. The drop off at high revs is a lot more noticable than the sv.

as i said before great bike, love it to bits, so much so that im actually rebuilding it with a new engine rather than just parting it out which is what i would normally do if something this terminal happened.
