I have used the netgear range for some years now. My company uses them for about 50 home based staff as they support decent VPN authentication and encryption, Read X509 certificates and AES256 for the geeks.

Biggest issue seems to be that it takes quite a while for bugs to be acknowledge/fixed.

Also in this age of higher speed broadband you need to check the throughput. Some versions only support about 11Mb throughput.

Agreed - I have used Netgears for ages - but I do prefer Linksys or SMC (Linksys are part of Cisco, who know a thing or two about decent routers) and SMC was my first wifi router from about 4-5 years ago and is still going steadily today - would totally recommend

As said before if it has a bug it takes forever for a firmware update, which can mean having to reboot the router daily in some cases - v. annoying

I've got a netgear wireless router - WGR614 - it was fine until recently, but now we have:

- Main computer connected via cable
- My work laptop connected via wireless
- Two sons with comuters in their rooms connected by wireless
- One Xbox and one PS3 connected via wireless

Starting to have problems, keep having to unplug/replug it in. I've hear good things about linksys - will one of theirs be better?

I've always been a D-link fan. I brought one 6 years ago after using them for work a few years prior - it still works fine today after giving it to my brother earlier in the year (fancied an upgrade). Never had issues with them and easy peasy to work out. Also purchased another in August to use at my in-laws. Quality items - low maintenance.

Re: what router?

Most of the modern routers have now been tried and tested - just go for a decent make and remember to keep in mind ADSL 2 ( and + aswell) for upgrades in the not too distant future
