What mods for a trackday SV?

Hey all, Just wondering what mods you would make if you were going to turn your SV into a trackday bike?

I know some people on here have already got an SV as a trackday bike, what mods have you guys done? Which ones have you found to be worth it & which ones do you wish you saved yor time & money & not bothered with?

Thanks in advance

Gaz

I bought my SV650 K3 naked with the intention of making it into a dedicated trackbike. Once I'd added up how much it would cost to upgrade the suspension and fit a GSXR1000 K5 fairing to make it worthwhile, I bought a CBR600 instead and kept the SV as my commuter bike.

Cheers Lozzo,

Well I am contemplating getting a new SV next year to use as a road bike & just do a few cosmetic mods to that & keep my K1 as a trackday bike, as I’ve already put an Ohlins shock, fork springs & emulators, & braided hoses front & rear on it, so already ½ way there.
I’ve got a few other things I’d like to do to curvy but it’s knowing where to stop, lol.

Looking at:

Race fairings
Galfer wavey discs (or just OE discs & decent pads)
Full exhaust system (possibly M4)
GPR damper
Rearsets
Decent track tyres

But its knowing what is going to benefit me & worth spending cash on.

There's no rule that a track day bike has to fully faired. If you're not racing, I don't see the point. Fit crash bungs, nose cone and a belly pan catch tank. Personal taste if ya want to ignore me.

I just don't feel right perched on a naked or semi-naked bike on track.

Gazman, it seems you've done all the sensible suspension mods, so the rest is pretty much down to how much more money you'd like to spend. Personally I'd just lob a race fairing on after selling the original on ebay and take it on track once to see what more it might need, then start buying them. That's what has happened with my CBR and it's proved to be quite a useful way of doing it.

Cheers for the replies guys,

Good point Razor , I didnt realise you could just get the top part of the fairing? I was thinking more along the lines of loosing weight, with the lack of lights, electrics, pillion seat etc

Yeah that does seem like a sensible way of doing it Lozzo, just thought i'd try & do as much over the winter so I dont get bored lol. Didn't just want to chuck all these bits & bobs on & look like one of those nobbers with all the gear & no idea.

Don't bother with the wavey discs IMO, any improvement is marginal at best. Full system doesn't make an awful lot of sense either to be honest, it's damage prone and expensive for the gains. When you're racing, aye, it makes more sense but for a trackday bike, I wouldn't say so. A slipon will give you nearly as much weight loss, and a set of cams would give you a similiar power boost for a fraction of the cost. Personally, I'd be inclined not to tune it at all, for this job, but that's a matter of taste.

rearsets are essential imo
crash bungs advisable
decent tyres - ie supercorsa's
tyre warmers
trailer

Ohlins shock, fork springs & emulators, & braided hoses front & rear on it, so already ½ way there. - yep they are the most crucial things to do 8)

Race fairings - always nice, but not essential, so if we are looking at budget and only spending money where it matters - get 2nd hand repaired ones or just use road stuff!! :)
Galfer wavey discs (or just OE discs & decent pads) - I just run stock discs and Performance Friction 95 compound pads - its the pads that matter - I don't really struggle on brakes, so I'd say wavys - although undoubtedly better, would be a bit of a luxury - money is better spent elsewhere, jsut get 95 compound PF pads ( not chap at £80 a front set, but worth every penny!! 8))
Full exhaust system (possibly M4) - for a trackday bike this is unnecessary and means you would need to get the bike dynoed (more expense) - just fit a race can - with removable baffle as some of the quieter days you might need a baffle in!!
GPR damper - unnecessary on an SV
Rearsets - Essential
Decent track tyres - Essential - but 2nd hand race cast-offs are more than adequate for trackdays and cost pittance ... 2nd hand Supercorsa Pro all the way :)

Things you will also want
14t front sprocket (swap back for really fast tracks like snett)
Crash-bungs
Spare leavers
Spare bars
Spare pegs/rearsets.
warmers
WOW (wets)

I had these in the AP Racing calipers on my old Gixer Thou, they are absolutely phenomenal pads, I never had any braking issues at all with them fitted. They were much much better than EBC's offerings.
