depends, the south face is in china and the north face is in Nepal I believe, wheres k2 ? and why,s it called that ?

2 refers to second highest point K prob cos its real name is to hard to pronounce

K is for Karakoram. The peaks of the Karakoram were surveyed by Thomas Montgomerie in the 1850s and numbered as K1, K2 etc.

Some say that they were numbered in order of height (K2 being erroneously supposed to be lower than Masherbrum): some say that the order was pretty well random. K1 was probably Masherbrum: it wouldn't have been Everest, which is not in the Karakoram.

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth. It is located in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan range, on the border[2] between the Gilgit-Baltistan region of the Pakistan administered Northern Areas and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.[1]

Chinese authorities officially refer to K2 as Qogir; simplified Chinese: 乔戈里峰; traditional Chinese: 喬戈里峰; pinyin: Qiáogēlǐ Fēng. This name is derived from Chogori, "a synthetic name made up by Western explorers early in the 20th century from two Balti words, chhogo ('big') and ri ('mountain')."[3] Other names include Mount Godwin-Austen,[4][5] Lamba Pahar ("Tall Mountain" in Urdu), Dapsang, Kechu or Ketu (both derived from "K2"[3][6]).

Yeah the karakoram range is in Pakistan and K2 was called k2 cos it was the second from the left when they surveyed it apparently

I heard about that too. It never shocks me any more just how un-educated the vast majority are. Saddens me, yes, but shocks me, no.

Just to be pedantic - Everest is the highest mountain in the world, but Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world :D

I believe K2 is the most "rated" amongst clibers. High attitude and difficult terrain make it hard to climb.
