Banking Scam
There's a new scam going round just in time for Christmas, and like as not related to certain missing discs with peoples details on, I've only heard this relates to HSBC customers, but no doubt it could happen with any bank:
You get called up by someone claiming to be from the bank to inform you "we are currently having problems with our system and could you please confirm some details" or words to that effect. Whereby they can then get personal details to get access to your account. Don't do it, just tell them you are busy, ask which department they are from and that you will phone back soon as you can (to which they will respond that you can't phone back as they are not on a system that allows you to ring back - didn't realise you could get one way phones like that) Normally I don't believe these type of e-mails, but our friend phoned up to let us know that she had been told about it when lo and behold, but her mobile rang, and she got some chap saying the above to her. I assume they will call mobiles as chances are you are out doing something and your mind is less likely to be on the phone call. As the banks always say "they will never call you and ask you for details, they only ask you to confirm details when you call them" Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up. Ste |

Fair Do's ste, cheers for the ehads-up. My partner banks with HSBC, and as I take calls on her behalf normally (since she is deaf) then I can be aware of this, as can she :)
I often get scam emails from Barclays I dont have a barcleys account, do they expect me to bleeive them? I did send off some details to some poor third cousin of some war-torn countrys uncle of their king, who kindley asked for some money to be placed into a safe account...gotta help these people, havn't you? Cheers for the heads up on the scam svste, don't bank with them but will only be a matter of time before they impersonate the other banks. |

It's quite good this one, the idea's not new- it's not hard to get the card number and a phone number, that sort of information gets leaked from online retailers quite often, but most of the time the scams themselves are very crude, this one's much better in that the call environs are more convincing- apparently they even have a call centre chatter background noise, to make it sound like you're being called by a large call centre. It still depends on people giving out information they shouldn't but in this case it's fairly understandable that people get fooled, it's a very professional scam. Affecting at least HSBC, RBOS groub, MBNA and HBOS, that's about half the visa cards in the country.
Nothing at all to do with the lost CDs of course. |

The current scam is affecting Visa and Mastercard holders, the caller has a lot more detail than normal, ie address, phone number (obviously) card number, expiry date and in some cases the issue date, the bit they need, and are after, is the 3 digit pin code on the back of the card so under no circumstances tell them that

First Direct sometimes call me and ask for my password and other details. I wish that they wouldn't do this. I usually challenge them to confirm that they're actually calling from First Direct and they give me their name and ask me to call them back.

Yep and there is an e-mail going around too, from abbey national and their partners cahoot. Same again don't log in through this e-mail (only applys to on-line bankers)
