Side mounted Number plated - is it legal?
I think I already know the answer but thought I'd pick all your brains,
Been thinking about fitting a custom undertray - the type without a provision for a number plate bracket, so was thinking I might do what the Americasn do and mount it on the side, What are the legalities to mounted a number plate on the swingarm? FYI, http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_630.htm  |

Re: Side mounted Number plated - is it legal?
Angle, size, lettering, and position they point is all highly detailed by the DVLA.....you will definately get bummed for a £30 fine eveytime you go out, potentially worse.
Edit:- Classic bikes/Car are exempt, before anyone mentions front mud guard mounted classics |

Yes, it has to be centre and a certain height.

Re: Side mounted Number plated - is it legal?
I'm sure I've seen a few 'new' harleys with side mounted plates over here, but then again becuase of the history a lot of them get aways with no baffles and black.silver plates!!
I did read somewhere that the number plate had to be centrally positioned - anyone got any links before I call the local MOT station? ;) |
Re: Side mounted Number plated - is it legal?
The new Harley Nightster has an offset plate in the states but there was a delay in importing it here as they had to design a new central hanger for EU regs.
It's a construction and use law, not necessarily an MOT one. You could still pass MOT and be 'illegal'. |
