Broard Band - one for the techies
 

We do very little "smurfing" the web at home and mainly use the computer for e-mail etc so only have a dial up connection :oops::oops::oops::oops:

However, we're finding that a move to broard band is needed due to software upgrade needs on line and pictures etc arriving more regulary by e-mail.

So, what's the best/cheapest package to go for?

I dunno if you have Sky already, but they do what I think is a pretty good package.

We pay £15 a month, (think its a little more now).

For that you get:

2mb Broadband, with a 2Gb download limit a month (wireless router also included)
Sky TV installed with 2 channel packs.
Free evening and weekend calls on your phone.

We use the internet at home loads (browsing, mail, streaming TV, work, bit of gaming), and have not had an email from them saying we have exceeded our limit. Unlike other providers, Sky don't charge you extra for going over - unless it is a regular thing.

2 Gigabit limit

Jeez I would be offline in a day.......

Mind you my Neighbour managed to get 458Gb down in a month - now thats unlimited broadband :)

Yup.

I know it's not a lot interms of data, but for what Tris is asking for it would be more than adequate. We only went onto it at home to try and save money - and to be honest, it's great.

The problem is with Youtube, and the BBC's iPlayer, not to mention game, music and movie download sites, 2Gb is really nothing in the scheme of things.

Once I get set up in the next 3 months or so, it I will have about 20Mbps over 2 connections, both on unlimired tarrifs, it does help that I get free up-to-8Mbps from work which will be used for browsing and gaming, and whatever I get from Be (hopefully about 12Mbps) will be for running my Web/Mail/DNS server from, as well as remote admin of my network:)

What people dont realise is that you can have 8-16mb connection, BUT, your area lines may only be able to cope with much less than that.

My dads area only has a 1.5mb line to his house, yet he has an 8mb connection. He'll only ever get at best 1.5mb.

We've got a 3.5mb line in our area. We're with Sky also, but sure we only pay £10-£15pm for unlimited downloads. I've seen 3.4mb on the line, but its usually around 3mb.

Didn't have any issues with sky thus far, been a fair few months and happy with the service. Unlike tiscali, and Eclipse, who were both pants.

ADSL broadband speed is dependant on distance from the exchange. Cable/DSL broadband speed is not.

Add into the equation that those advertised speeds are "theoretical maximums" and you will probably be quite surprised by the actual speed you get ... however as you moving from a dial-up connection you'll be astounded by just how QUICK it is :D so don't panic just yet ;-)

Some providers offer unlimited, and some cap their service.
Some charge for anything over the cap and some don't.
Most (of the ones that I've seen) that offer "unlimited" downloads are subject to a "fair use" policy - meaning if you leave your PC on constantly downloading GB's of movies/music/etc. then you will probably be asked to refrain from such demanding online activity. If you are warned again, then you could have your service removed/reduced.

2GB limit doesn't amount to much these days ... that's equivalent to about 4 movies per month alone - not including music (mp3's) or just general surfin' but depends on what you intend using it for really ;-)
