illegal exhausts

I recently purchased a 2000 sv650s. It's got the standard exhaust on at present but as part of the deal I also got a scorpion end can. This has the markings "not for road use" etched on.

I'm tempted to put it on and take the risk because I know it will sound fantastic. I just wondered whether anybody has an illegal exhaust and has ever attracted any unwanted attention? What did the police do? Any fines etc?

Thanks

depends on where you are, the police here have better things to do, but in some places i'd expect they could enforce the rules very strictly

Never had a problem with race cans around here, nor do any of my mates. Slightly smaller than legal plates are ok too, but not stupid ones you can't read.

This thread's a sticky in the Bike Talk section of the forum, while it's got overly long, the initial posts are from Police who ride bikes:

Just polish the "not for road use" off it, then put it on and enjoy.

..or you can get replacement E marked bands off ebay for a couple of quid. I fitted one of these to my mates (rather loud) ART can a couple of years back. The following summer we were pulled up near Bala for spot checks and not only did he get away with it but the coppers used his bike as an example of what's correct, to an R! rider who was getting done for the 'not for road use' markings:rolleyes:. My mate had to ride off with his foot over the outlet when they let us go.:D

Sticking an E or BS marked band over the top of 'Not for Road Use' is illegal and is basically perverting the course of justice. You are not committing an offence if you simply remove those words from the can or stick something else over them. My MOT man tells me he'd fail a bike for having an aftermarket E or BS sticker/plate, but is happy to pass an unmarked can that is a bit too loud - he doesn't like people trying to take the p!ss out of him.

What?

So sticking something over it is fine, but sticking something over it is perverting the course of justice?

Make your mind up :-P

My opinion, don't stick anything over anything, just replace the band entirely.
