burning smell
Hi , have noticed for last couple of weeks a burning smell coming from bike when I stop bike after a run, have checked all fluid levels and are fine , bike is running fine .
Could it be the Rectifier/regulator ? as I hear its a common fault on the sv Bike has done 26k Cheers Steve |

Assuming its not the tyres after "spirited" riding;),it could be the reg/rec.The smell is possibly coming from the battery which may be cooking if there is too much charge.Does the battery get hot?Needs sorting before it starts blowing other circuits,or the battery explodes.:eek:

Bike is still under 2 years old , would a duff Rectifier/regulator be covered under the warranty ?
The bike is filthy at the moment could be the smell of road salt / mud ? Would a duff rectifier have any other symptoms apart from frying the battery ? When revs engine headlight becomes brighter is this a good sign? do curvies & pointy use the same rectifier/regulators as appears that most problems occur with the curvies from reading through threads? You haven't sprayed it with acf50 have you? I thought my bike was on fire because of that burning off!

ACF has quite a distinctive smell, and is usually accompanied with loads of white smoke.
Can anyone describe what battery-boiling smells like? |

before a battery will go pop , it normally starts to deform on the sides.

found this on the net , will give it a go (how do I get to the battery on a pointy?)
Voltage Regulator. All the current from the charge coils would over charge the battery if we let it, so we need a voltage regulator to keep the battery charged at 12 volts. Your ohmmeter should have a DC volt scale. Set it at 20 volts and connect the positive and negative leads to the right battery terminals. Make sure the battery is fully charged, so we get a correct reading. Start the bike and rev it up. The volts should go up to 13.8-14.5 volts and then stay there. Much more, and it will over charge the battery. Much less, and the battery will never charge up |
