Rear Brake Caliper

Just went to start this job (renew pads and change hose)

It started to snow, and the bike is outside.

The pad pin plug seems to be seized in place............. arrrrrg!

Liberal application of penetrating fluid last night and today, it's not budging.

I don't want to keep at it or the slot will end up chewed by the screwdriver.

Any hints peeps?

Cheers

I'm assuming you are talking about the retaining pins.

If so, you could try and split the calliper in half and see if you can get the pins to free that way.

The rear caliper on a K3 doesnt split, its a single sided job with one piston.

I had exactly the same problem, the way I got them out was (with the caliper on a bench rather than on teh bike) get yourself a good set of mole grips. Loosen the pads at the opposite end to the pin if you can so that the pads are basically hanging on by the pin alone.

Set your mole grips nice and tight onto the side of the pin and wiggle for all its worth. They should ease and you'll be able to remove them. If the mole grips slide then they are not tight enough. Dont worry about marking the pins as they can be cleaned up with a file fairly easily. Worst case you can replace them pretty cheaply.

I'm assuming that you were able to remove the small circular screw cap that covers the pin?

When they go back in dont forget to copper grease them so you dont have the same trouble next time.

Attention to detail is everything.

Which one does split Ape? Is it the curvy models?

There's only one pin in the rear caliper on my pointy. I assume you're removed the blanking plug to get to the head of the pin, or is it that that's seized?

Re: Rear Brake Caliper

re-reading it sounds like its the cover pad thats seized, not just the pin. Bugger.

I think the best bet is to find a nice big sharp screwdriver that fits the slot properly. If its too small then it will chew the slot as you say.

Yeah need to get a much bigger driver.

Or I might just leave it and only change the line.

Not sure.

(It is the cover plug, not the pin itself)

Thanks for the replies folks.

Cheers

Far better to just service it and leave the line alone IMO.
